Virtual View usefulness
Hi listers: Just a message to describe one use I found for the Virtual View app. I like to tinker with different configurations, but, don't want to re-install Windows or the like just to try something different. So, I decided to use virtual machines instead. I use VMWare Workstation Player to install the OS, since there is an easy-install option to take much of the work of installing out of the prodcess. However, this wasn't an option for Windows 10, at least, not yet. This meant I had to basically boot up the machine as if I were installing a new Operating System on it. Since this is difficult without sighted assistance, I had avoided it. Suddenly, it hit me. Virtual View can do an OCR of the screen! So, I booted up, using the iso of Windows 10 created from the Media Creation Tool. The system went into Windows setup, and started asking me the questions needed for installation. Most of this can be done simply by pressing Enter, with a few exceptions. The Virtual View app was able to ocr the setup screens, and, from previous experience, and, a little guesswork, I was able to successfully install Windows 10, up to the point where Narrator could take over. Great job on the Virtual View app! Thanks very much! ___ Any views or opinions presented in this email are solely those of the author and do not necessarily represent those of Ai Squared. RE: Windows Software, WE and Updates And Upgrades
Hi Rod, I followed your below directions and though my system did updates the only updates I got were for Windows Defender. According to my computer I am using Windows 10 Home edition 1511 so I guess do not have the 1607 version as of yet. My spouse has the same system I do but he found how to manually download 1607 and he got a message saying this update is not applicable to your computer. So we are trying to figure out what is happening. My computer is a Lenova all in one that I purchased a year ago before windows 10 was released. It had windows 8.1 and I downloaded windows 10 about two months ago. But now I can not get the anniversary edition. I am using the most current version of Window Eyes with all updates also. So should I just wait until Windows does the update on their own or do you think I have a problem and that is why I am not getting windows 10 version 1607. Dave -Original Message- From: Talk [mailto:talk-bounces+dwc63=comcast@lists.window-eyes.com] On Behalf Of Rod Hutton via Talk Sent: Monday, August 15, 2016 9:03 PM To: 'Rick Thomas'; 'Window-Eyes Discussion List' Subject: RE: Windows Software, WE and Updates And Upgrades Hi Rick, If you type update in the search edit box in the Start menu, Check for Updates will appear. If you press Enter on this, you'll be taken to the Windows Update dialog. If you tab to the Check for updates button and Press it, you'll activate the manual download of available updates. Once downloads are available, tabbing to the Install button will actually install them, and you'll be asked to restart your system when installed. Now, if you don't manually install updates, this will normally be done automatically if you leave your system on overnight. I manually installed updates on my Windows 10 Pro virtual machine twice over the last week, the last time being today. Now, even though the Windows Update dialog continues to report that my Windows is up to date, the current build of my Windows version is still 1511. I'm starting to be convinced that the anniversary update is either only for Windows 10 Home, or it will be rolled out to Pro later. Perhaps Home users are the guinea pigs while the advanced Pro users remain happy go lucky with their stable 1511 build. I have received the automatic updates like for windows defender loaded automatically. I am wondering if I have not registered my software correctly or something and don't know what I don't know so cant even check things out. Also, WE does not work correctly when searching for features in the start box. I hit enter to open it, type something then have to hit the down arrow key, tab out and back in to read every entry, not very good and not sure if this is normal WindowEyes behavior. There are other things I am noticing but these 2 are a good starting point to start trying to figure things out, learn what I need to and or request fixes as I move through trying to figure out what is going on. I run a Dell Desktop Optiplex, windows 10 pro and the latest WE. My Outlook in the start list and on the desktop reads as Outlook2013 but in the properties window the executable is Outlook15 so I don't have a clue as to what version of Outlook is on my machine and cant find it anyplace in the Outlook ribbon thingy. RE: bell
In the old days, many characters in the lower ranges performed functions rather than bweing displayed. For example, there was a control character that caused a bell to ring on old teletype machines. I believe it was CONTROL-G. This character was used in computers to sometimes sound a beep. I believe this character is used to define the boundary between cells in tables particularly in Microsoft products. You will here "Bell" particularly if you are using the LEFT and RIGHT ARROW keys to move through tables, but you may sometimes hear this at other times depending upon other settings. Re: bell
I have observed this behavior, also, and it has nothing to do with E-mail. It has to do with tables. I haven't noticed it yet with the newest build of Window-Eyes, but Ihave observed it previously, especially with MS Word 2010 tables. -Original Message- From: Rod Hutton via Talk Sent: Sunday, August 28, 2016 5:40 AM To: Rod Hutton ; 'Window-Eyes Discussion List' Subject: RE: bell Hi Alison, Forgive me, I meant you could add the sender, not the recipient, to your junk sender's list. One other thing if you reply to some one is there a way to leave the original message there, if you forward a message the original message stays there. Many thanks for any help. Isn't bell some kind of unicode character that is used in some word tables? I think I have seen this before in some documents, although I can't rmemeber exactly where. RE: older version of Window-Eyes and XP
Hi Carol, I'm not quite sure how the keystrokes you summarized start Window-Eyes. However, as has been mentioned in another reply, it would simply be a matter of ensuring you have the proper startup option under General, Startup options. My guess is that he installed XP Pro, which tends to be rather stickly about permissions. The key, however, is to ensure he sets it to come up for all users at the login screen, as well as all users after login. The dialog tends to be a little confusing here, but, if yu study it carefully, you can get it set up properly. The computer does not come up talking. The only way he can get speech, after everything is loaded, is to press control-backslash, alt, y, enter and then WE starts speaking. He would like to know if he has fogotten a step somewhere. He still has the same hardware and everything else. Thanks for any assistance.
