Chip anything you would recommend in the dell line up currently that would bea
good choice. I have been looking at the xps 13 as well as the 15 model with 256
GB ssd Quad core I 7 with 2.6 Ghz and 16 GB of ram with windows 10 pro. What
do you think is this a good configuration. Iplan on replacing my 4 year old
dell laptop either this year or next.

I'm running two machines with windows 10. A dell inspiron laptop on windows 10
pro and a toshiba satellite on windows 10. So far so good. I am just hoping
that edge will become more usable to us down the road. I will patiently wait
for the access tech companies to adopt that.So far so good with the windows 10
experience with window eyes. I don’t experience any of the issues that most
have been complaining about with windows 10 and window eyes 9.2.

Hi Bob and Robin,

I bought a Dell Latitude E6530 a couple of years ago, mainly for all the
reasons Robin just listed. It's not "off the shelf" as hers is, but was
customized, ordered via their "business" computers section.

I don't know if this model is still available, but you might try the same
process, and tell the human you speak with your requirements (such as full
keyboard). I have been extremely happy with this laptop, which has performed
in all ways as well as any desktop, but weights under 5 pounds, and has a
bettery life (with the extended battery) of 10 to 12 hours. It has a very
large amount of ram buffering the conventional drive (called some sort of
hybrid, as it has a lot of storage like a conventional hd, but is fast like a
SSD).

I have more info at home, collected every time someone recommended a laptop;
I'll see if I can find it and shoot it to you Bob.

Dell also offered a docking station which I bought ... in my opinion much
better than the alternative technology called a "port replicator"; the docking
station just lets you sit the laptop down into it, and it has its own set of
audio and video connectors, usb connectors, power supply (larger, for a faster
charge of your battery), and you don't have to fiddle around with connecting
and disconnecting everything as you do with port replicators. Docking stations
are relatively rare, and again usually only sold to the business crowd.

If you can't find anything at Dell which you like, my next recommendation is to
go through the business group at Lenovo (formerly the IBM thinkpad line); they
have a lot of business oriented equipment. Business oriented pcs also usually
come with Windows which is just bare Windows, and no crapware added on (another
bonus). Also, buying a customized laptop like this isn't the cheapest, but you
do get exactly what you want (in my case, I got a lot of extras like SD card
readers, a good DVD RW device, and a relatively small screen (which wasn't
important to me and made things lighter). You can also pay for exactly as much
processor as you can afford, and usually can specify the more expensive (but
faster) Intel version of power saving CPUs rather than the AMD line which are
often placed into cheaper laptops to keep costs down.

Good luck,

Chip

Nope ... embarassing but when I checked, it is a Dell Latitude E6530, and there
just isn't anything I don't like about it. It is one of the 5 pound laptops,
in my opinion just the right size so that you can carry enough keyboard battery
and processor, but some people may want one of the ultra-light ones which
weigh-in at around 2 pounds or so. These are highly portable, but their
keyboards are quite difficult to adjust to I think.

I cannot find my collected notes on notebooks, so I searched through older
Window-Eyes discussions, but only came up with one really usefully review so
far, which I am pasting below.

I just got a Lenovo idea pad flex 15 notebook, and I really like it. It is
in the $500 to $600 range, depending on where you get it. This laptop not
only has a 500 GB hard drive in it, but also has a 8 GB solid state drive to
boost speed, and it really does help performance. I had a similarly
equipped hP and this one outperforms it 2 to one, and seems to be much more
stable. The HP had other problems as well, that is why I did an exchange.
They are supposed to be well built laptops too.

Bottom line, I really like mine, and I have Window Eyes, Jaws and NVDA on
it, and WE works flawlessly even with my braille pen. Hope this helps and
good luck on the laptop selection.

You can also get the referabs from dell small and business. I have gotten a few
good dell pcs that way. That way I can get the high end system without having
to pay the high end price usually these pcs are discounted by 30 to 50 % and
have a 1-3 year service contract with them and very good high grade small and
business specs . That's what I do buy what I can afford and not follow the pc

and disconnecting everything as you do with port replicators.

Good luck,

I have a newer Toshiba S75 that I got from Costco. I picked it out largely
based on the keyboard. I wanted a separate number pad and so many of the
keyboards I felt in various stores had all the keys squished together so that I
couldn't quickly distinguish the arrow keys and function keys. I know I could
have used an external keyboard, but having have this defeats the purpose for me
of the laptop. The only annoyance I have with the Toshiba, and I heard this is
not unique to this brand is that the Function keys do what there were designed
to do straight away, meaning pressing say F3 and F4 changges screen brightness.
So, in order to use a function key with Window Eyes or do do things like
switch window panes or close a program, you have to hit the FN key and the
function key. I really dislike this, but haven't found a setting to completely
turn it off and back to how it used to work in prior laptops. My HP laptop at
work still functions the way I would expect with function keys.

Sorry Bob, I think I got the model wrong; I believe it was a Dell Inspiron I
bought two or perhaps 3 years ago.

It has a very
large amount of ram buffering the conventional drive (called some sort of
hybrid, as it has a lot of storage like a conventional hd, but is fast like a
SSD).

I have more info at home, collected every time someone recommended a laptop;

When we bought our HP Pavilion laptop, we had Best Buy's Geek Squad change this
behavior in the bios so that the function keys behave as expected.

I would not recommend trying this yourself unless you really, really, really,
really know what you are doing. My husband let the professionals do it.

Okay, if I am buying a new laptop, what question should I ask about the
function keys to make sure they will work the way I want them to? I asked a
lot of questions, the other day, but this is something I didn't ask. So,
please help me, and if possible, maybe give me brands or models to steer
away from. Pam.

My Dell desktop bit the dust so I got a deal on a nice Lenovo laptop, an
2ghZ AMD quad Core for around $300. Yes, it it does featue a complete
keyboard which is somewhat crowded but I am getting more used to it. AMD
Quad 2GHZ, 6GB of memory which I upped to 8, and 500GB HD which is a
non-issue for me since I have two WD Passports. I love this thing.

Some of Lenovo's software isn't very accessible, but since all drivers are
shipped on the D drive, Lenovo's software really isn't essential. I just
installed Windows 10 with no major problems.

Re: I want Opinions On New Lap Top

2015-08-06 Thread Sunshine via Talk
there should be a way to turn this off that you can use the function
keys the way they were ment to be used.
I have a lenovothinkpad and when i do a key combo i can turn off the fn
key so i can use the function keys correctly and yes the lenovo thinkpad
i have is a full sized keyboard as well.

not unique to this brand is that the Function keys do what there were designed
to do straight away, meaning pressing say F3 and F4 changges screen brightness.

The reason Mayberry was so peaceful and quiet was because nobody was married.
Andy, Aunt Bea, Barney, Floyd, Howard, Goober, Gomer, Sam, Earnest T Bass,
Helen, Thelma Lou, Clara, and of course Opie, all single.
The only married person was Otis, and he stayed drunk.
