I wonder if there are any ISO standard icons we could reuse? Not going to happen. In OSM everyone is free to do what they want - editor writers, map style writers, application developers. Mappers can invent new tags as they please. Nobody is going to bother applying to some group to give them an "official" icon. Different map styles require different icon styles anyway. (I've heard stories of editors even using different icons for the same thing depending on whether it is in the presets panel or on the map...) Having said that, even though everyone is free to use any icon they want and this will not change, many developers would probably not be unhappy about being able to rely on suggestions. So if you and a group of people would like to draw up a catalogue that matches all common OSM tags to high-quality icons that everyone can use, then I'm sure many would turn to that catalogue for guidance. Re: [OSM-talk] Icons
I joined the design list thinking it would be a place to talk about such things as this and, say, the rendering rules for the osm.org site. http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/design dev also seems to ... touch this territory, and it is active. http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/dev On Thu, Jun 28, 2012 at 8:03 AM, john whelan wrote: > I think that is what is required, a team to first list what the requirements > for icons are then to come up with icons. I think that is what is required, a team to first list what the requirements for icons are then to come up with icons. I wonder if there are any ISO standard icons we could reuse? [OSM-talk] Icons
Could someone or a group come up with a more standard set of icons please? Currently JOSM has its own set, various rendering systems have their own sets but a single recommended set that covered more would be better. Currently skateboard, Softball, T-ball, toboggan are things that don't seem to have an icon. Locally we have splash-pads where young children can run in and out of a spray of water. Very useful in hot weather but not something I'd expect to see in the UK for example, however a standard name and an icon would be helpful.
