Re: [talk-ph] Allowed uses of map
[http://www.gmanews.tv/story/210236/afp-eyes-transfer-of-major-service-commands-to-camp-aguinaldo] Is this an allowed use of OpenStreetMap? Is the Base map from OpenStreetMap sufficient? BTW, nice use of OSM. ;-) But yet it is non-licence-complaint use of OSM. A correct notification for this map could for example look like © OpenStreetMap contributors and GMANews.TV, CC-BY-SA This said, it is pretty obvious to me that GMA did not act in bad faith. They tried to give attribution to OSM, they just don't know how to do it the right way :P Theoretically problematic is that the license tag is missing too. So technically speaking they did not relicense their derivative work share alike. But practically I do not think that anyone wants to reuse that image anyway. Btw: License or not, it is certainly not a copyright violation if Wayne posts the link to that website in an email. :) Cheers soeren___ talk-ph mailing list talk-ph@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-ph
[talk-ph] Garminasus A50 and Maning's OSM-Gamin-files
Hi all (particularly maning) I just installed Maning's OSM-Garmin-file conversion ([http://esambale.wikispaces.com/osmphil_garmin]) on my new A50 (the Gaminasus Android phone). And - Hooray - it works. Kudos to Maning, Garmin and Asus. The A50 acts like any other Garmin device in terms of ./map/gsuppmap.img However what I observed is that there is a huge number of placetags recognized as Cities. Not only each Brgy and subdivisions thereof, but even single buildings with names. In result the phone apparently can't handle the data flood and indexes only the first few hundred entrees for each initial letter. E.g. for M from M'lang, North Cotabato to Maharlika. Did anyone observe the same on Garmin devices? Any idea how to fix it? cheers Soeren ___ talk-ph mailing list talk-ph@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-ph
[talk-ph] Google's Ed
Hi all, and merry Christmas. :) Regarding the issue of Wikimapia using googles images for tracing, while we don't because we honor google's IP (...), I would just like to update you that I do not take any action yet, because I am still monitoring the outcome of this talk on Ed Parsons Blog (http://www.edparsons.com/2008/10/who-map-is-it-anyway/). Apparently the public already increases the pressure on PArsons and Google to clarify the situation. Best case scenario: Google will generally allow it. However if they expressly forbit it and eforce this generally, it is also fine. Worst case scenario is what we have right now: Google is not allowing it, but tacitly tolerate it from Wikimapia; which in practical result means that decent projects like OSM are punished for their respect for google's IP. Lets see. Eventually google has to react to this. They are tooo big to hide behind the tree. :) Happy New YEar Soeren ___ talk-ph mailing list talk-ph@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-ph
Re: [talk-ph] another road renamed, another border duspute
Hi guys, sorry, i can hardly follow up anymore. I made the mistake to join three global OSM-talk-groups (talk, talk-legal and legal-general) and since then my inbox is BLOW AWAY by incomming traffic :/ Reg. the matter at hand: It is in fact a little bit tricky. Buendia Ave is tagged Senator Gil Puyat on a large strip now. Hmm. To be honest - and this is nothing against Senator Puyat - but I absolutely dont know anyone who calls that Street Puyat rather than Buendia. At least not the Makati portion of it. I think it should be name= and alt_name= for the names commonly used, i.e. the name ppl on the street actually use for that street. The rederers should display them as something like [name]([alt_name]), which they dont do yet, afaik. old_name= should be used for a former name, that is commonly accepted as derelicted. A tag new_name= might be used for a new name, that has not yet been commonly adopted ... and then eventually become alt_name, then name. OSM is a living map, that will adopt changes in the realworld at any time. Displaying historic names (i.e. names that fall under old_name=) on the normal map will make it confusing. For a historic map, someone should create a special historic-renderer. (That's the good thing about OSM, that you can use the data in many different ways.) Forbes for A.H. Lacson Ave. in Sampaloc or even Dewey Boulevard for Roxas Boulevard) that most people don't know them anymore. Renderers can then render the name of the street like name (old name) and dropping out the (old name) part if the old name is more than X years old, where X is a renderer-specified number. This is similar to renaming Scout Albano to Eugenio Lopez, Jr. Drive a few years back. Also, portions of Barangay San Lorenzo are being relocated to Barangays Pio del Pilar and Bangkal, whcih is technically illegal (in my opinion), since it needs a law to be passed by both houses of Congress and the President's signature for it to be oficial. I'm not concerned with the motives behind it. Rather, I'm putting this up as a reminder: don't move the boundaries (for now). These challenges for us isn't that exciting anyway. @ local tag: I endorse loc_place or at least ph_place as it looks the underscore is the established syntax in OSM for something like that (see loc_name , reg_name, nat_name, etc @ disputes and virtual shotguns: Joke lang, M8 :) Cheers -Ursprüngliche Nachricht- Von: maning sambale [EMAIL PROTECTED] Gesendet: 02.12.08 11:37:59 An: [EMAIL PROTECTED] CC: talk-ph@openstreetmap.org Betreff: Re: [talk-ph] wikipage philippines clean-up I'd vote for: place=village place:ph=barangay plus maybe an admin_level=9 or is it too much? and create a wikipage expalining ph specific tags cheers, maning On Tue, Dec 2, 2008 at 2:05 PM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Sure, It's the very point in Wikisystems, that many ppl together put together the arcticles :) I dont think we need something like an actual Wiki-Admin yet, since we are a very small goup. And put this to a seperate wikipage, every neeby should read before starting :) Where are we at with the Brgy tagging issue? I suggest to leave the place tag as is (i.e. village for brgys) However introducing an additional loc_place/nat_place tag to takes account of local concepts - as in the Philippines the Baragay is - is a good idea in my opinion, but should be a global concept and thus should be elevated to the root of OSM.
