 That’s a different thing, I think.

 branch=* is presumably an identifier for a specific instance of a chain,
 where a ref is not appropriate.

 Yes, I forgot to look at the links. Is there a reason ref isn't appropriate?
 I've used ref for store numbers; would this be used when there's both a
 number and a name?

Well, the 7-Eleven branches here have store numbers which are often
found on a sticker near the door. This would be an exact fit for the
ref=* tag. But each store has a branch name apart from the store
number, and these names are what I would put in the branch=* tag.

According to http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:brand

The brand=* is a larger entity that a place advertises itself as part of

Which means that you put Burger King or Barclay's or McDonald's
into the brand tag.

We put into the branch tag the branch name. Look at this webpage
listing the branches of Bank of the Philippine Islands in my city:
http://info.bpiexpressonline.com/bpiprod/bpibranch.nsf/Branches/BPI/Las+Pi%C3%B1as?OpenDocument

The branch names are those names in bold like Almanza, Almanza Uno
Las Piñas, and SM Southmall Express Center. These branch names are
prominently displayed in the signboard of the bank outlet. So we put
Bank of the Philippine Islands into brand=* (or usually name=*) then
Almanza into branch=*.

I thought in this case, we use operator=* ?

From wiki.. The operator tag is used to name a company, corporation,
person or any other entity who is in charge of the operation of a
certain map object.

I think the branch/location could simply be added to the name tag.

amenity=bank
operator=Bank of the Philippines
name=Bank of the Philippines Almanza Uno Las Piñas

This is for example how I tag chain restaurants, with the
location/branch appended to the name tag.

We thought about it but putting the location/branch into the name tag
makes it harder to collect all of the banks under the same brand.
Take note that due to mergers and acquisitions, multiple banks may be
under the same operator. In addition, putting the branch name into the
name tag makes it longer and harder to render. I prefer putting that
separable piece of information into a separate tag in the first place.
