No (I can't enlighten), but when I've spoken with Google's engineers and
managers, this little nugget of information has never arisen. So perhaps the
CTO of Geo at Google hasn't exactly made this widely-known or he was
mistaken about something he heard a colleague say?

Perhaps we could e-mail him directly? Or SteveC could fill us in...

Re: [OSM-talk] Will Google ever use OSM data?

2009-11-05 Thread Richard Fairhurst
I'd seen a vague allusion to this but not actually heard the full
response. Really interesting - Michael Jones of Google explaining why
they don't use OSM data.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iQXDAFJTH6w#t=1m47s

To summarise: the only reason is that Google don't think our licensing
works; they didn't actually want to launch a competitor; if OSM had
"got its legal act in order" they wouldn't have launched Map Maker
against us and would have used our data.

Being generally more disposed to the little guy and pretty sceptical
about Google in particular, I take all of this with a Siberian
saltmine or two.

But what I'm puzzled about is that he says Google were talking to OSM
about licensing for a year. Presumably this was prior to the launch of
Map Maker.

Map Maker was launched in July 2008. I was on the OSMF Board from
summer 2007 to summer 2008, partly as the "legal guy", so would expect
that "year" and some part of my year to have coincided. But I don't
recall any mention of discussions with Google, either within OSMF or
among the wider community. (I may be forgetful, of course.)

Basically, I have no idea what he's going on about.

Can anyone enlighten me?

I do not know which discussion you mean?
According to the wiki voting is still neccessary to approve a new feature.
If there have been any changes to this, they are not documented in the wiki.

+1. Maybe we should set a precedent and move the feature to "approved
features" and put "approved by broad consensus on talk"?

You already have a consensus that no further need for changes is
needed. What more do you want? A pony? A lollipop? A vote? How is
voting once the document has been approved by everyone going to change
anything?

Don't vote. Just start using the tag. Do we really need to revisit
this discussion again so soon?

It would be nice if further votes would be more serious.
If you do not like voting, do not take part in them.
There are people, who do not think that total anarchy is the way to go.

I like the idea and tried it - I fail to disable the layer by default
and the other problem i see is the control adding - i liked the old
OSB way of first having to click an icon at the top before a click
to the map adds a bug - otherwise one accidentally adds bugs or at least
lets the form pop up regularly - a click on the map should never alone
trigger an event - typically clicking on the map means click-hold - pan
double-click zoom - so left click should be reserved for navigation and
not other actions ...

/* Openstreetbugs */
var osb = new OpenLayers.Layer.OpenStreetBugs("OpenStreetBugs", { "visibility":
false });
map.addLayer(osb);

var osbControl = new OpenLayers.Control.OpenStreetBugs(osb);
map.addControl(osbControl);

Thats basically my code i added ... (http://maxspeed.osm.lab.rfc822.org)
