And we should hold them accountable, most definitely.
But they have been making changes, and I have been monitoring those changes
quite closely. It's part of my job description.

Marvin,

I agree and some people need to calm down big time. Darrell Bowles (excuse

Please take the general discussion and fear mongering off this list.

Subject: RE: Windows 10 accessibility

This is not in any way meant as a criticism, but as has already been pointed
out, I think people's fear of Windows 10 is based on misinformation.
There's so much of that floating around, despite resources on Bookshare and
Google. There are many people on this List who are successfully, and
happily, using Windows 10. It's not as if Microsoft is making us pay for
the upgrade! It's free for Heaven's sake! IE11, Firefox and Chrome are
still there, so access to the internet will stay the same, as will word
processors and e-mail programs. "My Computer" or "Computer" is now called
"This PC". So? There are so many options that allow a person to configure
settings, the Start screen and menu, the Search box, the Taskbar, This PC...
The Desktop is still there. Privacy settings and Cortana can be turned off,
indeed, Cortana is not available with all the privacy settings turned off so
that Microsoft cannot get its eyes, ears and fingers into the computer..
I had sighted help for the actual upgrade, and I did ask my tech to take off
all the stuff on the right side of the Start screen, only because he could
do it far faster with the mouse than I could with the keyboard. When I
called the Microsoft Disability Desk with a question about something, the
guy commented that my screen looked exactly like Windows 7, which is how I
want it. If I have to tab or arrow around five times to get to something on
the right side of the screen, that's not an efficient use of my time. Get
it off my screen! Smile.
If someone does not know where something is, or what it's called precisely,
the Search box is a wonderful resource.
Google is still my Home Page, and Google is still my Search Engine. And the
Search box on the Start Menu in Windows 10 can be set to exclude the
internet, so do I care if Microsoft uses Bing to bring up internet results.
If I want the Internet, I go to my Google Home Page and ask Google. Smile.
A sighted person may want Cortana, but Window-Eyes already talks to me!
Edge is not yet accessible, but as someone pointed out, there are three
other Browsers to choose from.
JMO. Smile.

Dennis,

You can defer updates on Windows 10 Pro.
You can disable the search box.
I've yet to hear of anyone actually having a program uninstalled by
Microsoft. And they only do it for pirated programs, which pirates
deserve. But yes, in principle I agree with you. Then again, I was
sickened by Apple's stance on privacy and refusing not to open a dead
terrorist's phone, which he did not even own. So principles have their
limitations.
Virtually all of the privacy issues can be disabled.

I'm not a fan of what Microsoft has done. But in many ways they're
really only catching up with Apple, Google, and other providers who
track every move we make, scan our email, and so on. Conversely, Windows
10 is more secure and fine-tuned for new processors, solid state drives,
etc.

Regards,
Tom

If someone does not know where something is, or what it's called precisely,
the Search box is a wonderful resource.
Google is still my Home Page, and Google is still my Search Engine. And the

If I want the Internet, I go to my Google Home Page and ask Google. Smile.

Microsoft was stopped *in court* many years ago from forcing its browser on
us. So it's not going to happen no matter what the fear mongers say.

RE: Windows 10 accessibility

2016-05-12 Thread Rebecca Lineberger via Talk
Smile.

who makes the operating system? seems to me we are definitely going to
have to go with their decisions in any case, and that is just the way it
is. We can kick and moan, and thrash about and not like it, but that's
just wasting energy. Why not get into a dialogue with them and in that
way, affect what happens instead of being in effect of what happens. :)

i cloned the win8 drive with casper before i installed win10. so no matter what
happened i could restore it with the backup drive.
i'm glad i did. the first time i installed win10 it hosed the computer and it
wouldn't even boot.

the second time there was no problem.
***
you might try useing 64 or 32 bit vista drivers. depending on which version of
win 10 you could use.
i had a 10 year old hp all in one that worked with the vista drivers on windows
7 ,8 and on 10 until i bought a del laser all in one mid last year.
hp only had 64bit vista drivers for it.
even then , once i installed the vista drivers win 10 found new drivers for it.

They're not going to force anyone to use the Edge browser. All they're
doing is making it the only choice if you search from the Cortana search

own products. If it's too much to open whatever browser you want and
whatever search engine you want, which for me is done with one key

They're not going to force anyone to use the Edge browser. All they're
doing is making it the only choice if you search from the Cortana search
box. And why not? Of course they're going to promote the use of their
own products. If it's too much to open whatever browser you want and
whatever search engine you want, which for me is done with one key
stroke, well, maybe it's time to bow out of the computer world. Apple
has probably been doing the same thing for years.

Pam,

This is the problem with articles from forbes, which is the basis upon which
this thread was started. They are notorious among journalists for being
sensationalist, scary, and light on facts.

Go to their web site with an ad blocker active and they won't let you in
unless you turn it off. And of course they promise few ads. Then it's
literally like trying to find your way through a jungle of ads in order to
find bits and pieces of the actual article scattered all over the page
between ads.

So at least for me, none of their material is worth reading. Next week
they'll probably headline that they've discovered a huge conspiracy wherein
Windows 10 was designed by the ultimate geek supremacist race to destroy
humanity as we know it so the geeks can take over the world.
They already have a million Bill Gates clones fascist militia, and well, you
get the picture. smile.

Tom

Indeed. And Windows 7 will be supported until 2020. By that time, I'll need
a new computer and I'll get what OS is out then. In the meantime, I have a
scanner here that won't run under Windows 10 and I'm not replacing it until
it quits.

2016-05-12 Thread Tom Kingston via Talk

Pam,

This is the problem with articles from forbes, which is the basis upon
which this thread was started. They are notorious among journalists for
being sensationalist, scary, and light on facts.

Go to their web site with an ad blocker active and they won't let you in
unless you turn it off. And of course they promise few ads. Then it's
literally like trying to find your way through a jungle of ads in order
to find bits and pieces of the actual article scattered all over the
page between ads.

So at least for me, none of their material is worth reading. Next week
they'll probably headline that they've discovered a huge conspiracy
wherein Windows 10 was designed by the ultimate geek supremacist race to
destroy humanity as we know it so the geeks can take over the world.
They already have a million Bill Gates clones fascist militia, and well,
you get the picture. smile.

They're not going to force anyone to use the Edge browser. All they're
doing is making it the only choice if you search from the Cortana search

own products. If it's too much to open whatever browser you want and
whatever search engine you want, which for me is done with one key

Evan,

I don't know this for sure, but I imagine these days Microsoft is
putting what we call the "stubs" for accessibility in from the
beginning. So they just have to be flushed out later. Like Apple and
everyone else we're always on the bottom of the priority list. That's
just how it is when you're a tiny minority of their customer base. And
while I'm not letting Microsoft off the hook, the Edge browser isn't
exactly critical when we have three other browsers to choose from.

Since we are on the subject of accessibility and web browsers, how will you
solve captchas where am audio challenge is not presented? I haven't heard a
word about this. I guess you can use Fire Fox until Windows 10 forces you to
use the Edge browser. I am not going to Windows 10 until this question has
a firm answer.

I agree. Gone are the days, when Internet explorer 5.5 was the only browser

In windows 10, You can set the default browser you want to use just by
going in to a search box and typing default browser and hitting enter.
The browser that is shown is the one that is the current default. If
you activate that button, your given other browser options and in my
case that includes IE, Firefox, Google Chrome, and Edge. Sometimes
after a Windows 10 update, I'll get a dialogue box asking me if I still
want to use IE and IE stays my default browser unless I want to switch

I agree. Gone are the days, when Internet explorer 5.5 was the only browser out
there. Unfortunately, gone are the days it seems when Internet explorer was
stable. But yes, times have changed and we can either turn with them, or
protesting get spun off.

Re: Windows 10 accessibility

2016-05-11 Thread Tom Kingston via Talk

Regards,
Tom

Yes: intracorporate non-communications.

I listened to a great deal of ACB's Convention last year, where Microsoft
promoted its commitment to accessibility as being directed by its new Chief
Executive, and whilst I think we await outcomes with cautious optimism, this
Edge mistake should not have occurred.

Re: Windows 10 accessibility

2016-05-11 Thread Evan Reese via Talk
Is there some reason they couldn't have built accessibility into the Edge
browser from the beginning? Now they have to bolt it on, which is never as
good.

RE: Windows 10 accessibility

2016-05-11 Thread Sky Mundell via Talk
The same goes here in Canada. Today, I took a trip to our local disability
resource centre here in Victoria and they had Office 2010 on their windows
10 public computers, so I put Window-Eyes on two of them, except the other
second one that I put Window-Eyes on doesn't function as well as it does
because they have MacAfee Virus on it and the other one has security
esentials. The one with security esentials works great on Window-Eyes.

RE: Windows 10 accessibility

2016-05-11 Thread Vaughan Dodd via Talk
I'm expecting Microsoft to be held to account at the two big conventions later
this year. Lots of hand wringing a year ago when MS said "sorry" for not
making Edge accessible - for how long can they stay "sorry?"

Vaughan.

Hello all,

Lots of "dumb" questions on this list about Windows 10 accessibility with
Window-Eyes. You would think, after a quarter century of excellent
support,

all of you would assume the obvious: Of course Window-Eyes will fully
support Windows 10 when it is release to the general public.

It's premature to expect Window-Eyes to be fully functional with Windows
10
and its programs when Microsoft hasn't settled on what they will be when
the

release finally occurs.

Let the folks at AI Square do their jobs in peace; you won't be
disappointed.

Their will be lots of amazing things to come, for Microsoft has
reconfigured

its operations and now has a "vertical integration" strateigy;that is,
Windows 10 will run on multiple platforms with the same user interface and
commands. So, for instance, learn Windows 10 for a PC, then you will know
how to use it on a tablet, laptop, cell phone, etc.

Moreover, Microsoft has announced that it will run Android apps on Windows
10. And, it's expected that Microsoft will place Cartana (Siri's sister)
on

Windows 10 so you can control many functions via voice commands.

Also, supposedly, Microsoft will release windows 10 free of charge to
customers and place Office 2016 on windows 10 for free as well.
