Thanks for all the tips. Tried every trick but no good results thus
far. I guess this unit will be going to the shop for now.

Spooky, My eTrex Legend stopped receiving satellite reception when I
turned it on today. It works fine otherwise suggesting that its the
receiver not talking to the rest of the unit. I'll be calling Gramin
 in
 the morning.

Hope you get yours sorted out.

In addition to what Karl said, also try removing the batteries, and
possibly try turning it on without batteries or USB attached.

Call me crazy, but, without batteries or USB, I think it's safe to assume
that trying to turn it on isn't going to power it up ;)

Maybe it is making sure all residual power is consumed ensuring no residual
information is stored any where. An uber reboot of sorts :)

I don't know about etrex, but it wouldn't really be the first time when this
trick helps with electronics. They have often some reserve power for keeping
settings in memory during battery change. Turning it on would not power up the
unit, but it can reset the faulty settings to factory defaults.

Re: [OSM-talk] my etrex died?

2009-03-22 Thread Apollinaris Schoell
below is some info from Garmin. Didn't help mine and Garmin exchanged
it. Was lucky enough it happend in the warranty. was already second
unit they changed for me.

Thank you for contacting Garmin International.

I will be happy to assist. The eTrex has a Boot-Block function that
will allow WebUpdater to see the eTrex and reinstall its software.

WebUpdater is a free download that will check for and install software
updates without using your Internet web browser. Download the WebUpdater
for Windows here: http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=931
or for Mac here:
https://buy.garmin.com/shop/store/downloadsDetails.jsp?id=3699product=999-9-27pID=9566

Following are instructions on how to perform the Boot-Block on your
eTrex:

1. Connect the eTrex to a computer

2. Press and hold up on the THUMB STICK

3. Press and hold POWER for 5 seconds, release, and continue holding up
on the THUMB STICK 4. Run WebUpdater and the unit should be recognized
as if it were powered on

IMPORTANT: You must hold down up on the thumb stick until loading of the
software has completed! If the button is released at any point prior,
such as during the LOADER screen, the update will fail.

If the above does not correct the issue then the unit will need to come
in for repair. I will be happy to set up a Return Merchandise
Authorization (RMA) for the repair, however I will need additional
information to be able to do so. Please respond to this e-mail with the
following:

-Address
-A copy of your receipt showing the original date of purchase, for
warranty verification.

I will email you the address and your RMA number to have the unit
shipped back to us for the warranty repair. From the time that we
receive the unit, we should have it back to you within 10-14 business
days.

Please let us know if you have any further questions.
