Re: Braille Users, a bit off-topic

2019-11-10 Thread Natalie via Talk
I've never heard that you use all 8 fingers to read braille. They just
have to come along as you read.  I find that my left index finger is my
main reading finger although I'm trying to train my right one, too.  It
reads but very slowly and usually takes care of the ends of lines.  My
left middle finger will work in an emergency.  With the Optacon it's the
left index and possibly the middle would do, again in an emergency.

I know this is a bit off-topic, yet been wondering and wanted to hear
people's opinion on the matter. it seems this somehow have been
discussed before, still, what do you think.

As any Braille user will know, we are supposed to use 8 fingers for
reading fast and effeciently. That is, the fingers on both hands, except
our thumbs. True enough, thumbs ar on the page, but I am not aware if
anyone would claim that they really read with their thumbs. When
discussing Braille reading back in time, my impression is that though we
use 8 fingers on the page, seemingly particularly ONE finger stands out
to be the number-one for reading. That finger is the one the user will
prefer, should he ever need to read something with only one finger. And
you often do want to do one-finger-reading. Whenever you are to find a
volume in your bookshelf, or you are to read the Braille tag telling the
color of your cloghing, or any other narrow and tight places. Try
searching for the page number in a book, using 8 fingers. Smile.

My big wondering here, could be three-fold - at least. First of all, is
this the case, that you have one "main finger" for reading Braille?
Secondly, if so, say you are a right-handed person, is your prefered
finger then on your left or right hand; and consequently same question
for left-handed people. Number three, which finger is your prefered one?
Will it be your Index-finger, Middle-finger or does your preference sit
with any of the others? Even, we could be tempted to ask if people find
the same finger being their main "seeing" finger, whenever you are to
explore your way on any surface, or perform daily tasks around the
house, office or workshop.

Those who happen to be users of the no-longer manufactured reading
equipment named Optacon, would be using mainly one finger, due to the
very shape of the Optacon itself. And though it might be nice to know
alternative on that equipment, my question widens out for Braille users
in general, due to that being a more representative group.

For one, I find that I have one finger, that is of special good service.
Whether it comes to Braille, or simply just "seeing" what I am doing
when working, that one finger is my top preference. Should I - for any
reasons - find that the finger is out of business for a day or two,
braille reading as well as many daily living tasks, become somehow more
challenging. And I could think of people suffering from Diabetes - who
have to punch their finger tips seveeral times a day - probably they
prefer to leave their prefered-finger untouched by any puncher.

Not to disturb you all in making up your own mind, for now I will leave
it untold which finger I personal find most useful. If anyone feels like
sharing their experience, or know of any study that has been dealing
with the matter, it would be nice to hear your feedback. Otherwise,
maybe this message might just have made you aware of something of lesser
interest, yet quite puzzling.

Sorry, to those who find it too much off-topic.

Just to let you know, I have Windows 7 and have the same error report

Subject: Windows 10 1903 Storage Settings can break Window-Eyes

Hi everyone,

I want to alert you to a new feature in Windows 10 1903 which caused me a great
deal of trouble with Window-Eyes until I found the problem and corrected it.
There is a new feature in Windows 10 1903 called Storage Sense which you can
learn about here:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/12425/windows-10-free-up-drive-space
The feature is intended to make Windows run better by automatically freeing up
disk space by removing files which Windows decides are no longer necessary.
Window-Eyes is installed in a folder which is typically reserved for temporary
files, i.e., within the AppData folder for the current user account.
By default, Windows 10 is configured to remove temporary files, and so
Window-Eyes can easily be broken by Windows 10.
Now, this is usually not a problem on drives which have sufficient available
space.
However, on one of my virtual machines, Windows 10 is installed on a 60 GB
virtual hard drive.
Therefore, on this machine, Windows 10 decided to perform some disk cleanup and
so Window-Eyes threw an error whenever I ran it.
Interestingly, I found the cause of my problem using Narrator, with which I was
able to read notifications from Windows indicating that I had deleted files,
and that I had the option of restoring them.
I thought that I was going crazy since I did not remember deleting any files.
Remembering past posts on this list from users like Netbat who noted how files
like wineyes.ini can be corrupted, I wondered whether any of my Window-Eyes
files were being corrupted or deleted.
Anyway, I decided to choose the restore files option from the Windows
notification, and, after a reboot, Window-Eyes came back to life.
However, this happy state of affairs didn't last long, since, within a short
period of time, a few minutes in fact, when I restarted Window-Eyes, it threw
an error again.
I'm trying to think back to how I found out that Windows has a quite aggressive
disk space manager built into its most recent version, but I eventually did.
One of the features of Windows I have been researching recently is OneDrive,
which has been evolving quite remarkably, and it, too, has a feature, called
Files on demand, which is an attempt to deal with the storage space limitations
of newer Windows devices.
The page link I have provided above also has a link to learn about OneDrive.
While Microsoft is certainly doing a lot of work to add features to its
software, you really have to study these settings carefully in order to benefit
from them and avoid problems.
Anyway, at this point I want to suggest that you go into your Windows settings,
search for Storage Sense, and turn off this feature until you have time to
consider its implications for your own system, or at least adjust the settings
in order to prevent Windows making decisions which you don't want.
I hope this helps you all in your travels. Smile.

Good luck,

Rod

Re: Error Reporting

It's not your system.

On 7/16/2019 10:53 PM, David via Talk wrote:

Interesting.

Two days ago, my Window-Eyes had a crash, and I had to do a cold-boot of
the system. After that, the error report message comes up every time I
start Window-eyes. I thought it was only my system, and had in mind to
ask the list if there is a way to get rid of the whole thing. Been
searching through the menus, hoping for a way to turn error reporting
off, but did see nothing.

and here, you are several others, who experience the report message
popping up on you. Well, at least it seems it might not be my system.
Smiles.

May I ask if you guys have had some of the apps crash on you as well?
See on my system, a couple of apps seem to crash every time I load
WinEyes. This has been going on for a couple of weeks, so a bit longer
than the Error Report issue, but just wonder if there is some kind of
connection. Basically, I do not need the apps, so might have to simply
just turn them off, and perhaps you are not running them, hence they
would not crash on you. Still just wanted to know. The apps in question
is the Uninstall App, developed by Bruce; and also the app that let us
change profile with a hotkey, its name being some foreign language, but
it something like Profilu. Sorry, I don't have it in front of me right
now, that's why memory has to serve.

For your info, I have scanned my computer with AntiVirus, Anti-Malware
programs, and even ran a Registry cleanup with CCleaner. Once I had the
WEDiag app installed yesterday, I let it rebuild the Accessibility
Libraries, being one of the features it offered. I had hope that any of
this took care of the Error Report, but it doesn't seem to have any
positive effect.

I did try to hit Send, next time I simply just closed the Error Report
Message. The rest of the times it's been on my screen, I pressed the
Delete button of the dialog, hoping it would remove the thing from my
computer. But it sure seems it generates new reports every startup.
Happens even if you close WinEyes with Ctrl-Insert-F4, and then restart
the screen reader - a new Error Report comes up.

Probably you are right, it might have to do with late updates of the
general system. By the way, Yes, I do run Win7Pro 64Bit. Not sure if
that is the only kind of systems affected. Who knows, maybe this is the
signal that WinEyes is giving its last breath. Win7 support is obviously
going to be discontinued in 6 months from now, so could it be something
there?

Re: Latest Thunderbird

This happens to me, too, but more with Reply.  Can't proofread my

Updated a few days ago. If I want to reply I usually open a new message.

Everything has worked fine here, with Thunderbird and WE9.54.

After updating Thunderbird, I have done a real restart of my computer,
as I know this usually is necessary when updating things.

Now I can navigate the lists of mails in TB, and opening them, I can
read the content just fine.

But whenever I try to write a message, WE has big trouble. It echoes
well enough my typing, and if I use the backspace I will be told what
character is being deleted. But try using the Arrow-keys, to navigate
what you are writing; it simply does not work. If you Shift-Tab back to
edit the subject line, WE is silent as to what is in the subject field.
Tabbing back to the main body of the posting, all WE will say, is

      About:Blank.

Should you decide to try turning on Browse mode, WE lets you do so, and
then just dings at any keystroke - even the Tab-key. And just forget to
turn off browse mode again, you are told that Browse mode is not available.

Listers,

Is this the end for newer versions of the mailing program - just as well
as we have seen with the newest versions of the Firefox browser? If so,
is there any place to download the latest working version of
Thunderbird? Or, is it my computer that is all mixed up? Anyone else
seeing these behaviors?

I managed to write - and edit my postings - by help of NVDA. So
apparently, that screen reader keeps up with Mozilla's ever ongoing
eagerness of changing layout. Have not yet tried Jaws, so don't know if
any of the above will apply.

thanks for any feaedback.

Hi Ted,

To be clear, then, as Vic replied, use the Insert-arrows to navigate
tables.
This is because there Is no need to go out of and into table mode in
the newest versions of Window-Eyes.

Yet, there is still the ability to navigate to them and within them.
Keep in mind, however, that for tables within Adobe Acrobat Reader,
you must still go into and out of tables, while internal navigation is
identical.

like. Is there a way to read messages as unthreaded. Jaws doesn't
seem to read the titles unless threaded. Hoping there is a setting
to be changed.

I like the way Window-eyes works with Thunderbird much better,
hoping this issue in jaws will be fixed.

Thanks,

Brenda

the day, you didn't have to learn an entirely new conceptual layout just
to get long distance service. If Dan and Doug simply wanted to retire
from the accessibility market, they could have sold the company to an
enterprising software developer with an interest in the blind

from future development. That doesn't seem sensible, and I can't imagine
how much VFO could have offered GWMicro to take its code off the market.

couple right now. I rthought gwmicro had some tutorials on thunderbird
but I only found one that was some helpful but not at all in depth.
One question is how to get to the in box. Once in a while it will
default to the in box when I start it, but most of the time I have to
keep trying to find it. I eventually get to it, but by the time I
have done so many things that I don't know how I did it.Thanks
for any help. This is so different from Eudora.

Re: WLM vs Thunderbird

2015-06-15 Thread Natalie via Talk
I had WLM for a while but didn't like it. Now have Thunderbird and
after a few fixes it works just fine. People say Outlook is really the
best but like my Thunderbird just fine.

I have been having issues with my copy of WLM so I am currently forced to go to

I download Thunderbird instead of trying to repair or reinstall WLM. Do WE and
Thunderbird work well together? Is Thunderbird as easy to use as WLM? You can
email me off list so as not to clutter the board, thanks.

Re: Latest WE with Brailliant 40 cell display

2015-06-02 Thread Natalie via Talk
If I'm reading your message correctly, even in traditional paper braille
you'll find empty lines and one-word lines. It's a waste of paper and
patience, but I have a feeling this might be mirrored or duplicated when
you're using a display. Just a suggestion.

Hi, Does anyone know how I can stop the Brailliant 40 cell from periodically
leaving empty cells? This usually happens at the end of a line of print, there
maybe 2 full displays lengths of text, then a couple of cells and nothing else.
In order to go to the next line of text I have to pan right with the middle
button at the right end of the display.

Is there any way of getting rid of these blank cells and having the text
continue until a paragraph is reached, when I'm happy for a blank line of the
display?

I'm feeling pretty tired, does anyone understand what I'm trying to ask?
(smile). Is there a setting in the WE control panel, Braille that will change
this behaviour?
