[Tails-dev] Help needed with screenshots of Mac boot menu with Tails

2015-11-02 Thread Spencer

Hi,

sajolida:
Thanks a lot for working on this, you saved me a bunch of headache!

No worries; I happened to be in a room full of Macs that day :)

That's very specific already!

I'll stick to the black one then to me more future-proof as it comes
from the new versions of Os X.

[Tails-dev] Help needed with screenshots of Mac boot menu with Tails

2015-10-24 Thread Spencer

Hi,

sajolida:
I see that you changed the background from gray to
black. Was this on purpose?

Within the current Mac Boot ROM version (2015-001) [0], there are two
background colors:

- Gray = Old (Pre Mavericks/Yosemite)
- Black = New (Post Mavericks/Yosemite)

I am unable to confirm anything more specific :(

It is up to you which you will use but they are both correct.

Old = Tested on:

- Old = MacBookPro9,2
- New = MacBookPro11,3

Super cool, again! I see that you changed the background from gray to
black. Was this on purpose? Otherwise, I'll add them straight away to
the new instructions.

The size is fine or otherwise I'll crop some of the background.

Yes, let's do that as we're all three on tails-dev and nobody from
tails-testers answered.

I think we have enough. I'll phrase the instructions in a way that makes
it clear that the screenshot might vary a bit depending on the Mac
version. But I still think they are going to be important to clarify the
context (what screen are we talking about).

Ah! I like this better :)

Ok, that's easier for us then.

Yes, that's minor enough.

So now I'm convinced that I want to use your screenshots. Could you do a
last thing for me? Could you update both the one for DVD and the one for
USB and have the Tails DVD and Tails USB selected (the arrow below the
Tails one)?

Many thanks! I really hate dealing with Mac.

I will keep this in dev since you seem to like reading this kind of
stuff :)

Do you need tests on another Mac?

All should perform the same based on their Boot ROM Version; here[0] is
a list. An OSXpert, or someone with access every Boot ROM Version,
would need to fully confirm the subtle differences in each.

I cannot. The disk icon image is what shows :(

Here [1] :)

Does it make any difference if the USB Stick is installed
using the command line?

Nope. Tail 1.6 prompts the same screen and icon set on startup from USB
Sticks that have Tails cloned via both the Tails Installer and Bash.

Direct USB Stick install might differ, but maybe not since I think the
startup icons are driven by the firmware on whatever device is in
question.

Well, now I'm wondering ...

No worries. Although Cheetah, Panther, Leopard, and Lion introduce
major graphic updates, it seems that there are only two major startup
screens Mac users will be presented with today:

- One for Yosemite & El Capitan.
- One for Lion to Mavericks.

The differences here are icons and background colors; minor enough that
it isn't confusing (unless they have the bug that shows a ghost volume,
but an update would resolve that).

We could do a user driven image swap on the Mac instructions for higher
accuracy.

[Tails-dev] Help needed with screenshots of Mac boot menu with Tails

2015-10-21 Thread Spencer

Hi,

Spencer:
[Something close to correct]

Actually, here[0] is the DVD startup screen, and here[1] is the USB
Stick startup screen.

These are a hybrid of Yosemite, El Capitan, and whatever came on the
2009 macs in this library (depreciated startup disk and USB icons appear
at boot).

Let me know if you would like these adjusted in any way.

Spencer

[Tails-dev] Help needed with screenshots of Mac boot menu with Tails

2015-10-21 Thread Spencer

Hi,

sajolida:
I want something like this but wonder what the label is with Tails:

http://cdn.osxdaily.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/boot-from-os-x-yosemite-installer.jpg

Using a library computer I can see that the label is 'Windows', and
unlike Kali and the likes, there is no extra EFI volume :)

That's for the instructions on the website.

Bonus point if you manage to send a direct PNG screenshot and not a
photo of the screen but I'm not sure that's possible.

Find those hard drive volume icons and make one yourself (I will if you
provide some sizing info). There are two volumes; one labeled
'Macintosh HD' (if not customized), and one labeled 'Windows'.

2015-10-21 Thread sajolida
Hi,

Could someone with a Mac and a typical OS X install, take a screenshot
of what the boot menu looks like with a Tails USB stick plugged in?
Either installed using `dd`, either installed using Tails Installer
(please specify which one and if that makes a difference).

I want something like this but wonder what the label is with Tails:
