RE: Combo boxes on the BARD site
I have had this happen on the magazine combo in Windows 7 and IE 11. Therefore, I don't think this is a Windows 8 or 10 problem. However for some reason, these steps don't always accomplish the desired results. Apparently, judging by a number of posts about this issue since yesterday afternoon, this has been the experience of other veteran users of Window-Eyes as well, so I don't think it fair to assume that we are all just dunces that just can't follow instructions. Man, I can't believe I'm being this snarky, but I really don't know of any other way to react to the assumption that this has to be the fault of the user. This feature is simply not apparently one of the more stable features of Window-Eyes. It may work just fine on the same page tonight, then on this very night I can go to another page on a different site entirely which contains the same style of combo box, and the feature may not work at all. I really don't wish to blame WE for this issue, if indeed the blame would be more properly placed upon Windows 10, but please don't assume that just because I do the correct thing automatically means that I will get the desired results, maybe I will, or maybe I wont. I think I've stated the case just about as clearly as it can be stated by me this evening at least. As I've said before, these combo boxes aren't inaccessible, I can press the desired letter and then tab to the go button and get where I wish to go, but I am not likely to be able to simply press enter and get right to that go button, or pass go and get the listing I am looking for. FW: Combo boxes on the BARD site
Larry, I'd like to re-assert that I am really behind the WE learning curve and for all I knew, Alt-down arrow may have been a new app keystroke. I am sorry if I came off as patronizing. Any time I respond to the list members' issues, I always include my keystrokes and the steps I took, along with the results. I always respond assuming a Window-Eyes newbie is reading our correspondence and might not know what we're talking about. Anyway, I mentioned the BARD web page specifically because the NLS pages have been very accessible for me personally. Now, the LakeCo.IN.gov web page...that's another story. Had to do quite a tap dance to pay my property taxes on line. Good thing they're in charge of enforcing accessibility. . Hope this semi rant helps in your understanding of my situation. It really isn't a show stopper, just an annoyance. I am glad to hear that the author combo box on BARD is working well for you and others when using the correct techniques. The steps you listed in your message follow best practices for interacting with combo boxes. And, I wanted to clarify that these keyboard techniques are not tied directly to Window-Eyes. This keyboard support (i.e. Alt-Down to open, Up/Down or first letter navigation to change selection, Enter to close) is built right into the combo box control and web browser whether you are using a screen reader or not. Holding down Alt while Down Arrowing is not the correct technique for navigating through the options in a combo box and is not a Window-Eyes feature. I don't remember ever having an issue on the BARD web site. I just went there and logged in and did this. Pressed the letter C to jump to the author's last name combo box. Pressed enter to exit browse mode. Pressed and released Alt-down arrow to expand the combo box. Note: At this point, Window-Eyes announced that the control had expanded and called the control a list view. Arrowed down--in this case--to the letter M. Note: Window-Eyes spoke each letter as it was highlighted. Pressed Enter to close the combo box-come-list view. Note: Window-Eyes voiced that the control was closed. I forget exactly what WE said. Tabbed to the go button and pressed spacebar. In your previous posts, it sounded like you are holding the alt key down while arrowing. It's been a while since I've read the WE manual. Is this a new Window-Eyes feature? I forgot to check whether that key combination works; fireworks and a neighbor trying to get his toddler son to sleep kept me up kinda late. . Re: Combo boxes on the BARD site
Larry, The intention of my last email was two fold: 1. Confirm that Lou provided the correct techniques for interacting with combo boxes 2. Clarify that Alt-Down is not the correct technique for navigating choices in a combo box In your defense, there is a known issue in Window-Eyes related to combo boxes. This issue is not consistent but happens enough to be a pretty big annoyance. I regret not presenting this information before going on my rant about proper techniques. If you were in any way offended by my recent correspondence, I sincerely apologize.
