I don't know all the ways it can get embedded there. Either way, if you start the installation, it'll never ask you for a key and you'll find everything's authorized automatically. Some machines (like this HP laptop) have very obvious OEM licenses (the string "OEM" shows up several times in the BIOS record) that probably wouldn't transfer well to VirtualBox, etc. cheers, Stewart --- Post to this mailing list talk@gtalug.org Unsubscribe from this mailing list https://gtalug.org/mailman/listinfo/talk
[GTALUG] Raspberry Pi High-Availability / Remote Serviceable Solution
This is a follow on from my talk back November. Which at the GTALUG this evening I gave a small follow up. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cwESAjUBuj0 At the end of the original talk I discussed having issue with electrical isolation on the USB serial adapter. I've since solved that with an inexpensive part that's exactly fit for purpose. Below is the parts list: * USB-C to Serial Port UART Board Module Isolated USB to TTL Module 3.3V https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005001644508314.html * TP-Link Jetstream 10-Port Gigabit Smart Switch with 8-Port PoE+ https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B0141JX92G/ * Dupont Crimping Tool https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B087QY413W/ * JST-XHP Housings and Connectors https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B07MBCLPBK/ * USB C to USB 2.0 A Cables https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B01ASXBY62/ * GeeekPi Raspberry Pi 4 PoE HAT https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B0833PP65P I also showed off my Build of the Raspberry Pi modular rack, constructed from the design by Uptime Labs. https://uplab.pro/2020/12/raspberry-pi-server-mark-iii/ I have a second one of these I printed and assembled but don't actually need. If someone interested, I'd sell if for $100 to cover the cost of the 5 case fans, steel rod and full spool of filament used in it's construction. -- Scott Sullivan --- Post to this mailing list talk@gtalug.org Unsubscribe from this mailing list https://gtalug.org/mailman/listinfo/talk

Thanks Steward! That was a nice find! Giles, You can download Windows iso direct from Microsoft: https://www.microsoft.com/software-download/windows10 Finding a Windows 7 or 8 iso takes some effort, but you can find them somewhere. I wiped Windows, but the firmware data is still there: # cat /sys/firmware/acpi/tables/MSDM MSDMU:_ASUS_Notebook ASUS-K--K-K# (License string obfuscated.) 'strings' not required. Fascinating: thank you Stewart, this may make it possible to install Windows 10 in VirtualBox - of course I still have to lay hands on a matching version of Windows, although those are easier to find than legitimate license keys. Hmm - I wonder if the "ASUS" at the beginning of the key means it only works with Asus versions of W10 ... -- Giles https://www.gilesorr.com/ giles...@gmail.com --- Post to this mailing list talk@gtalug.org Unsubscribe from this mailing list https://gtalug.org/mailman/listinfo/talk

If the file /sys/firmware/acpi/tables/MSDM exists (it's read-only to root), there's probably a key embedded in there you can pull out with strings Stewart --- Post to this mailing list talk@gtalug.org Unsubscribe from this mailing list https://gtalug.org/mailman/listinfo/talk
