The process which invalidates the tiles suffered a segmentation fault
and stopped the import process. New tiles would still render OK but
would not include any recent edits. 

The import process is restarted now but will take some time to catch up.

It seems that tiles still aren't rendering; munin shows the renderd queue
is empty.  Is something still broken there?

All fixed now.
Squid fell over during a backup when disk space became tight. It acts
as cache for wiki and some of the mapnik tiles.

It's down, and there also seems to be a problem with generating new

Oh!  This is due to the max memory allocation for the PHP processor.  If 
you increase the max memory setting in the php.ini, it will fix this issue.

Change this line:
memory_limit = 8M  ; Maximum amount of memory a script may consume (8MB)

I have seen this problem in the past with PHP accelerators like, APC  
or eAccelerator. They are also linked to the version of PHP their we  
compiled against.

I've been noticing that here with my own servers Tom. It would be interesting 
to get to the bottom of this as it seems to be happening more often! I never 
used to have to restart Apache, but I've done it three or four times in the 
last month :(

Something (not sure what) was causing Apache not to return anything.
