Re: [talk-ph] OSM Notes opened for the Yolanda / Haiyan Typhoon and not yet resolved

2015-02-26 Thread Daniel Joseph
I actually reached out to ChrisEspectato (via an OSM account message) on 21
February to ask about the purpose of the notes. If I haven't heard back
after some time I was planning on going through and closing the notes. With
the anonymous notes, reaching out isn't possible. I think it's good to
close some of the notes in the manner you mention.

There are certainly some notes leftover from Yolanda that could be resolved
(because they are no longer relevant or do not contain enough detail). On a
side note, there are also many tags related to the Yolanda response that
could be 'archived' or removed. Unfortunately this sort of cleanup work
tends to be a lot less interesting than adding new details and features to
the map.

All the best,
Dan

There is a discussion today on the general talk list about anonymous OSM

The Yolanda / Haiyan Activation is an example where such info could have
helped if more infos provided and the possibility to interact with the
person adding such note. To revise the OSM Notes and enhance the map, we
can select this layer from openstreetmap.org

Today, after more then a year, this info seems useless and I revises and
resolves/closed some of these notes adding this comment:

*Incomplete infos from this note or comments not related to mapping
objects . More then a year later, no more infos added. I am closing this
 note.*

I also see notes Created by ChrisEspectato
 http://www.openstreetmap.org/user/ChrisEspectato with comments that
seem to refer to an event or trip simply.

[talk-ph] mapping water infrastructure in Leyte

2015-01-13 Thread Daniel Joseph
Hello,

As part of the long term typhoon Haiyan recovery efforts in Leyte the Red
Cross has plans to map water access points (and also possibly other water
distribution infrastructure) in a few areas. The initial purpose is for
better planning of water and sanitation projects. Another goal being to
have the area better mapped for future disaster resilience and response.

I was wondering if people were aware of good tagging conventions used
elsewhere in the Philippines. The wiki page for Philippines mapping
conventions didn't seem to have anything. I was thinking...

## For access points:
+ amenity=water (all access points)
+ amenity=drinking_water (an additional amenity tag for points considered
potable)
+ man_made:water_well, pump=yes, pump:type=hand (for wells with a hand pump)
+ natural=spring (if water is actively flowing naturally from the ground at
the point)
+ access=yes (for public access)
+ I'm not sure about how to tag a public gripo/faucet/spigot connected to a
pipe network?

## For source points:
+ man_made=water_works (for the source of water being distributed through a
pipe network)
+ man_made=reservoir_covered, type=water (for covered water reservoir)

## For pipe network:
+ man_made=pipeline, substance=water
+ location=underground/overground (for buried pipes or pipes visible along
the ground)
+ Is it important to include diameter=* (diameter in millimeters) so that
there is no confusion between the small water pipes being mapped and the
larger pipes more commonly mapped with this tag?
+ Is there a key that could be used with values metal/pvc to give the
material the pipe is made from?

Comments and advice welcome. Salamat.

[OSM-talk] presenting the case for open data to local government?

2013-10-15 Thread Daniel Joseph
Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone had experience conveying to local government all
the reasons for opening up data. The city where I grew up has a clunky GIS
web portal with which you can only view data. A neighboring city will
provide data but their data release form includes the following: The data
is provided solely for the use of the requesting party and may not be made
available to anyone else.

I want to put together a succinct and well-documented argument that I can
send along to a city council member/ mayor/ city manager/ etc.

Anything you're willing to pass along (comments, suggestions, something
you've written up, research, etc) would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Dan
