You can google to see if your synth allows for pitch changes and if it does

with the synth via a script without getting pretty deep.
It works well with my Eloquence synth but I don't think I remember it

supporting pitch changes but since I am so weak in this arena will just
mention that googling or contacting a synth manufacturer is a good jump off

It is really nice to have my caps spoken in a higher pitch again and should
be a basic feature of any screen reader - and usually is.
PS: I had to turn off the speaking of caps in a higher pitch in the WE

CapEnhance does not have this problem at all.

Hi Rick, and this is for everyone too trying out CapEnhance,

A couple of things in your note I'd like to respond to.
First, I'm not sure if I've ever heard of a synthesizer which did not
support pitch changes.
If this were so, then, for the synthesizer in question, it would be
impossible to change pitch on the fly using the speech parameters hotkeys.
Does this actually ever happen, namely, that you cannot change pitch use
thing those hotkeys?
CapEnhance uses exactly the same method of changing pitch as the user does
using hotkeys.
Second, in my latest version of CapEnhance, I inserted a routine which
temporarily disables both the screen and keyboard capitalization before
speaking a cap and then resets them to their previous states.
This was to address the problem you had with my earlier version of the app
which produced choppy speech even with Eloquence.
Of course, I'm no wizard, and who can know what effect the app will have
with all of the various synthesizers, not to mention audio devices and their
accompanying software.
One thing I could do is produce a version of the app which allows for tone
changes for caps along with pitch.
Again, only real-world testing would prove its effectiveness.
This app was my attempt to help you out in your difficulties, and, while I'm
glad it works for you with Eloquence, I had serious doubts whether it would
help everybody with all synthesizers. Smile
Indeed, I have noticed a little delay when moving over caps using the
Microsoft Speech Platform synthesizer.
Ah, but this is how we learn and progress, isn't it? smile

Thanks to you and everyone for the feedback, and please keep it coming.

Best regards,

Hi Rod: That was a good script and you approached it in a good manner -
don't ReInvent the wheel just make it roll better.
There are indeed variables beyond your control that only some large scale
testing by others can provide feedback on.
As you mention, I do think most synths provide for pitch changes but since I
have not researched it I cant say for sure - so didn't.
I actually forgot that a sound card and the drivers might impact this as
well and the combinations of synths and sound drivers, cards, on many
peoples machines will vary almost at every client machine.
So, the more feedback you get, and hopefully information about synths and
sound cards, the better.
Either you can have folks do the research about synth pitch or you can try
and do it yourself but it will need to be done me thinks.
As for sound cards and drivers I don't know, but don't think, they should be
a problem since they all respond to pitch changes or there wouldn't be music
so it depends on whether AI Squared is providing the necessary hooks to the
various synths, if that is how it is done, and how the target synth handles
pitch changes in their engine - likely from a performance standpoint as you
noted with the Microsoft Test.
Anyway, I cant thank you enough for this little app since it takes away one
of those annoyances that just add up and up and up if you spend hours and
hours and hours working with things you need to identify as having specific
letters capitalized.

Re: Cap enhanced app

2015-03-26 Thread David via Talk
Well, Rod, if you have never heard about any synths not supporting pitch
changing, then your dreamy days are long gone. As a matter of fact,
there is a load of synths on the market, who do not support any
pitching. The whole series of Scansoft voices, and some of the SAPI
voices from other manufacturers. Think, but cannot confirm it on this
computer, that I had trouble with the SAPI voices Mike and Mary from
Microsoft.

The pitch support has nothing to do with the sound card itself. You try
the same voice on as many sound cards you want, if the synth
manufacturer did not prepare his voice for pitching, it simply cannot be
pitched. Not with WE, nor with NVDA, Jaws or any other software. The
pitching has to be hard coded into the very core of the voice itself.
What's more, if you try to set a pitch value on a voice that does not
support pitching, and your script does not make particular error
checking on the operation, your app will crash. Since I have not yet
tried your app, I do not know whether this is the risk with your code.
But if you haven't done so yet, you are encouraged very strongly to make
special error handling on the part that attempts to adjust the pitch of
the synth.

Even the RealSpeak voice that came with my Window-Eyes, does not support
pitch. So like I said, your dreamy days would not keep long.

Yes, Eloquence, ESpeak and Dectalk all supports pitching. If my memory
serves me right, I seem to remember that the Vocalizer voices had some
limitations, whilst the Vocalizer Express series had pitch support. But
I am not privileged to use the Vocalizer series, so cannot convirm that
very statement - it was taken from memory of some postings I saw back in
time on the list.

In addition, some voices does have a rather wierd kind of support.
Theire pitch varies so much, that they get bothersome in listening to,
even with slight adjustment of the pitch.

It all amounts up to the reason, why many users may find a beeping sound
for the Caps more helpful. Or, some screen readers offer you the chance
to have the word "cap" or equivalents, spoken in front of the
capitalized character. If all voices had supported the pitch setting,
there hardly would have been any usage for such alternatives. But like
already stated, the world of speech synths, is flooded with voices with
no pitch adjustment at all.

Rick,
The fact that a sound card can play music, has absolutely nothing to do
with its capabilities of adjusting the pitch of a voice. Playing music,
the sound card merely plays back a pre-recorded sound file. The sound
file can be pitch-adjusted, since you can affect what bits are sent to
the sound card. For instance, a music file can have its frequency bits
altered, and it wil affect the pitch to a certain degree. Sound that is

Synthetic speech, although partially being pre-recorded snip-its of

Neither has this to do with any sound card driver. The pitch support of

Hi David:
Actually, I didn't know that.
I am not big on accessibility or sound or anything at the lower levels and
pretty much do Application Programming for Business Systems.
So, it is the synth that handles the pitch and the sound card is not
involved in the Process to any great extent?
Is that what you are saying?
If that is the case the best bet might be to research the various synth
features to see if they support engine pitch changes.
That is also why I let Rod build the script - it is not in my technical
wheel house.
So, you guys might build a list of synths that allow for pitch changes and
those that don't and then the community would know which ones they might
want to look at without slogging through all of them guessing.
I can say Eloquence does since I am using it with Rods Script and it works
quite well indeed.
So there is one paid synth you can put in the "Supported" category.

Hi,
The older vocalizer engine does not support pitch. Vocalizer Expressive does.

You could send pitch changes to the older Vocalizer voice and it'll do nothing
as far as responding to the pitch change. Same thing goes for some
synthesizers, they do not support tone changes, such as the cepstral voices
through SAPI.

that is what is going on.
You can google to see if your synth allows for pitch changes and if it does
Contac t AI Squared since I don't know if there is a way of working directly
with the synth via a script without getting pretty deep.
It works well with my Eloquence synth but I don't think I remember it
working with the Microsoft synth and I think I remember the Microsoft synth
supporting pitch changes but since I am so weak in this arena will just
mention that googling or contacting a synth manufacturer is a good jump off
point to find out what is possible.
It is really nice to have my caps spoken in a higher pitch again and should
be a basic feature of any screen reader - and usually is.
PS: I had to turn off the speaking of caps in a higher pitch in the WE
Control Panel for the Screen since it was really slowing down speech but the
CapEnhance does not have this problem at all.

If so use the pitch or tone approach, if not then use the beeper approach.

RE: window eyes 9.1 demo problem

2015-03-26 Thread Chris Grabowski via Talk
Hi,
The 60 day evaluation copy uses a specific serial number that is authorized for
Dectalk, Eloquence, Vocalizer and Vocalizer expressive.
The serial number is GWWE60EVAL if you go to:
http://www.gwmicro.com/voices and drop that serial number in you can see the
synthesizers that are authorized.

So Window-eyes will run for 60 days with any premium synthesizer.

Hope this helps clear up the confusion.

The Window-eyes offer for users of Microsoft Office uses a generic GWWEOffice
serial number.

This serial number is not authorized for the premium synthesizers. This is
why if you switch to eloquence and are running the Window-eyes offer,
Window-eyes turns into a demo if Eloquence isn't purchased.
If a user purchases Eloquence they are sent a unique serial number that is
authorized for Eloquence.

a trial version will run as a 30 minute demo if you are useing the
decaccess32 synthisizer with a new installation.
even a full version will run as a demo if you are useing the default
decaccess32 synth that it installs if you don't have a license for this
synthisizer.
once you change to another free or paid voice then it will run as a trial or
full paid version of w e.
i found this out with my winbook, which had never had a copy of w e
installed on it. my desktop i have only upgraded. i did not unoinstall and
start over. so the decaccess32 is still working as a full version.

Hi
The Window-Eyes demo is now a timed evaluation which is supposed to run for
60 days on a computer that has never had the evaluation on it.

If the computer has ever had a Window-Eyes evaluation on it, it should still
run as a 30-minute demo version.

On Windows 7, as long as the machine is fully rebooted, the demo should give
you another 30 minutes. If you just log out of Windows and log back in, it
immediately stops working--well, more or less because it keeps telling you
it will shut down in less than 5 minutes.

I know there is an attachment, several have told me it really does exist,
however my computer keeps saying, "no attachment found."
The technology specialist at the NM commission for the blind, Curtis chong
suggested two different approaches for me to retrieve it.

1. He sugested that after I open the email, I hit Alt F, then e then
I. what ever this is suppose to do, it just takes me back to the menu.

2. 2. He suggested that I open the message, press Alt, arrow down to
"Save attachments" hit enter.
Needless to say, that won't work either.
Infact, if the message is open, it just makes a metallic sound. Dink.

I am so frustrated. Any suggestions for me.

Re: CapEnhance Idea

2015-03-26 Thread David via Talk
Basically, this discussion is moving more into a level that would fit
the Scripting list the more. But one issue is that you don't know
whether a synth has pitch support, until you have tried it out, or have
access to the specs of that particular synth. Of course, your script can
try to set the pitch, and if it returns an error - let it change to
another synth, or beeping mode. Trouble is that some synths will throw
an error on you, others will just mutually dispose the pitch call. So
even an error check will not always be reliable for determining the
pitch support of the actual voice.

For another thing, even if you get a list of all mainstream synths, like
you Rick suggested, I am ready to make your dreams a bit gloomy. Mind
you, there is quite an amount of manufacturers who only do locale
synths, or may let their International synths support certain features,
that the locale synths don't; and visaversa. In short, even with a list
of available voices, you have no guarantee that your app won't run into
some sort of a locale voice that does not support the feature, and could
cause trouble in such an approach. Had to deal with a whole series of
voices of the locale kind, when I built the Extended Dictionary, and had
to call for certain features.

All in all, the only safe way, is to let the user do the choice. Make it
easy for the user to get to the setting, and make good info on the
matter of non-pitching voices. That is, for instance both through the
App Central introduction, the help screen of the app, and even when
changing to Pitch-adjustment, let the user be informed that not all
voices do support the pitching, and hence let him be informed that if
his voice would happen to be in this group, he will have no effect of
the pitch setting. A global list of voices supporting and not supporting
the different features, is a bit of an undertake. OK, it may be possible
to collect such a list, but it would take time, and may likely not be
very reliable. Even you could experience cases where a SAPI4 voice would
not support the pitching, whereas the SAPI5 edition of the same voice
will. The landscape of it all is quite a mess, agreed, but that is the
way things stand.

Sorry for being a "gloomer" here, but a few years experience in voice
handling has taught me a couple of lessons.

like sound card enhancements, will improve your speech responsiveness or
quality. But that is simpy due to the fact that such features could
conflict or slow down the processing of the data thrown on the sound
cardby the speech engine. Such interference should be avoided, and
that's why you are encouraged to turn off enhancing features of your
hardware.

In its very basic, look on it this way. The screen reader sends some
text to the Speech engine. The engine converts it into speech, made up
of a line of tiny pieces of sound. This chain of sound, now is being
sent to your sound card, which sees it just like a music file, and plays
it back to you through the speakers. All the text-to-speech processing,
including all speed, pitch and tone settings, is handled directly inside
the speech engine. Usually, this engine is a piece of software directly
inside your computer. If you are using a hardware synth, the software
has been burned onto an EProm inside the hardware box. The technology is
exactly the same, only difference is the physical media for storing the
software, and the factual connection method.

A couple of years ago, I wrote a quite extensive article on the matter
of processing text-to-speech data, and how a speech synth is basically
built up. It was posted on the GW info list, and you may find it in the
archives. For those who does not want the hazzle of searching archives,
and who still want to dive a bit more into the matter, write me off-list
and I can mail you a Word-document version of the article. It is only
dealing with the very top of the iceberg, but still is about 14 pages
long. Does that give an idea about the high-tech issue of voicing text?
Smile.

Good thing that we have a set of easy switches provided through the
screen reader, to handle the individual settings of the synth. Smile.
True, there does exist a few standards for the interface of a synth,
like the SAPI standard. But they are somehow vague, and what works for
one synth, may not work for another. Even what works for one voice, may
differ from another voice, even inside the very same synth. Make perfect
setup of one Microsoft voice, switch to another Microsoft voice, and you
can start all over, should you want the best results. Enjoy.

I can say Eloquence does since I am using it with Rods Script and it works

So there is one paid synth you can put in the "Supported" category.

Rick,
The fact that a sound card can play music, has absolutely nothing to do
with its capabilities of adjusting the pitch of a voice. Playing music,
the sound card merely plays back a pre-recorded sound file. The sound
file can be pitch-adjusted, since you can affect what bits are sent to
the sound card. For instance, a music file can have its frequency bits
altered, and it wil affect the pitch to a certain degree. Sound that is
a playback of the recordings of some sort, can be altered in the
playback software, not on the harddware of the sound card itself.

Synthetic speech, although partially being pre-recorded snip-its of
sound, is a whole other chapter of that story. The voice does not make
use of any music playback software - as you well are aware of. It has
its own dedicated software, built into the synth itself. If the
manufacturer has not built in pitch support with this software, no
matter what your software, the screen reader, or any app attempt to send
for pitch-adjusting calls, the voice will not be pitched. No matter what
sound card you use, or the rest of your computer specs. Its like with
your car. If it hass no hook on the rear end, you cannot have it pull a

Neither has this to do with any sound card driver. The pitch support of

Window Eyes Tip not very helpful

2015-03-26 Thread Rick Blair via Talk
Today, I got the following tip on the Window Eyes Tip of the day:

Window-Eyes allows the mouse pointer to be locked on either a vertical or
horizontal axis, providing an efficient way for low vision users to track
the mouse pointer across a straight line.

While this alerts the user to a great feature of WE, it offers no help on
how to accomplish the mouse locking capability.

I am not asking how to do this, but only to offer possible improvement to
this tip in the future.

I think the issue is that you have Adobe Reader/Window-Eyes configured to only
load one page at a time instead of the entire document. If you update this
setting in Adobe Reader, all pages of the PDF file will be available in the
Browse Mode buffer. The Accessibility Setup Assistant can make it easier for
you to configure this and other options. You can find it under the Edit menu,
Accessibility pull down. Keep in mind that doing so could impact performance if
you are working with a really large PDF. Good luck.

document. I need to get out of browse mode or use the mouse to navigate
to the next page, re enable browse mode and use page up to get to the
top of the next page to begin reading the subsequent page. This is quite
tedious. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I am using the latest version of Adobe Reader, Windows 7 Pro.

I would like to attach examples, but they are proprietary files.

Thanks, Rick

Browse mode enhancedupgrade message

2015-03-26 Thread Dave Bahr via Talk
Hi, I just had Firefox crash and received a message from the browse mode
enhanced app that it was not available on the version of window eyes
that I was running. That's very strange as I am running window eyes
9.1.0. Just wondering if anybody else had this. Consequently, the app
was updated just this morning.

Re: Very Minor Suggestion Regarding the B and Shift B Command in Browse Mode

2015-03-26 Thread Christopher Hallsworth via Talk
Window-Eyes could always say "no next" or "no previous" followed by the
control you're trying to navigate to.

Yesterday, I was navigating through a Web page and I pressed the letter

"no" as in a form where you have a "yes" button and a "no" button. It's
almost funny, really, and I found it amusing. I wonder if the message
should be changed to something like "no button available" or words to
that effect.

Re: Some PDF files seem to only allow reading of one page at a time

2015-03-26 Thread Lloyd Rasmussen via Talk
By default, if there are more than 50 pages, Adobe Reader will show you the
PDF one page at a time. You can change this limit in accessibility
settings. If you don't change it, you can use ctrl-PgDn and Ctrl-PgUP to
navigate among pages, or shift-ctrl-N to jump to a particular sequential
page number. For the page number dialog to work, you must use the
Window-Eyes bypass key, Insert-B, first, because ctrl-shift-N is the Field
Name hotkey. Hope that all makes sense and is useful.

Hi Robin,

If you're referring to the different apps with the word "enhance" in their
name, these are only loaded when Window-Eyes is running.
Therefore, the answer to your question is "no."

Hth,

navigating headings in firefox is really slow

2015-03-26 Thread Dave Bahr via Talk

Hi folks,

Does anyone else have a serious delay when navigating headings in
firefox? I have we 9.1.0 and ff 36, yes I could go back to ff 30 for
mouse functionality, but I prefer to stay up to date. There are times
when I can count about 7 to 10 seconds between pressing the h or shift h
key and WE speaking the next heading. It seems to happen if I have
multiple tabs which I have all the time. The arrow keys are also slow
but not nearly as bad as the headings.

any ideas on this one?
