t-and-f: How ready is London for the Olympics? Four days that could make or break the bid

2005-02-12 Thread R. Schmidt
Capital puts on its best face for crucial IOC commission visit

Paul Kelso, sports correspondent
Saturday February 12, 2005
The Guardian

Next Thursday afternoon the tourist throng loitering in Horseguards
Parade will be swollen by a distinctly well-heeled coach-load of
overseas visitors. Outwardly this distinguished multinational group
will resemble nothing more than another tour group taking in the
capital's sights. To the team running London's bid for the 2012
Olympics, however, some of whom will be acting as attentive guides,
they will be the city's most important visitors in 60 years.

On Tuesday the International Olympic Committee's 14-strong evaluation
commission (EC) begins a four-day visit to the capital during which it
will examine London's plans for the 2012 games in minute detail.

The visit to Horseguards Parade, putative site of the beach volleyball
competition eight Augusts hence, will be one of a dozen the IOC team
will make to London's proposed Olympic venues, both real and imagined.

At sites stretching from Wimbledon in the west to the Lea Valley in
the east, the commission members will be subjected to a barrage of
presentations and social events intended to convince them that London
is a live contender for the most hotly contested Olympic race for
decades.

t-and-f: McIlroy in position to follow Coe

2005-02-12 Thread R. Schmidt

Britain can boast the women's 800 metres champion but it has been a
long time since the country had anyone to get excited about in the
men's event.

That could change next month when James McIlroy could be among the
medal contenders at the European Indoor Championships in Madrid.
McIlroy has left it late but, at 28, he ought to underline his
potential at the championship trials which begin today in Sheffield.

McIlroy lies third in the European rankings with the 1min 46.68sec he
clocked last week in Germany. It was the fastest time by a Briton for
13 years and put him sixth on the UK all-time list headed by Sebastian
Coe, a European champion in 1977.

McIlroy's major competition in tomorrow's 800m final should come from
Jimmy Watkins, the Welsh champion who squeezed inside the qualifying
standard for Madrid with a 1min 48.97sec victory in Bratislava last
month.

The withdrawal through injury of Mark Lewis-Francis should ensure an
easy win for the European champion, Jason Gardener, in the 60m.

Long jumpers Chris Tomlinson and Nathan Morgan renew their rivalry in
the men's event while Jade Johnson faces the Olympic heptathlon bronze
medallist Kelly Sotherton in the women's competition.

Meanwhile, athletics could find a permanent home in the capital if
London wins the bid to host the 2012 Olympics.

The London Marathon's charitable trust have promised to invest
£3million to ensure an Olympic stadium is not lost to football in the
same way as the Commonwealth Games stadium in Manchester was.

It is a major boost for the London bid ahead of next week's visit by
the International Olympic Committee's evaluation commission.

t-and-f: Holmes pays heavy price for pulling out of trials

2005-02-12 Thread R. Schmidt
By Mike Rowbottom

12 February 2005

It is a measure of Kelly Holmes's transformed status that she can
equably contemplate a fine of £25,000 for missing this weekend's
Norwich Union AAA Championships and European trials in Sheffield,
which lost another Olympic gold medallist when Mark Lewis-Francis
pulled out of the 60 metres as a precaution after his recent hamstring
injury.

Under a rule established last year following a series of damaging
no-shows at national trials, athletes failing to turn up are deducted
25 per cent of their fees for either the indoor or outdoor season. The
double Olympic champion, currently training in South Africa, is
estimated to be receiving £100,000 for last month's appearance in
Glasgow and her scheduled race in next Friday's Birmingham Grand Prix.

t-and-f: Greek NC, Day 1

2005-02-12 Thread Michalis Nikitaridis
Konstantinos Zalagitis, the outdoor national record holder, returned after 2
years of injury problems and set a national indoor record jumping 16.95m on
the first day of the Greek Indoor Champs.

Georgia Kokloni was the expected winner of the 60m with 7.21, while the new
blood of the country's sprint, Maria Karastamati set a personal best of 7.26
to take the second position.

In the other events, Stella Pilatou won the long jump with 6.58m, followed
by Panayota Koutsioumari and Ioanna Kafetzi, both at 6.40m., while Georgia
Koumnaki clocked 54.22 in the 400m. Personal bests for Georgia Stoyannidou,
winner of the 60mh in 8.16 and Alexandros Theofanov who dominated the men's
race with 7.80

Is that the fastest run on American soil, or had 3:50 been broken before?
