landuse=forestry is a good option as well.

Managed forest for product harvesting are commonly identified as
Plantations, which I think would be most appropriate term for landuse tag
in that case.

Re: [OSM-talk] Converting OSM roads to GIS dataset (Queensland, Australia)

2013-09-02 Thread Stephane Goldstein
I usually first extract the pbf file to a PostgreSQL database using osm2pgsql.

Then connect to the DB using any GIS software.

In osm2pgsql you can specify a bounding box and which features you want to
extract to the DB, to speed up the process.

Subject: [OSM-talk] Converting OSM roads to GIS dataset (Queensland, Australia)

Hello all,

I'm trying to convert the Queensland, Australia OSM roads into a GIS format
(esri shape or mapinfo) using GDAL 1.10

I downloaded a .osm.pbf file for australia from
http://download.geofabrik.de/australia-oceania/australia.html

I'm only really after the geometry that represents roads. So I don't need the
points or polygons.

Does anyone have any suggestions about any arguments I can put into my GDAL
command to restrict translation to only what I consider relevant?

For example, the argument -spat 136 -31 156 should restrict import to a
bounding box that approximately represents Qld.

I would appreciate advice on;
- what geometry layer suits my purposes
- how to specify that in a GDAL argument

Kind regards,

Re: [OSM-talk] OSM "software"

2012-03-09 Thread Stephane Goldstein
Thanks Jaime.

I think this is still beyond my reach right now.
I have no experience in development or coding.
I was thinking that maybe there was some simpler solution.
Maybe some day. I think it would be of great value for the GIS people to have
such tool at hands.

[OSM-talk] OSM "software"

2012-03-09 Thread Stephane Goldstein
Hello.

OSM has already been proved as the ultimate tool for collaborative mapping.

Is there a way someone could use the same platform to work on private mapping
colaboration projects ?

To explain myself better: In the wiki case, you can download the MediaWiki
software, install it on your server and run your own private wiki for
gathering, assembling and organizing information within your workgroup.

Is there a way to do the same with the OSM software ?

I just joined and NGO that works with volunteers from all over the world and
it would be really great for us if we could use the OSM system to create our
own maps and discuss about it.

Of course we could do it directly on the OSM database, but as we are in an
experimental phase, we would be "messing up" the OSM database.
Once our maps are concluded, we could then insert the relevant parts of our
work on OSM.
