t-and-f: Finally under way
Netters: New Jersey, the last state in the union to get its indoor season under way, will begin action this weekend. Actually, the first meet will be tomorriw, the Morris County Lid-Lifter at nearby Drew University (near to me, that is). The weekend will be a full one with many of our top athletes seeing action at the Bishop Loughlin meet and others competing in meets at Drew, Fairleigh Dikcinosn, West Point and, outdoors, at East Brunswick. The late start is due to a change which was made some years ago in wrestling weight qualifications. The wrestlking coaches wanted more time for their football-playing athletes to shed weitht so the start of the season was pushed back from Dec. 1 to the third weekend of December which is as late as it can be this year. However, two sports get an exemption from this late start, ice hockey and swimmig. The so-called excuse is that there is a lack of vanues for these sports. This is pure poppyvovk. We have several hundred swimming pools available in our state, about 50 of them in schools, the rest at YMCAs and private sites. We have less than 50 active hockey teams and a couple of dozen rinks. Track has 200-250 schools competing and our available facilities can be counted on the fingers of two hands, almost one hand. Of course, you don't mess around with swimming or hockey parents. Ed Grant PS: Of course, the schools which do not belong to our state association already have their basketball seasons well under way. Which is one reason why they don't belong--they have the peculiar idea that they should run their own athletic programs, not subject them to a committee.

As in, I don't recall there being a lot of undercover action here in California. :-) gh

Actually, Connecticut doesn't officially begin until this weekend as well, since the start date is based on Thanksgiving, which was late on the calendar this year. There was a "scrimmage" meet at Yale last weekend, though. -- Jim Gerweck Runnng Times
