Re: t-and-f: WPV--High School Record?
Costa set an indoor high school girls record of 13-4.5, beating Samantha Shepard's 2002 record by one quarter inch. The thrower for Oklahoma is of course Kevin Bookout, freshman from Stroud OK, the best high school shot putter the last two years. He plans to throw for the track team, or at least that is what he said last spring. At 6-8, 260 he has the physique for both throwing and power forward. He also hit a record 60-some home runs for his high school baseball team and had a 95 mph fastball as a pitcher. Re: t-and-f: Footlocker "scandal"
I don't think the Katie Albright story (running in freshman race instead of seeded at Foot Locker South region) is clear cut or scandalous, and neither she nor her parents are making any beef about it. So the rest of us should probably let it go too. Our first story on Katie Albright said she was "discouraged by meet officials" from entering the seeded race. This came from Katie and her mother in interviews with Ricky Quintana after the race. After talking to Max Mayo (meet director) and Katie's dad yesterday, I revised the story, characterizing the situation as confusing. While Max is saying neither he nor meet referee Mary Sanford were consulted and the decision is the runner's anyway, it seems clear that someone at meet headquarters told Mrs. Albright that the seeded race was not appropriate for Katie. She had only one prior cross country race experience and was only 14. They may not have known about Katie's NC State race or realized what that time represented. The Wolfpack Invitational is run on an oversized 5240 meter course, and Katie stopped at 2 miles thinking the race was over. In any case, Katie and her parents seem happy about their Foot Locker experience and her dad says a family visit would have kept her from going to San Diego anyway. End of story, except for those who want to criticize everything. Our story on Katie: http://www.dyestat.com/3us/2xc/footlocker/south/r-frosh-soph-girls.htm Wolfpack Invitational 9/21/02 at North Carolina State U. 5,240 meters 1. Kathe Merrill, Jordan Durham NC 19:41 2. Katie Albright, Franklin Academy NC 19:59 3. Heather Iatauro, Tri Valley NY 20:12 Interesting here is that even with her pause at 2 miles, Katie beat Heather Iatauro, a very experienced and well travelled runner. Re: t-and-f: South FL Fr/SO Girls?
Albright just started running last summer and onlyj had one cross country race prior to Foot Locker, so it is understandable that meet officials didn't think the seeded race was appropriate. They didn't know what she could do and, possibly, she and her coach didn't know either. t-and-f: HS Relays at USA Nationals
Adding High School relays to the USA nationals was a big success, at least from a competitive standpoint, Friday night at the New York Armory with the 4x800 relays. The 4x200 and 4x400 relays are today. Boys and Girls NY 8:53.67 USR - smash old record by 14 seconds 2nd US record this week for B&G (11:50.86 DMR in Eastern States Tuesday) - 3rd for Stacey Ann Livingston in 7 days (1:29.69 600m in Evian Mayor's Meet last Saturday) - Bronxville NY 9:09.80 only 2.23 seconds off old record (Boys and Girls 9:07.57 in 2000) Three rock steady legs set it up for Stacey Ann Livingston's sizzling anchor of 2:07.1. From right in running order, Akilah Vargas 2:15.6, Keziah Fernandez 2:15.3, Meisue Francis 2:15.6, and Livingston. Considering that Francis split 2:10.8 in the record DMR Tuesday and Livingston has a 2:06.16 season best in the open 800, this group can run faster still. (No spikes allowed in prelims at Simplot.) Expected girls relay showdowns between United Stars PA and Wilson Long Beach CA (aka Teekay Track Club) fizzled when Teekay was a no-show. t-and-f: Alan Webb's college debut is a hit
At the big Great American Cross Country Festival in Rock Hill SC Friday night, high school mile record holder Alan Webb had a smashing debut wearing the maize and blue of the University of Michigan. Webb won the college men's 8k in 24:05, three seconds ahead of teammate Mark Pilja, a cross country All American last year. North Carolina State packed in 5 of the next 10 runners to win the team scoring, 34-67. Thousands of fans, many of them high school runners here for Saturday's races, line the course and roared their approval as Webb worked his way up from 20th after one mile to 3rd after 2 miles. Then, in race announcer Rich Gonzalez' words, Webb launched a 3-mile kick, and streaked across the finish line with his index finger held high. "I guess Webb can run cross country," said Michigan coach Ron Warhurst. Michigan's other celebrated freshman, Nate Brannen of Canada, was 18th. NC State earned a team sweep when their women beat Brigham Young, 41-59, but BYU's Tara Northcutt won individual honors in 16:56 (5k). RE: t-and-f: Youth question
I'm not trying to revive any organizational wars that I wasn't even a part of . I just think that rules set up for professional athletes might not be appropriate for teenagers. The plain fact is that a significant number of youth track athletes do go to the AAU version of JO national championships. What I am hearing is that the old turf battles are the reason for restricting team selection to athletes who compete in the USATF meet. It seems that USATF should take a broader view when it comes to identifying young athletes to represent the country in something like the World Youth Championships. Who's to say that a single meet or two should be the only criteria anyway? Many youth athletes cannot even afford to go to either JO national. These are just kids, not professionals with sponsorship and other support. USATF should be all for developing young talent wherever it is to be found. The Olympic Trials model of competition in a single meet may not be the best model for picking a youth team. The present system deprived the US team of several national stars from Texas, which according to this thread favors the AAU JO meets over the USATF. This includes Brendan Christian, who broke the HS national indoor record at 200 meters this year, and Ychlindria Spears, who broke the HS national record in triple jump this year. As a result, the NCAA actually tried to suspend my college teammate (future Olympian Fred Samara who is now Princeton head coach) because he had the nerve to compete for our country against the Soviet Union! Congress ended such nonsense by specifically putting the authority to send USA teams in the hands of the USOC and its national governing bodies. What you suggest would put us back on the slippery slope toward the 1970's all over again. The AAU, for better or worse, lost their war 23 years ago. Don't ressurrect it. If someone is going to lift verbatim from a copyrighted story, it would be nice to credit the source. This one came from DyeStat. Since I wrote this, it appears that Webb will not run the 4x800 in the Virginia state meet. He will concentrate on the 800 (with Sharif Karie's 1:49+ state record in his sights) and may run only the 4x400 relay in addition. Also, the Golden West may be dropped. June 9 - Golden West Invitational, Sacramento CA June 15 - Raleigh - 4x800 relay, in a battle of the top 3 teams in the US (Atlantic FL, Butler PA, and South Lakes). No word on whether Webb will also run the DMR, where South Lakes has lost twice this year to Atlantic with both teams running top 5 all-time times. Rockford MI sr Dathan Ritzenhein, stung by his loss to Wisconsin freshman Matt Tegenkamp at the US Winter XC Nationals last month, skipped the rest of indoor season to concentrate on the World CC Championships. It paid off splendidly today as Ritz soared to a 3rd place at Ostend, Belgium in 25:46. Tegenkamp finished 5th nine seconds further back. They were the only non-Africans in the top 13. Despite his US exploits (2-time Foot Locker Cross Country national champion, 2-time 2-mile national champion, unbeaten in a high school race in two years), Ritzenhein was unknown on the world stage. No difference in media savvy is involved at all. All of you know that DyeStat would normally have results, as well as highlights and pictures, posted promptly. We are covering both meets this weekend, but the Rivals network went down early Saturday and we could not upload material. Hence, no news on DyeStat from New York yesterday, except what we could put on our chat room and message boards, and no reports from Maryland either. t-and-f: Stacy Dragila gets 3rd WR in 3 weeks
Stacy Dragila raised her world women's pole vault record for the third time in 3 weeks today with a vault of 4.71 meters, or 15'5.5", at the Golden Spike tour stop in Pocatello ID. Dragila had already raised the record once at 4.66 meters, or 15'3.5". Then she made 4.71 on her third try and showed plenty of emotion before the home town crowd. Somersaulting out of the pit, she made an immediate victory lap as the crowd cheered. Dragila then had three unsuccessful tries at 15'9". t-and-f: Alan Webb misses 1000m record by 0.28
A week after his historic sub-4 Mile in New York, South Lakes VA sr Alan Webb tried on the 1000 meter distance for record size at the Microtel Virginia Tech Invitational. He didn't get the record but he came within 0.28 seconds at 2:24.13, good for 3rd best ever among US high school boys. A crowded first turn cost Webb the record as he broke free after 200 meters in 29.3, slowest split of the race. Webb's splits for 200, 400, 500, and 800 meters were: 29.3, 56.8, 1:11.4, and 1:55.4. The 800 meter en route time would be #2 in the US on the current DyeStat Elite rankings. According to Jack Shepard's HIGH SCHOOL TRACK 2001, Webb's performance fits in behind the record of 2:23.85c (George Kersh MS 1987) and 2:242.1d (Miles Irish NY 1983). Coach Scott Raczko said Webb was ready to go under 2:25 and the race ran true to his expectations. Webb pulled along the next five runners to outstanding times of their own: jr Phil Gaetta VA 2:30.39 US#2, jr Richard Smith VA (Webb's teammate) 2:30.41 US#3, soph Matt DeBole NC 2:31.55 US#5, soph Alex Clayton VA 2:31.94 US#6, and sr Shane Stroup MD 2:32.76. The boys 1000 marks were part of a blizzard of top seasonal marks in this huge gathering of 200 schools from VA, WV, TN, NC, SC, GA, MD, PA, NJ, NY, KY. Some of the most noteworthy Saturday with half a day still to run: * Kelley Otstott VA 2:57.27 1000m US#1, followed by Mo Hagan VA 2:58.54 US#3, and Randy Buzzell MD 2:59.09 US#5. * Petersburg VA boys 1:30.50 4x200 US#4, with 55 meter qualifying leader James Mathis in lead-off. * Bethel VA girls 1:43.67 4x200 US#7, as anchor Ara Towns held off fast closing Tysha Colon of Woodson DC 1:43.71 * Two of the nation's leading high jumpers needed a jumpoff to break a tie at 5-8, with Jennifer Nelms VA edging Krystle Moss VA. * soph Ryan McCoy VA won the triple jump in 46-11, 3rd best in the US this season. Friday Highlights: Stephen Haas NC 9:06.97 3200 US#2 - Lacy Janson FL 12-4 US#3t - Lindsey Neuberger VA 46-9.5 SP US#2 - Robinson VA girls 9:32.28 US#3 - Jerome Mathis VA 6.39 55m trials US#4t - Ara Towns VA 7.15 55m trials US#5 (Friday highlights by Jim Spier). RE: t-and-f: Unusual names in our sport
And then there is I-Perfection Harris, of Poly Prep HS in New York, who was perfection in winning the long jump in US#1 indoor season mark of 23-10 and the triple jump in US#3 45-10 Saturday in the Hispanic Games at the New York Armory. And note that it is spelled I [hyphen] Perfection, not I [period] Perfection. t-and-f: RE: Flowers, dad and son
Richmond Flowers also has a younger son, Bill, who was a hurdler last year at Pelham AL High School, though not as good as his dad. He won the Alabama 6A (large schools) division 110H in 14.13. Earlier, he was 6th at the Mobile Meet of Champions at 14.39, with his dad in attendance. t-and-f: Good early High School indoor marks in US
The first DyeStat Elite rankings for the 2001 indoor season have been published at http://www.dyestat.rivals.com/default.asp?p=2&sid=790&stid=8079281 Most athletes are just getting warmed up, but we have 229 performances from 25 meets that beat the cutoffs for the DyeStat Elite top 100 national rankings. We already have a 7 foot boy high jumper (Dan Olson NY), a 40 foot girl triple jumper (Shenae Dawkins NY), a 50 foot girl shot putter (Laura Gerraughty NH), a 15-foot boy pole vaulter (Jeff Martzall IN), and an aptly named boy horizontal jumper, I. Perfection Harris NY (leading the US at 22-8 and 45-9). The greatest performance of the young season is New Yorker Stacey Livingston's 1:30.98 for 600 meters, the second best US prep all time. Livingston also runs on Boys and Girls High's US#1 girls 4x400 team at 3:53.58. Others flirting with 2000 season best levels are Jeff Robbins' Air Time vaulting teammates Molly Lederman and Samantha Shepard of MA, tied at 12-7.5; Erin Donohue NJ 4:58.74 mile; Shane Stroup MD 4:01.53 1500m; and Vikas Gowda MD 58-6.5 SP. RE: t-and-f: Olympic Journalism Ban
With amateurism no longer an issue, what is the rationale and/or justification? We've heard the rule, but no one has explained the reason. RE: t-and-f: Missing in Action
DyeStat has this item reported from Jamaica on Dwight Thomas: "Dwight Thomas, winner of the Golden West and the Foot Locker Outdoors 100 this year, ran a PR of 10.12 in the semifinal heats in the Jamaican Olympic Trials! Though he wasn't in the top 3 in the 100, reports say he'll probably be on the relay team. He also made the top 3 in the 200 so he's going to Sydney for sure." Thomas was a senior at Northwestern high school in MD this year but did not compete for Northwestern. Instead, he was in training for the Jamaican Olympic team and ventured out unattached to pick up wins in big invitationals: Simplot Games, National Scholastic Indoor, Golden West, and Foot Locker Outdoor.
