When Google returns results pointing to www.strassenkatalog.de I know
that OSM is the only place where this thing shows up in the internet.
Or - to be more exact - is the only place where Googles crawler found
it.
strassenkatalog seems to be one of those useless thousendfold
adress-and-phone register strewn across the web.

If you want google results with OSM in the first places, try some
loc_names.
Here an example: http://www.google.de/search?q=%22aze-stra%C3%9Fe%22

What are these 8 pitches? They are tagged "source=Bing", but don't look
like anything in the Bing background of P2.

That's a beautiful piece of work, Compliments to the French community for
that

Will your media work include NBC's Rosa Golijan? She will be stunned to see
the quality compared to Google Maps!

I don't think there is any active opposition against making OSM more
popular :-).

The question is more does it make any sense to try engage in
one-upmanship with google. It is just unlikely that we can win at their
own game, we have neither their resources nor can we easily make the
media so dependent on us as they are on google.

I believe it makes more sense to rely on word of mouth and to employ
guerilla marketing tactics to get the word out than sending out press
releases (we could try for a while to see if it makes difference
naturally). However, as has already been said, what we really need
right now is less theorizing on talk and more hands in the CWG.

2013-05-25 Thread Christian Quest
We did some media work around a new highway opening near Lyon.

It has been quite well received. We turned it around route
calculations as most players had outdated data the route proposed was
much longer than using the new highway ;)

http://openstreetmap.fr/a89

This page has been visited much more than usually and the referers
traced back to several local newspapers and website/blogs.

Taking advantage of a bridge collapse is another issue.. I don't feel
confortable of doing media work around something like that because it
is too much linked with a negative event.

Next media work is about Roland Garros international tennis tournament
which will start tomorrow outside of Paris... the area never looked as
great as on http://u.osmfr.org/m/275/ ;)

Of course, "money spent" in Google terms is "effort" in OSM terms,
since we all contribute to OSM without getting paid (ok, some are
fortunate enough that someone actually pays them to work on OSM, but
most of us are not in that position).

I don't see how OSM would want to play this game. We don't see logic
in this. However, this make PR work.

Apparently there are people who think it is important. Why would we not
want to improve on OSM by getting it know to the public? OSM starts to
have a huge benefit for people. I can't download the maps for my
navigation from Google, I get them from OSM. I certainly benefit from
having a more complete Openstreetmap.

If I remember correctly, we had it marked as "access=no" and the
segment removed about an hour faster than on Google. Somebody needs
to

get ahold of Rosa from NBC (who did the "article") and let them know
about OSM pawning Google here.

Google is known by the public.
Recently there was an important addition to the motorways around
Amsterdam here [1] (opening of the A5, 2e Coentunnel). Google didn't
have correct maps until 1,5 week afterwards. Of course OSM had correct
maps almost instantly (it was only unfortunate that there was a small
error and that osrm only updates once a week).

Maybe we need to be more vocal and send out messages to various news
sites when a new road is opened and it is on OSM and not on Google.
