Re: t-and-f: [Fwd: trivia] answer
Come on, Randy, it's a trivia question, not a national team appointment :). lighten up. - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] And I posit that a World Record Holder refers to the best performance across all age spectrums. Radcliffe is a world record holder (marathon world best at least). Welch is not, any more than somebody who has the best 200m time out of lane 2 on a Tuesday afternoon. Age group records are simply age group records, they are not world records. It is impossible to have two female marathon world record holders simultaneously, unless they have posted the exact same time. t-and-f: Crisis in Oregon
I forward this on the behalf of Dave Frank, Stanford's former national-class steeplechaser, who now coaches HS in Portland. A very sad thing has happened here in Portland. The Portland Interscholastic League has said that spring sports at their 10 schools will NOT be contested this spring due to a lack of funds. While we (Central Catholic) are not a member of the PIL and, therefore, not in danger, it is a very disappointing announcement. http://www.oregonlive.com/prepsports/oregonian/index.ssf?/xml/story.ssf/html _standard.xsl?/base/sports/1039611416164603.xml The big picture is that an awful lot of kids in Portland will not be competing in baseball, softball, tennis, golf, and track field this spring unless a large amount of money is raised in the next few months. As many of you have no connection to Portland (other than me) you might find it odd that I'm writing you. Heck, we're not even in the PIL for that matter. So what's the connection for you track fans? Pretty simple. Joaquin Chapa, Alec Wall, and Mike McGrath are in the PIL. You've seen their names before. Chapa has run 1:52.72, 3:54.89 and 15:07 xc. McGrath has run 1:50.48, 3:52.38 and 15:26 xc. Wall has run 8:29.61 and is a FootLocker finalist. These are three of the top middle distance/distance runners in the nation. I'd like to see them compete. I'd like it if you got to see them compete. Or at least read about them competing. How can you help? Send a check for $5 or $10 or $100 or $1000 or whatever made out to PIL Athletics 8020 NE Tillamook Ave #200 Portland, OR 97213 I wish it were a joke, and I was just trying to make a few bucks off y'all. On that note, you can drop me a check also if you desire. yours in track field, frankie

t-and-f: The Biggest Payday in History
Gebrselassie's $1 million at Doha yesterday was almost twice as big a payday as any previous in athletics. Ironically previous record was for another Ethiopian setting a 10km world record- Addis Abebe at Jakarta in Jan '93 scored $25K for 1st place and $500K bonus. Gabriela Szabo has women's best of $525,000 at Berlin in '99, a combination of Grand Prix Final award plus share of Golden League jackpot. Geb in '98 earned $433,333 for a similar breakdown. For comparison the prize money awards for Khannouchi and Radcliffe at London Marathon this year were a paltry $255,000
t-and-f: RE: USA Track Foundation: Show masters the money!
Thanks to Ken Stone for the added boost to our Foundation's initial notice. Some thought-provoking comments, and a couple of good leads as well! Ken did make one mis-step I would like to draw your attention to, and that is that out of the total of $150,000 announced so far, the expectation that a proportion would be due to any one group of USATF constituents. First, the Foundation will grant money to specific programs, functions, and operations as it sees fit from unrestricted gifts. This will most likely be done through grants. Second, there will be a small percentage off the top of everything to cover administration of the foundation. We hope that the eventual wealth of the Foundation is of the size to make this insignificant, but you can't raise substantial money from the potentially lucrative area of major gifts and bequests without good people working at it on your behalf. Third, over three-quarters of the current gifts are restricted, meaning that the donor has earmarked the donation or the interest from the principle, to a specific constituent group or program. We welcome and encourage this type of donation for those interested in helping secure a future for an area of our sport not particularly attractive to sponsorship or other sources of income. Thanks again, Ken. Is the check in the mail? Bill Roe President, USA Track Field [EMAIL PROTECTED] or [EMAIL PROTECTED] 360/734-8892 voice or 360/734-8820 fax -- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, 11 December 2002 23:19 To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; [EMAIL PROTECTED]; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: USA Track Foundation: Show masters the money! Greetings, all: Today's USATF News Notes trumpets the impressive start of the USA Track Field Foundation, announced at the national convention in Kansas City. See: http://www.usatf.org/news/showNewsnotes.asp?article=/news/newsnotes/2002-12-11.xml The news is that the foundation has raised more than $150,000 through the generosity of 40 different donors. Among the goals of the foundation is to aid older Americans who would find great joy and benefit from participating if exposed to the very inclusive sport of track field. . . . The Foundation will provide a means to attract and guide funds to new and innovative track field programs in the following categories: Youth, Masters, Elite Athletes, Officials, Coaching and Track Field Facilities. Donations may be directed toward a specific program. Original news release announcing the foundation is at: http://www.usatf.org/news/showRelease.asp?article=/news/releases/2002-12-05.xml So far, we have no breakdown on money earmarked for masters track. But if funds were allocated on the basis of membership -- masters track and LDR would be due an immediate $70,000 or so (minus its share of foundation costs). Such an infusion would more than double the $30,000 USATF promises the Masters Track and Field program for the coming year. USATF Masters TF Treasurer Frank Lulich informs me that MTF has two sources of income: Our USATF Budget ($30,000 a year -- unchanged since '96) and our Athletes' Surcharge Fund (controlled at USATF, Indy). That's it, unless USATF can find some Sponsorship money to share with us. On the one hand, Lulich doubts the Foundation will produce much for Masters. But on the other, he tells me: This is a great opportunity for Masters because I think that we some affluent members who are at the age where they are thinking about such things, and some of these folks have a passion for Masters TF. As (Foundation President) John McArdle says -- it will only take one or two to make a real difference. I'm unclear on the type of foundation USATF has launched, but federal laws govern public charities and private foundations -- and what they must disclose publicly. See some details at: http://www.990online.com/fedlaws.html http://www.awsusa.com/glossary.html USATF News release promised a Web page devoted to the foundation at: http://www.usatf.org/foundation But as of today, the link was dead. I'm gonna be optimistic, however. The guy in charge is a heavyweight fund-raiser. Foundation prez McArdle, a former national-class hammer thrower (and member of the ill-fated 1980 Olympic team out of Oregon with a PR of 241-9 in 1984) is the mayor of Independence, Ore., and director of development for Western Oregon University -- responsible for raising private funds for scholarships, athletics and special projects. He also is vice-chairman of the Mid-Willamette Valley Council of Governments, a board member of the Oregon Mayors Association and an immediate past board member of the U.S. Olympic Committee. Born June 13, 1957, he's eligible for masters in the M45 age group -- but I don't see any records of his having thrown in our meets. An older bio is posted at:

Please go to www.trackandfieldnews.com and vote. And, please, feel free to go to the seciton that allows you to be quoted in the magazine, should you like. gh (garry hill, editor, tfn)
