Re: [Talk-ca] Postal Codes

2014-12-30 Thread Matthew Dance
Hi All,
Please have a look at David Eaves post on how Canada Post is prosecuting a
person for crowdsourcing postal code data:

 Hey all,

I was reading over the previous discussions held here regarding the issue
of obtaining postal codes for use with civic addresses in Canada. I
understand that, unless specific permission is obtained, there is no way to
utilize the information stored in the Canada Post database, even if that
information is manually acquired from the database during a lookup. The use
is restricted to a very limited personal or business application - ie, I
want to send a package and I use the database to get the postal code of the
 address.

It initially appears odd that Canada Post would be very restrictive with
the code data. I understand that they maintain consumer names with the
address data, but the OSM project would not be seeking that connective
data, just the bare address to attach to a civic or business address.
Looking about their site, I eventually encountered this little gem ---
 https://www.canadapost.ca/cpo/mc/business/productsservices/mailing/pcdp.jsf

It would appear that Canada Post sells a data product that is,
effectively, the postal code data attached to a map. It is provided to
businesses for the purposes of datamining, allowing them to hone their
mailings or identify exploitable market areas. The cynic in me figures that
this is the real reason that they won't give OSM the permission to use the
data. Not for protection of the consumer or for privacy, but to make money.
Fair enough - it is technically a business.

Anyway, it would appear that obtaining the information from Canada Post
is, basically, a dead end. Might I suggest an alternative? Why not a
volunteer effort? I can't look up a code and reproduce it on the map, but I
can surely put my own postal code and those of my previous addresses into
the map. That knowledge has nothing to do with looking it up on their
website. I also know the code for my small hometown in Newfoundland as I
lived there for years and the entire town uses the same code. Perhaps there
is a way to gather the information voluntarily from Canadian citizens and
businesses. Basically go around them? For example, a survey on the Reddit
forum for Canada could be asked or something like that. The more we can get
without using the post office, the better. Business websites are easily
some of the best sources - they offer their mail address without any
restriction so that is fair use too.

 Just a thought!

 Adam

[Talk-ca] Introduction: Matt Dance

2014-02-03 Thread Matthew Dance
Hi,
I'm Matt Dance, in Edmonton, and have been doodling a little bit on OSM in
Edmonton, but would not like to up my game. I'm interested in alternative
cartographies, especially in contemporary and Aboriginal mapping as well as
historic maps.

Drop me a line if you share any of these interests, of if there are any
projects I should start contributing to.

Matt

Hi Darren,
I'm in Edmonton and interested in expanding my OSM activities - a bit
further west that you but we might have some overlapping interests.

 Hi All,

I hope that you are off to a great start on your mapping activities for
 2014.

OpenStreetMap is certainly off to a great start. User emacsen wrote a
compelling article today that drove a significant number of new
mappers to OpenStreetMap. That's some great advocacy, right there.
The article is really aimed at folks who are not yet mappers, so not
really the same audience of these lists, as we're already mappers.
but you might enjoy the article anyway. Have a look.

 http://blog.emacsen.net/blog/2014/01/04/why-the-world-needs-openstreetmap/

In 2014 we will see the 10 anniversary / birthday of OpenStreetMap.
What are you going to do to celebrate? We (the local mappers in
Toronto) will host another OpenStreetMap Mapiversary party, details to
be determined, how about your local group?

On that subject, is this the year that you'll start a local mapping
 group in your town?

I've never understood why it is that the German community has groups
of mappers that meet each month, in just about every city, town and
village of size, while in North America those groups are very rare.
It could be that the difference is you. You can start a successful,
self-sustaining local group that meets each month to discuss
OpenStreetMap. So you should do that. It's great fun.

Part of our fun in Toronto in 2013 included, the 9th birthday party,
including a map cake. Twelve regularly scheduled Mappy Hour events,
two formal presentation events, three special guest events to
celebrate august mappers visiting from other places. (and a little
bit of a flood, but we soldiered on anyway.)

What about this thread? Tell me, what your plans are for 2014?

and have a Mappy New Year,

 Richard
