These are possibly the toughest stadium records in the
entire world.

Now take a look at Friday's entry lists for men and women:
http://www.weltklasse.ch/eng/index.htm

The gist of the contest is to predict any new stadium records.

Send the following by e-mail to me, no later than 8AM PACIFIC time
on Friday morning:
EVENT - ATHLETE NAME - NEW RECORD TIME OR DISTANCE

The athlete name must be associated with a specific event, and the
new mark prediction must be associated with a specific event & athlete name.
In other words, each prediction must have three parts.

You may enter more than one predicted new stadium record, but
take a look at the scoring first:

1. Marks must be wind-legal to count as records.
2. Event prediction is correct, but name & mark are wrong: 5 points
3. Event & name OR mark are correct: 10 points
4. Event, name AND mark are all correct (a trifecta!): 20 points

Non-winners who legally break the stadium record will get the same points as above,
IF the winner was wind-aided. If the winner was LEGAL for record purposes,
then the predicted non-winner will get the same points as above, but
decremented by 1 point.

So you just predict somebody in every event, right?
Wrong, kemo-sabey.

Scoring Rule #5:
Where the predicted event does NOT result in a new stadium record,
you score minus (-) 3.

So be judicious in your entries.
If you predict a stadium record in an event that's not even being
contested Friday, it's an automatic -3, so pay attention to the
Zurich web site.

If your predicted athlete sets a stadium record in a DIFFERENT event
than you predicted, you don't get any points, but you won't get penalized
either, as long as SOMEBODY sets a stadium record in the event you predicted.

You say you need a prize to make it worth your time?
Okay- here's the prize:
-
A vintage T&FN 1978 High School Track Annual.
With Renaldo Nehemiah pictured on the cover as HS Athlete of 1977.
Includes complete 1977 list, results of the big HS meets in '77,
all-time HS lists, the '77 T&FN All-American list, etc.
56 pages for the guys, 6 pages for the gals (it was 1978 remember).
This one is in EXCELLENT condition folks- not even any dogeared pages.
-

Okay, have fun, get your entries e-mailed to me, and I'm the
final judge. Any zombie who e-mails a field event prediction in
imperial will get it converted to metric using the T&FN tables, rounded
DOWN if there's not a direct conversion. So just send it in metric to
avoid any conversion loss.

Oh yes, in case of a needed tie-breaker, it'll be whoever comes closest to
predicting the exact new stadium record time or distance, based on least number
of Hungarian table points that you "missed" by. This tie-breaker will be
used to break exact total scoring ties, even if any predicted athlete names were wrong.

I'll try to post a compendium of the entries just before the
meet starts (but after the entries close at 8am)

Any CORRECT entries that just state 'no new stadium records this Friday'
will get the book if you're the ONLY one to correctly predict it-

t-and-f: Mountain Climbing, Buffalo style

2002-08-14 Thread Ed Grant

Netters:

GVot word of a recent workout participated in by most, not all, of
the Colorado U. team which will be defending their NCAA title this fall.
(Steve Slattery was safely back home on vacation in NJ at the time)

Mount Elbert is the highest pead in Colotado, second only to
California's Mt. Whitney in the lower 48. It is just short of 14,500 feet.

The way I heard it, the Buffanloes establshed "camp" at the 10,500
foot mark and then took off for the top, ame 5.5 miles away, including the
4,000-foot climb. Jorge Torres and Dathan Ritzenheim reached it in
approximately 72 minutes, then took 55 minutes for the return, Never one to
ask hsi runners to do something he wouldn't do himself, coach Mark Wetmore
also made the journey, no time available.

It is reminiscent to me, on a far grander scale, of a workout that
was regularly engaged in at Bernards HS. There is a ridge there along a
brook that is virtually straight up. I never saw the actual workouts, but
once covered a marathon run which at one point ran along the other side of
the brook. Even without this climb, the course was so tough that, with some
fair runners in the field, the winner barely beat 3:00. Much of it, I
imagine was traversed regularly by the Bernards team in their road workouts.

Ed Grant

PS: I can't recall who won that marathon, except that it was someone
from princeton U. I seem to remember that among his close followers was the
estimable Hugh (Chip) Sweeny.

Krummenacker has his work cut out for him at 800.
Everybody's there except The Borz, who's apparently
injured.
K's chances might have been slightly better at 1500,
but he probably feels more comfortable racing at the
800 distance.

I notice that no North American men are entered at any
distance longer than 800.

Deal signs on as Oregon coach

1996 Olympic hammer throw silver medalist Lance Deal has joined the
University of Oregon track & field program as a volunteer assistant coach
for the 2002-2003 season. He will coach athletes in the hammer, discus and
shot put.

A four-time Olympian, Deal holds the U.S. hammer throw record of 82.52
meters/270 feet, 9 inches and was ranked #1 in the world in that event in
1996. The owner of 12 U.S. Indoor 35-lb. weight throw titles, Deal retired
following the 2000 season. He returned to compete in two events earlier this
year before winning his ninth U.S. Outdoor hammer title in June.

“I’m really excited about the position,” Deal said. “I remember about 1 ½
years after I moved here (Eugene, Oregon), I told Stewart (Togher, then UO
throws coach), ‘I want to do what you do.’ It’s a little intimidating to
follow in his footsteps, but it should be something that’s fun and
enjoyable, and I’ve always enjoyed working with new throwers.”

Carter coaches while training

2002 US Outdoor 400-meters hurdles champion James Carter will be training,
coaching, and taking classes at Hampton University during the upcoming
school year.

Maurice Pierce, who is Carter’s personal coach and the new Head Women’s
Track & Field coach at Hampton, reported that he has added Carter to his
coaching staff as a volunteer assistant. Carter will take classes to
complete his undergraduate degree during the morning, train with Pierce
midday, and then help coach in the afternoon.

Carter is scheduled to compete at the next Golden League meet, the
Weltklasse in Zurich, Switzerland, on Friday.

Metcalf to head UW track program

Former University of Washington All-American Greg Metcalf has been named
head coach of his alma mater’s track & field and cross country programs.
Metcalf replaces long-time UW head coach Orin Richburg, who left the
University in June to pursue other interests.

A native of Ephrata, Wash., Metcalf was the 1987 Washington Class A state
cross country champion, and he captured the state title in the 1,600 meters
in 1988. He was an All-American steeplechaser for UW before graduating in
1993 with a degree in geography.

As an assistant coach at Washington for the past five seasons, Metcalf
directed the school’s women’s cross country team to five consecutive NCAA
Championships appearances, including an all-time best ninth place finish in
1998.

Wedding bells in the track world

USATF Director of Communications Jill M. Geer and Paul J. Souza, head men's
and women's track coach at Wheaton (Mass.) College, were married August 10
in Hyannis, Mass.

USATF's chair of men's high jump development and Penn State's indoor record
holder in the high jump, Souza has coached the Wheaton women's team to the
last four NCAA Division III indoor track championships and the last two
outdoor crowns. Geer doesn't even own any of her high school individual
records anymore, but she was once a Wisconsin Class B high school state
champion in cross country. She competed in track and cross country at the
University of Arkansas and was an award-winning sports journalist before
coming to USATF in March of 2000.
