Re: [OSM-talk] More DNS issues with tile.openstreetmap.org (not resolving for me currently)

2013-08-16 Thread Grant Slater
Hi,

Quick, very technical background

* openstreetmap.org has 3 NS servers [abc].ns.bytemark.co.uk
* tile.openstreetmap.org CNAMES tile.geo.openstreetmap.org (bytemark)
* geo.openstreetmap.org has 4 NS servers [abcd].ns.openstreetmap.org
* tile.geo.openstreetmap.org is served by a PowerDNS Geo backend, which
based on source query IP replies with country code cname eg:
gb.tile.openstreetmap.org. ([abcd].ns.openstreetmap.org)
* gb.tile.openstreetmap.org replies with CNAME to closest Tile Cache Server
eg: amsterdam.tile.openstreetmap.org (bytemark)
* amsterdam.tile.openstreetmap.org replies with IP (bytemark)

The mistake...
A mistake in a deployment script of ours (fixed here:
http://git.openstreetmap.org/dns.git/commitdiff/42f905a1a337d4d0ccf0acb5ee0af8acc63df059)
incorrectly set the NS servers for
geo.openstreetmap.org to [abcd].ns.openstreetmap (note no suffix TLD) with
a very long TTL (~54 hours) causing the breakage.

Tile traffic is down a few % points and is improving. Yes, there are some
hacks we could use to get around the problem (tile2.openstreetmap.org or
geo2.openstreetmap.org), but we decided to just wait a little
(easier/safer/less-ugly-hack).

There are many great alternative maps:
 * http://tile.openstreetmap.fr/
 * http://openstreetmap.de/karte.html
 * Other layers on openstreetmap.org

Sorry ignore some of my last mail some of these failed online tools only work
on top levels domains (it late *yawn* and I wasn't paying attention) rather
than subdomains.

Anyway I still get a lookup fail.

Maybe it is just my ISP.*shrug*

[OSM-talk] More DNS issues with tile.openstreetmap.org (not resolving for me currently)

2013-08-16 Thread Rovastar
I am now getting DNS failed for

I am in the UK using a Vodafone mobile dongle to connect.

nslookup gives

C:\Users\Rovastar>nslookup tile.openstreetmap.org
Server:  UnKnown
Address:  88.82.13.12

*** UnKnown can't find tile.openstreetmap.org: Server failed

C:\Users\Rovastar>nslookup www.openstreetmap.org
Server:  UnKnown
Address:  88.82.13.12

Non-authoritative answer:
Name:www.openstreetmap.org
Addresses:  2001:630:12:500:219:bbff:fe39:8aba
  2001:630:12:500:21a:4bff:fea5:fd2a
  2001:630:12:500:219:bbff:fe39:3d9e
  193.63.75.103
  193.63.75.100
  193.63.75.99

My mobile EE is all ok.

I have tried a few other online sources I use to check DNS stuff (As I day
job for the past 14 years I am/have been a web hosting consultant)
CA/just-ping.com and that is ok.

http://cloudmonitor.ca.com/en/dnstool.php?vhost=_&vtt=1376692608&varghost=tile.openstreetmap.org&vaction=trace&trace=analyse

But pingdoms online DNS check gives errors doesn't even resolve currently.

http://dnscheck.pingdom.com/?domain=tile.openstreetmap.orgĂ—tamp=1376691983&view=1
(that is historic try again to test fresh)

and DNSstuff gives errors in your SOA.

http://www.dnsstuff.com/tools#dnsReport|type=domain&&value=tile.openstreetmap.com
but resolves.

Not all errors mean stuff is completely broken (you have to really
understand DNS and your setup to get the best understanding and some complex
large global corp DNS infrastuturces can do things in ways that confuse
online scanners IBM, etc) but it is for me and may be propagating around to
everyone

SOA errors often show something broken.

I would also a reduce your TTL you have been having (and still are) to less
then the current 24 hours until you get to bottom of these issues otherwise
the lag on fixing and/or creating more issue will be problematic to solve.

I can give you a hand diagnosing if needed.
