[OSM-talk] OSM in Kosovo - Free Software Conference
Hi there, at the 29th and 30th of August there will be a Open Source Software Conference in Pristina. http://www.kosovasoftwarefreedom.org/ There is a call for papers. I think this conference would be a fantastic place to introduce Openstreetmap with a talk or workshop. Either for mapping or software developing. In our wiki ive found a Project Kosovo. So it seems, some people are already active in this area :) It would be great if somebody would have time to join this conference. Perhaps a short talk about OSM and what its all about. A booth with some information material Some flyers and posters. Perhaps even a mapping party could be organized with some GPS units to lend. http://sfck09.blogspot.com/2009/06/openstreemaporg-process-started-for.html Any help is welcome Cheers Thomas User:Schuk ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

[OSM-talk] Tim Burners Lee mentions OSM at TEDtalk
Hi, just wanted to share with you a TEDtalk by Tim Burners Lee on the "future" web. He uses osm as an example for linked data in wiki style and is pretty psyched about it :) http://www.ted.com/index.php/talks/tim_berners_lee_on_the_next_web.html Cheers Thomas ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

Christoph Eckert, however does have a Backup of the Polygon files: http://christeck.de/stuff/Polygons.zip They work pretty well. They should be on the svn somewhere. But I dont know where. You could even make custom flyers for the area you are mapping at the moment. This would show the person directly what you are working on and you can see for yourself where you still need to do some mapping. Some sort of scratchpad for yourself and others With some evidence in you hand it is much easier to show people what you are doing and even raise some interest in the project where you dont expect it. Photographers tend to have the same problem, when they want to photograph unusual (non touristic) places. I remember a story of a guy who was trying to photograph a highway by night (long time exposure). A policeman came by and was some kind of picky about what the strange guy with this strange equipment (DSLR, tripod, etc) was doing, unitl he showed him on the camera screen the results. Then the conversation started to go in the direction on how this was done and how he (the policeman) could do it by himself. Re: [OSM-talk] Tag proposal/approval system is too heavyweight

Some people hesitate to take part in open discussions, some do not. So you have to keep in mind that by taking apart one way of voting mechanism, you dont sabotage the whole process to get on a common sense. You simply redistribute the voices, so that everybody shouts on the same level ;-) I like the idea to analyse the used tags and show the distribution of every tag. Pros and Cons could be listed directly there. So everybody could make a picture for him/herself what seems to be the perfect way to tag his molehill. The problem I see, is that some concerns about tags are not permanently stored as there is no explicit need to update the wiki. A voting process implicit creates these pros and cons as you legitimate your vote most commonly in one or two sentences. So you have to be prepared that some tags are more often discussed on the mailinglist then before, as some people wont take the formerly "official" tags as god given and not changeable.
