Jim, and others to just display your unread emails in thunder bird go to 
the view menu by doing alt v then down arrow to threads sub menu and 
right arrow now down arrow to unread and enter on it. this should show 
you the unread messages.

Why not just deal with the messages as you read them. i.e.  Delete, move 
or save them elsewhere. This will keep your inbox clear of clutter.


Sooner or later you are going to have to deal with the clutter anyway.
