[OSM-legal-talk] OSM in travel guide
Hi, Just following up on the leaflet discussion. What about using OSM in a travel guide? It will look completely different and have new information added. Sounds like a derivative work as well. What about the new added information that the travel publisher has researched and wants added (hotels, pubs, etc). Does that operate under the same license structure, meaning other people can copy it. The publisher would certainly balk at that as that is seen as their information that they have researched. Ideally for me (the cartographer) the original map data would be copyright under the Creative Commons license and anything I add would not, which would be noted in the book credits at the front of the book. Does that work? I have been reading up as much on OSM for about a year now and must admit to being more confused about the legal issues than I could possibly imagine. Any advice would be much appreciated. I think OSM is an amazing resource and want to use it properly, but am not sure how to do that at the moment. Thanks, Tim ___ legal-talk mailing list legal-talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/legal-talk
[OSM-legal-talk] Is this license acceptable for a source?
Hello everyone, I've contacted my city (Sherbrooke/QC/CAN) about using their map as a source, and was given the following license. (Sorry about the formatting -- pdftohtml and sed only go so far.) I was worried at first about the one year at a time clause, but the license only appears to grant termination rights to the licensee, and not to the city. The All rights reserved may be misleading. They'll be basically weaving all rights: The City hereby grants to the Licensee a non- exclusive, fully paid, royalty-free right and licence to exercise all Intellectual Property Rights in the Data. See? No problem. The same stuff happens with creative commons licenses: the author has (by default) all rights reserved; by applying a CC license, he's waiving some, or all, I.P. rights. For me, it seems like a rough CC-by license. The only peculiar thing is that, when you have to attribute the City, you can't say This data comes from the Ville de Sherbrooke government or Courtesy Ville de Sherbrooke. You *have* to say © Ville blah blah blah, all rights reserved. In essence, it's the same as in a CC-by license. With such a license, you have to keep intact all copyright notices for the Work. Theoretically, John Doe can publish something with a copyright notice and then put a CC-by license on it. The final product would read © John Doe; licensed under CC-by. Moreover, depending on the canadian law, there is an easy workaround for this license: you're explicitly granted all rights over any modifications of the data. In certain jurisdictions, just converting the data to another format is a modification. Do the math. The weekend of the 21/22 June could work for me but not the following weekend. However the 21/22 is the weekend after the London to Brighton ride so I may not be wish to tromp up the hills. One idea would be to do the Lake District again, but further west (e.g. Great Gable, Pillar, Buttermere, High Stile, Scafell Pike, Wasdale, Borrowdale) an area which is still decidedly lacking in OSM; if we can complete that area, a good part of the Lake District would be done. Other ideas would be the Peak District, Snowdonia or the Fort William and Glencoe area of the Scottish Highlands. I'm thinking about setting up a Snowdonia weekend, so anyone interested in that should get in touch with me. I'll make sure it doesn't conflict with any Lakes weekend. I was thinking of a long weekend starting 19 July and the plan would be to camp. Cheers Andy An alternative (and rather different) idea would be a Hampshire mapping week - not as hilly as the other areas, but inspired by the fact that the coverage of Hampshire footpaths in OSM has increased significantly recently - if we can complete, or at least work significantly towards completing, a county that would be a good showcase for OSM countryside mapping. Hi all, I'm going to tag quite some roads in south africa. In a latitude where the wet season makes 40% of the road network non-drivable. Was für ein expliziter Way?
[Talk-GB] UK outdoors mapping event - week of June 23rd
Hello everyone, (cross posted to talk in case anyone from abroad fancies a holiday over here) Following on from last year's successful Lake District mapping week I'd like to float the idea of a follow up this year - I now have a definite week in the early summer when I know I'll be free namely the week beginning June 23rd. An alternative (and rather different) idea would be a Hampshire mapping week - not as hilly as the other areas, but inspired by the fact that the coverage of Hampshire footpaths in OSM has increased significantly recently - if we can complete, or at least work significantly towards completing, a county that would be a good showcase for OSM countryside mapping. Any preferences? Please let me know if you're interested in one or more of the possible locations. Thanks, Nick ___ Talk-GB mailing list Talk-GB@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/talk-gb
