There are better solutions, at least for the bikes headlight. I do not know what the name is in english but the generator is mounted in the center of the wheel. Can't feel the resistance and it won't clog up by snow. See for example http://webhotel.uni2.dk/dcf/cyklist/cyk20005/20005-07.htm (in Danish). Usually called a hub dynamo in english I think. Obviously much harder to retrofit than a rim dynamo however ;-) Tom -- Tom Hughes ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) http://www.compton.nu/ ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/talk

Richard Fairhurst wrote: Looks interesting: http://www.ikonglobal.com/ http://www.treehugger.com/files/2005/03/pedal_power.php cheers Richard I bought a solar powered charger for 1,2 V NiMH AA batteries from ANSMANN. It can charge all my USB devices and the Sony Ericsson phone. It can also be recharged from the USB port of a computer. For the very long trekkings I carry 4 more rechargeable AA batteries that don't lose charge too much when not used. The big advantage is that I am now able to recharge by means of standard AA batteries and it works just as well when walking or taking the bus. No need for a bicycle. If it was really clever, it could alter the resistance electronically and proportionally to the break being pulled. You could have that on one wheel and a normal break on the other. Sounds like you want an electric wheel hub motor and use it for regeneritive breaking. If your attached batterypack is powerful enough you could also use it as e.g. an assistance motor uphill. It amazes me that nobody has come up with a simpler and more efficient solution. I've got one of these: www.freelights.co.uk It's a tumbling magnet inductive coil generator. It was also very cheap. Far less friction than a tyre-wall friction dynamo, it doesn't generate that much power, but it's enough to run flashing LEDs. It does just make a 'tick tick tick tick' sound as you move, and it's quite satisfying hearing the beats per minute of the ticking go up as you go faster. I used it as a back-up to my normal set of rechargeable battery lights, so that I've always got the legal minimum lights, even when my normal battery lights are flat. -- Simon Hewison ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/talk

Hi, In the Netherlands most new streetbikes are equiped with a wheelhub dynamo which solves your annoyances: no noise, no noticable resistance. And another plus: they're always enabled, so instant light in a tunnel (with a light sensor in your headlight). Because shimano europe returns 503 errors: http://sheldonbrown.com/harris/lighting/shimano.html IMO it's a perfect solution. Don't want to miss mine. Re: [OSM-talk] Never run out of batteries again!
German C't Magazine had an article a couple of months ago about how to keep a PDA/GPS charged with a hub dynamo while cycling. They basically showed you how to construct a buffer battery and electronics for it, that can fit into the seat tube. I dont know if there a English translation, the article unfortunately is paying. http://www.heise.de/kiosk/archiv/ct/2007/23/190_Mit_dem_Nabendynamo_Akkus_aufladen Jonas Svensson wrote: On Thu, 21 Feb 2008, Andy Robinson (blackadder) wrote: I remember those rim running dynamos on my bike as a kid.
