I have had enough

2016-03-18 Thread Neville via Talk

Hi Listers,

I have had enough doing battle with Windows 10 wanting to update my
system every couple of hours. So, it is time to stop it in its tracks
before I loose my cool.

A couple of weeks ago there was mention of a file in two formats to deal
with this pest. I thought I had saved the messages to a safe place but
now can't locate them.

Could someone please post the info once again so I can deliver this pest
a mortal blow.

Also some details on how to use the file would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Neville.

copying a URL within an e-mail.M Most e-mails I receive with URLs have

I can read a few words of a line, then nothing. Arrow down another line

Does the same thing when I am writing an Email, and then attempt to read
what I have written.

Sometimes if I Maximize or Restore Becky, I can read the text until I
edit something. Once that change has taken place, I can no longer read
an entire live of text. Reading is quite jumbled and will not read
every line, and every word in a line of text.

This just started happening. Before then, everything read fine.

have I bumped some switch, or made a change by accident?

Hi I seen yesterday meaning Tuesday.
That people are using Eudora with window-eyes.
So where do you get the version that works well with window-eyes?
Also then once you go to the web site to get it?
How then do you set it up so that when you open it?
You go right to your inbox and can read and delete your e-mails from there?
Also can you group messages by conversation if so how do you make it so
you can have threads that you can open and close?

One last thing is when you forward A message to someone?
How do you take all of the information out of the message and only keep
the message that you are forwarding and not all of the header
information and the sent path and the return path and all of that
showing in the message that you are sending?

Re: Losing Touch, or do I still have it?

2016-03-18 Thread Stan Gowin via Talk
Dave,

For me I think it depends on when you ask. Some days I feel access to software
is better than ever. Then I find something that doesn’t work and I feel as
you do.

Thinking more deeply, the issue is that software and devices that employ it are
far more pervasive than ten or fifteen years ago. The iPhone with Voice Over is
a marvel I couldn’t imagine back when I started programming in the late
1970’s. On the Apple platforms, especially IOS, accessibility is better and
available for more apps than ever. Does that mean it’s perfect? Of course not,
there are always going to be apps that don’t work well for blind users. There
are apps that by their very nature cannot do so.

On the Windows platforms the emphasis has been to make them more like phones
and tablets and this has hurt access. Microsoft has until recently, pulled back
from their accessibility efforts, leaving features of Windows, internet
browsing and office applications woefully inaccessible. Recent developments at
Microsoft lead me to believe they’ve realized there are problems with
accessibility and they are working to address them. A case in point is
Microsoft now has a dozen or so developers working on accessibility issues for
the MS Office suites.

I still work for a software company and some of the packages they use are not
very accessible. I believe this is due to many more low-cost choices for
software companies can purchase. When cost is lower, some aspects of the
software are lacking, often accessibility. I try to raise issues with the
vendors when they arise but I must report only mixed success.

Summing up, I think the choices we have for personal use provide better
accessibility than ever. What we have to contend with in the work environment
is far less positive.

Regards,
Stan

RE: no programs starting under windows 10

2016-03-18 Thread Rod Hutton via Talk
Hi Jed,

If you're selecting apps to launch through the Cortana search list, use up
and down arrow keys to be sure that the item is properly selected.
Indeed, use Control-Shift-S or Control-Numpad-5 to read the current item to
be certain.
As for the Messaging app, I've read about it on the web and it promises to
be powerful in the future, but, at present, it is not fully intergrated into
the operating system, as far as I can see.
If you want to send text messages within Windows 10, I recommend Skype.
There is a program called mysms which has an Android smart phone app, and
what it does is allow you to read and send messages to and from your Android
phone on your Windows desktop using the installed app.
Apple has prevented the app from working with their devices.
Again, this is what I know, and, of corse, others may know more.

Hth,

Rod

Problems with WE and Windows10

2016-03-18 Thread Yusuf Osman via Talk
Sorry if this message comes out a little garbled as I'm having one or two
problems with WE since I upgraded to Windows 10 Home yesterday.

I was using Windows7 with WE9.4. I upgraded to Windows10 and each time WE
loaded I got a descending set of beeps which I've always assumed meant that WE
had crashed. I had previously read the upgrade instructions which referred to
the need to install WE9.2 in order to get back the Mirror driver. I did this,
and the descending beeps stopped. I then upgraded to WE9.4 and am now having
the same problem.

Despite the descending tones as soon as WE starts, it appears to be working,
although it has difficulties in Windows Explorer, running very slowly and
sometimes crashing completely. Also, items in the start menu aren't always read
correctly. By that I mean if I type in the search box and cursor down to go
through the options, sometimes nothing is said.

Also, in Outlook response from WE after pressing the tab key to move between
email list, search area, etc. is sometimes very slow.

Another problem in Outlook is that when a new message comes in, a notification
pops up which reads the message. I'm guessing though this is a setting
somewhere in Outlook, but I've got no idea how to stop this from happening, it
never happened in Windows7 and Outlook 2013. Incidentaly I presume I'm still
using Outlook2013? Perhaps Windows10 has defaulted to something else.

Any help much appreciated.
Yusuf

Having said that, though, there were versions of Dropbox that did not
respond to Windows keystrokes when in the system tray, only responding to
mouse clicks. You may have one of those versions. Routing your mouse to
the Dropbox icon and then left clicking might open up the menu for you.
Also, using the Window-Eyes interface to the system tray, INSERT S, might

be

easier. Since I don't have one of the versions of Dropbox that act this
way, I can't tell you for certain whether you should left click or right
click, but maybe this will get you started.

If you go to dropbox preferences on your computer, not on their website,
there is an option to "Show Dropbox Badge." You may also hear the word
"Down" indicating that you press the DOWN ARROW to change the option.
Change this preference to "Never." For me, that eliminated all of the
problems with Word and Excel files in my Dropbox folder. I get to
preferences by finding Dropbox in the system tray, pressing SPACE which
brings up a menu, and then DOWN ARROW until I get to Preferences.

Re: An alternative for User Windows?

2016-03-18 Thread Tom Kingston via Talk

Jonathan,

Here's a quick crash course answer. And it's all off the top of my head.
So I assume no liability for consequential, existential, or
intercontinental damages.

You can only have one "active" window. But that's a bit misleading. The
Window-Eyes windows act somewhat like program windows and child windows
in a program. While you always have to have the main program window,
which is nothing more than a frame, everything within it is a child
window of that window. That is unless you're a Mozilla developer and put
up a window frame and then make all of its children direct children of
the desktop. They need serious long-term psychiatric therapy. But I
digress. In Window-Eyes the normal ancestry used by sane developers
works with precedence.

Window 0 has the highest precedence. So in effect it is the parent
window. for example, if you made window 0 silent then it's not going to
matter what you do with the other 99 windows because their precedence is
lower than that of window 0.

Therefore, typically window 0 is the active window, neutral, and uses
auto-determined highlighting. Generally this will serve you best for
normal usage of the program. Then you can move up and configure, for
example, window 1 to always speak the text you want that's in a
particular color. That window doesn't have to be active if it's a speak
window. Alternatively you can make it a neutral window and assign a hot
key to it so you can have it speak when you want. If you do assign a hot
key make sure to give it program scope.

How you handle the text in a particular color depends on how you want it
to work and how much information you can pin down about it. If you have
mouse access you can use it to set the window coordinates using the hot
keys. You can set the foreground/background and highlight color in the
window properties to "accept mouse." But these dialogs will only appear
if you uncheck match any foreground and background colors and
auto-determine highlight color. Then just tab through the manual options
until you come to the "Accept mouse" button.

Then there's the approach of using hyperactive windows, which I'll
simply leave at that for the moment.

When you're done whipping up windows don't forget to set the main window
back to 0 and save the set file.

Hth,
Tom

and that A I Squared can not guarantee they will work.

When I asked about an alternative to User Windows, I was told I could

Perhaps not many used the User Window feature, but I sure did. And I
found being able to read selected parts of a screen, or to auto read
parts of a screen to be quite valuable, and I used these features all

Not everyone is a Script writer, and after listening to several of
Chip's lessons on writing Scripts, Grumpy Dave is not going to be writing
any scripts any time soon.

Is there any alternative to the User Window feature? Other than writing
a script?

Also, the last time I looked at NVDA, which might have been a year or

I use several programs where I only wish to read a small part of the

Thanks for any help, or reply,

Oh, and by not Supporting User Windows is a Step Backwards, at least in
my mind. If a feature is going to be removed, then there should be
something to replace it with that does a better job. Scripting might be
a better solution, but not for the typical Window Eyes user.

Hello,

I am curious about something. I have thought for a while now that
accessibility is either going backwards, or it is not keeping up with the
new changes coming in modern apps and programs.

This isn't meant to be a slam at A I Squared, but I am wondering if this is
just my own misguided and inaccurate perception, or have any of the rest of
you noticed the same steps backwards, as I think I have.

At a time when it appears as if accessibility is increasing, , when I
examine the topic closer, there are just more choices today, than in days
past. There is multiple versions of MS Windows, and now Apple has put
Access in their OS. The Iphone and other Smart phones have access, and the
same for Tablets. Even Lenox I've been told now has some support for
reading its screens.

We have more Gadgets that have some Speech, but so far, the level of access
seems shallow. As long as you only use the basics of any given program, or
OS, you might be OK. But if you need to get in a make some deeper changes,
you might be hard pressed to make any such changes because you find the
access into those areas is just not there.

I worked at a Computer Software company for a long time, and I was let go
when Cash flow was slowing up. If I had to go back and work there today, I
doubt if I could do so, because I do not have the access I once had. They
have changed the Phones system, and they are using software that I doubt if
any screen reader would read enough of it to make it usable by someone
blind.

They now have three Databases, and one is an On-Line Database, and I doubt
if I could work fast enough to do my old job.

Even before, I had to memorize a ton of stuff, and today, I would need to
memorize a lot more than before.

So are those of us who are Blind experiencing less access these days than
say we did 10 or 15 years ago?

I would say we have less, even though we have more choices today, the access
is shallower.

Am I just a guy that is out of touch, or is what I think I see, an
observation others have noticed as well?

And don't worry about hurting my feelings. I hope I am wrong in my
assessment.

Grumpy Dave

P.S. And I may not be seeing Steps Backwards, but just that changes are
taking place so fast, that Screen reader builders can not keep up with these
changes?

Or is it a bit of both.

Really discouraging.

I've always used the Window-Eyes Insert-S, select Dropbox, and Alt-R to
open the context menu. However it is a little strange in that when I do
so it says "press enter to open the Dropbox menu." But obviously it's
not a big deal.

Tom

Re: An alternative for User Windows?

2016-03-18 Thread Jonathan Cohn via Talk
Hello,

I have struggled with User windows, since I learned Window-Eyes scripting at
the same time I learned Window-Eyes.

When working with some programs, I find there is text in a specific color that
should be indicated to the user at presentation and that the WindowClips
functionality of Window-Eyes works, it seems a bit overkill.

Can you tell me how to have all maroon text in a specific application speak
using User-Windows. I have read the documentation on UserWIndows a couple of
times, but can’t figure out if more than one can be active, how to set a
highlight color for one, and other likely controls.

Best wishes,

Jonathan

Re: Losing Touch, or do I still have it?

2016-03-18 Thread Tom Fairhurst via Talk

To be honest, I have pondered this myself

-Original Message-

Subject: Losing Touch, or do I still have it?
