t-and-f: Alice Cooper--4:30 miler

2002-10-19 Thread Martin J. Dixon
Very funny piece. He obviously took care of himself a little better than the
Hoons, Staleys and Cobains of the world.
Regards,
Martin

"Cooper: When Wayne's World came out [in 1992], I was coaching 11- and
12-year-old kids, and we had a practice the Monday after the movie opened. The
kids were just standing there stunned. Finally one little kid comes up to me and
says, "Coach Cooper, how did you get in Wayne's World?" I said, "Well, I got
this little band." "

Yeah, you must mean Vinnie from Detroit? 4:32. Oh, he must be 54 now.
Changed his name. Alice Cooper never ran 4:32. It was Vinnie.

Netters:

A couple of things about the armory track post on the eastern HS
meet today at van Cortlandt

The "Red Bank" listed in the sums is Red Bank Catholic, not Red Bank
Regional, which is why the Trotters do not appear/

If someone is on this list who is connected with thebsite, can
anything be done about the print-out problems---you get the index at the
bottom of the page instead of the actual results.

In the October 14 Sports Ilustrated, rock n roll legend Alice Cooper is
identified in a Q + A as having been a 4:32 miler in high school. Boy, Frank
Shorter was right when he said EVERYONE back in the day was a 4:30 miler!
Cooper also sez he can still go 6:10 for a mile, which puts him just about
in the company of President Bush. Is that how it is now--everyone over 50
(who used to go 4:30) is now a 6:00 miler?
I'd love to see a celebrity mile between Cooper and Bush, maybe at this
year's Penn Relays? Shades of Keino vs. Liquori?

t-and-f: Ritz and NCAA

2002-10-19 Thread Ed Grant
Netters:

I had been told a couple of weeks ago,m in confidence, that Ritz
might run the NCAA if Mark feels he is ready for the race.

It is unusual for an athlete to give up a season of eligibility for
a single race, but this is a special situation: If he can make the top 15,
Colorado had an excellent chance to win the title; he would basically be in
the position Steve Slattery was last year when, after running a long summer
season 9to the World University Games), he was not ready for a maximum
effort, but gave the Bufflaoes just what they needed to win. This year,
Steve is in prime shape and, barring mishaps, should be in the top 25 (or
even 20) himself.

I suppose there will be some speculation that this move is an
indication that Ritz will follow the Webb route after finishing his
sophomore year, but that would probably be reading too much into it at this
point. After the Torres boys finish, Colorado will probably not be a
contender for another year or two, while the Buffaloes would have been
favored this year had Ritz not been sidelined.

A great article on Emilie Mondor, complete with picture, featured on the
front sport's page of today's Vancouver Sun.

We could use this type of pubicity more often.
