Lakewalker is missing the actual call to javac in the build.xml, I fixed
it up locally last night so I can commit the fix tonight when I get home
from work. I've also fixed an issue with it that caused the way to not
be closed, so I will commit that fix as well.

The layers parameter in the query string is from OpenLayers itself, it
corresponds to the layers in the layer selector box on the right (for
the main map thats the osma and mapnik, and markers choices). If you go
on informationfreeway.org and look at the permalinks they will be
different due to the different layers and different number of layers.

I try to keep what I'm working on updated within a day or two, currently
I'm finishing off the uploads for the northern edges of Alaska and
starting to move east along the Yukon and Northwest Territories of
Canada, but a lot of this will need to be manually done since the ice
tends to interfere with the PGS data as I've been seeing.

As of tonight Alaska is fully uploaded (the last bit thats going right
now is the panhandle that stretches to the southwest). There aren't too
many breaks in it overall, especially compared to the west coast of BC,
though most of the errors showing there are reversed single way islands
that need to be cleaned up yet, see
http://tile.openstreetmap.nl/coastlines.html?lat=65.56080039181714&lon=-149.433288568253&zoom=4.

And cleaning those up are fairly quick and easy if you want to compile
the newest validator plugin that has the way direction checker code in
it (I haven't uploaded a jar of it yet as I haven't got the detection
for islands that are made up multiple ways done)

I will look at getting Newfoundland done tonight and probably Hudson bay
as well, then start wrapping back south along Labrador and Quebec.

Using the 'Maemo-Mapper' application is the suggested approach versus
using the Nokia supplied "Maps" program (I don't have an N810, only an
N800 currently but I do know that it works fine with the GPS in the
810). Maemo-mapper can export directly to .gpx (through the 'save track'
feature), and as an added bonus defaults to using OSM tiles for the
display.

No working Java support yet, though there are a few people who've been
working towards it slowly from my understanding. And I doubt that JOSM
in its current form would be that usable due to both its resource
requirements and the size of the display.

I'm looking into whether I'll be coming, unfortunately airfare from
Canada is a tad more. Roughly $2000 CAD round trip is what its looking
like right now (via BA, Calgary to Heathrow, then Gatwick to Dublin and
then likely rail from there), though I may be able to score some funding

[OSM-talk] Some interesting numbers from planet.osm

2008-02-10 Thread Jason Reid
I've just put together a small script to generate some statistics from
planet.osm, and its produced a few interesting numbers from the February
6 planet dump:

-There are 5540 ways with 0 nodes in them
-There are 126 ways with 1 node in them
-85% of the ways are have between 2 and 20 nodes (21% have 2 nodes only)
-There are 9666 ways with more than 500 nodes (from a random sampling
most appear to be coastline)
-The longest way has 11270 nodes (a piece of coastline that has since
been split up)

The raw data from the script is available at
http://openstreetmap.ca/statistics/february062008.txt, and a dump of all
the ways that have more then 500 nodes is at
http://openstreetmap.ca/statistics/february062008-longways.txt. The
script itself will be posted to SVN soon.

[OSM-talk] New Lakewalker JOSM plugin release

2008-02-18 Thread Jason Reid
A new version of the lakewalker plugin is now available. This release
features a substantial change to the original plugin that Brent Easton
put together to interface with Daryl Shpak's python script, in that the
actual work of the plugin has been ported to Java and included within
the plugin. This means that the Python script is no longer required, and
should allow easier use. The native Java version also runs substantially
faster, and doesn't get stuck in loops as often as the Python version
did. The python script can still be used (via a second menu item) if you
already have it installed however.

There is one setting change that must be made to use the Java only
version, in that the threshold value must be increased (around 90-110
seems to be suitable) due to differences between what Java and Python
report the intensity of grey being.

You can download the updated plugin via the interface in JOSM, or
directly from
http://svn.openstreetmap.org/applications/editors/josm/dist/Lakewalker.jar

It may be an idea, theres a couple dozen Canadian users that I know of,
though most are fairly inactive. It would be nice to try to get a bit
more interaction between everyone since Canada has relatively sparse
coverage beyond the main highways and a couple larger cities. I'm
starting some initial work on some mapping parties this spring/summer as
well as an initial starting point towards some more interaction.

The January 02, 2008 extract from planet, for a bbox of top=17
right=96.5 bottom=16.5 left=95.5 (the area around the link specified in
the original email) is now posted at http://www.openstreetmap.ca/rangoon/

The January 23rd extract is just about done and will show up in that
directory probably in the next hour or so. From what I can see though
the state that the map is in currently is the same now as it was on Jan
2, so I may also run an extract from further back.

The Oct 31, Jan 02 and Jan 23 are there now, between the last two theres a ~300

about 8kb difference.

It appears that you are using GJC (the GNU java runtime), I'm not sure
if osmosis is fully compatible with it. According to the wikipage it
requires Java 1.6 (aka Java 6) to run.

That is a very good question, seeing as how Geogratis data is
imcompatible with the OSM license, otherwise it would have been imported
already if it was suitable.

The history also doesn't show a user for the intial way, though this
data does NEED to be removed immediately.

Definitely count me in. I'd also be willing to help others from the
Calgary area get down there if they want to go but don't got a way to
get there.

I'm sure we could do a party in or around Calgary, for instance Airdrie
needs a lot of work (only a few roads are done) if there is interest.

Overall it isn't too difficult to setup. Hardest part is just getting
everything installed and working together (as there are a number of
dependencies), but overall if you follow the instructions that are out
there its not too bad.

I've got a partial setup running on openstreetmap.ca (that isn't public
yet), but to answer the other questions it should serve as a baseline.
The system behind that site is an Opteron 246 with a couple gb of ram,
and can re-render all of Canada through Mapnik in under a day. Sweden
shouldn't be anywhere near that long. Overall the slowest part of the
setup is getting the data into postgres to start with. Bandwidth is the
only number that is really unknown, as its going to fluctuate greatly.

I will be there. And fingers crossed the openstreetmap.ca site will have
the Canadianized mapnik layer running on it by then so we can show it off.

If there is enough interest I am also planning on heading up to Airdrie
on Sunday the 21st to see what I can get mapped there, its slowly coming
along but theres probably enough left to do to keep a few people busy
for a while.

Most of my edits in that were coastline imports (mostly the Canadian
coastline and Alaska), probably 95% or more of them at least

I suspect in his case some of the edits probably came from using the
Lakewalker plugin, which by default splits the traces into 250 node
ways. So if the coastline was traced then uploaded then edited and
uploaded again, it wouldn't be hard to quickly add up to a lot of edits.

Heres another, my current school (and place of work): University of Calgary

Virtually all the buildings are at least rough mapped, most pathways and
a good number of the food outlets.
