For anyone curious, I've uploaded some sample photos from the Drift HD170.

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/767553/OSM/HD5.jpg

These are single frames from the 1080p 30fps mode. Pretty impressive.
For reference, HD1 and HD4 were taken in motion, the others were
roughly stationary. You can just make out the name of the street
across the road in HD5.

I haven't tried the timelapse mode in motion yet, but I'm skeptical
based on its performance indoors.

I guess the next thing to work out is how to marry about video with
the GPS trace. Any ideas? Some possible directions:
 - find some software that allows you to navigate a GPS trace by
relative time, so I can see where on the map 15:63 is.
- find some software that can navigate a (HD) video by location, so I
can point at a physical location and see the corresponding video
frames
- superimpose the trace on every frame of the video (I want to find a
way to do this anyway, because it would be cool)
- superimpose the trace and a fragment of Mapnik on every frame (ditto...)

Thanks for that. I'll probably get the GoPro Helmet Hero HD, as I like
the look of the timelapse modes.

On a tangent, this weekend I went out to map a couple of
walking/mountain biking paths. Rode 100km, including about 50km of
trails that weren't on OSM. Got back home and discovered that my most
recent firmware update had introduced a bug from Garmin which, you
guessed it, causes catastrophic data loss. I'm glad the ride was fun,
because as an OSM excursion it was a complete waste of a very long day
(5:30am to 11pm).

Hmm, good to know. What if you're below the sign and looking up?

Yes, it does capture a readable sign image for the near case, provided that
you're not facing the sun (a problem for any cam).   It takes a bit of
practice to get the aim correct for looking up at the sign as well - in my
case my eye to laser aim was different for looking up than when looking
 down.

Presumably it would be easily good enough for things like tracking the
surface of bike paths, bridges, junctions etc.

Perfect for that - I've even used it to capture house numbers posted on the
mailbox when the numbers are large and have good contrast.

[OSM-talk] Helmet cameras for mapping?

2010-07-12 Thread Steve Bennett
Hi all,
Wondering if anyone has tried a helmet camera like the GoPro Helmet
Hero HD or ContourHD for mapping? The former even has a mode where it
takes a 5MP photo every two seconds. Plus you could probably narrate
to it while riding along. You might even be able to just look at
street signs and have high enough quality to read them later.

Anyone tried?

I've been thinking about doing this for quite some time, but the cost is
prohibitive. I'm looking for a solution that can use older Canon CHDK-able
cameras.

I have the ContourHD, and while it's a fantastic sports cam, it's not close
enough to usable for reading street signs from just one street-width away.
