Perhaps this:

http://en.flossmanuals.net/openstreetmap/

or one of the subsequent pages may be part of what you're looking for?

You could have a look at
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commons-based_peer_production which
applies to OSM - and which I think also describes this type of
crowdsourcing.

As crowdsourcing is sometimes thought of by internet capitalists as
getting stuff that would cost money done for free by volunteers, I
always try to tell people that: "crowdsourcing is not getting people
to do your work for you, but rather changing your work so that people
can participate and collaborate together with it"

Cheers,

Tim

Starting on the German "Hauptseite" (Main Page) in the wiki, there is a
"Anfänger" (Beginners) Link that points you to a page

   http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Willkommen_bei_OpenStreetMap

containing some "what is it all about" infos (in German, obviously):
- What is OpenStreetMap?
- How does it work?
- How can I contribute?
- What is the next step?
- Further information

The "Mitmachen" (Contributing) Link there then points to

   http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/DE:Getting_Involved

The English Main Page takes a slightly different approach, starting with a
"Contributing" Link that points to a somewhat spartanic "Beginners' Guide",
omitting any "what is it all about?". Maybe you could expand this and guide
beginners a little bit more...

If you need an explanation on Crowd Sourcing
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crowd_sourcing

In terms of OpenStreetMap, the wiki main page starts the description of as
"Welcome to OpenStreetMap, the project that creates and..."
I thought it used to be more explicit in it being volunteers(or some word
like public) that create the map. I may be wrong though, as I'm usually
explaining to people about OSM in my own words before directing them to any
pages.

[OSM-talk] Explanation of crowd sourcing?

2013-03-15 Thread Dave F.

Hi

I wanted to send a link to people who'd never heard of OSM that explains
the basics of what it is & entails, but I couldn't find a page with a
clear, simple explanation of what crowd sourcing is & that they can
contribute .

Even the beginners' guide seems to jump the first step by assuming the
beginner knows they can contribute:

http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Beginners%27_guide.

Am I going blind & there is such a page?

Cheers
