Browsing through http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Special:NewImages
you see people uploading all sorts of icons, but as tiny bitmap images
rather than SVG. It would be nice to have someone organising it all
into one place so you didn't have to go searching over SVN to find
icons.

Wikimedia seems to be trying too:

First of all welcome! Always good to see new members of our ever growing
community :)

If you want to buy a GPS you might want to go with a Garmin since then you can
use OSM maps, which is awesome. However there are people here that know a lot
more about GPSes, which to buy, which to avoid. Also by searching on the wiki
you can find a lot of stuff.

According to you question about icons, OSM is, almost, complete anarchy. So
someone things of something creates an icon and it is done. So feel free to
create new images, a collective icon set would be awesome since it would
improve the overall look and feel of the map. Also maybe day/night icons etc
could be possible for navigation software or something.

I am not aware of any group in particular working on this, but I could be
wrong, so I guess it would be best to just create a place on the wiki and
start uploading nice (vector) images.

Yea, I looked around the wiki, just the page that is used to inform you
about buying a GPS (http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/GPS_Reviews) was just
a bit too overwhelming. As apposed to something like this:
http://www.bestinclass.com/digital-cameras, which makes the process a bit (a
lot) easier. So I thought I might try to ask here.

Thanks, that answers my 2nd question nicely.

Yea I intend to create the collection using Inkscape, and upload the
collection with SVG source and rendered PNGs of 32, 24, and 16 sizes. Also I
will make a wiki page once I get substantial progress. I'm intending to make
the collection somewhat follow
Tango!Icon
Guidelines, because the style guidelines really do make the icons look
nice.

I have created a list of what I'm going to try to create, please add/change,
sort the list how you think it should be, or just make comments at the
bottom. The list is located here:

http://docs.google.com/Doc?docid=0AXYd3_GKYmbBZGhwMjlkY3pfNWM2dzd6d2Ny&hl.

Finally, I have attached a traffic light (16, 24, 36 pngs) for input,
hopefully you all like it. (They follow this in a way when it comes to
naming:
http://standards.freedesktop.org/icon-naming-spec/icon-naming-spec-latest.html
.)

while the Garmin ones can use OSM maps, the chips they are still using is not
the newest and best
so it is harder to get a fix
My newest logger can actually get a fix inside my house, which was constructed
with a near complete Faraday cage design, although a fix takes much longer
than the 30 secs it needs outside.
Yesterday I stuck it to the top of my point-and-shoot camera
as that is my favourite recording item.

the other benefit over the Garmin with too many buttons is that after it
looses a fix no user input is required to restart logging

using i-887 from Transcend i-blue series, sold as photoMate.
it's not on the wiki yet, the wiki crashed the night I was going to add it

Garmin has some big benefits. they have rugged outdoor devices and the
support for maps worldwide is superior. now with osm and mkgmap even
better.
If you don't need these features they are pretty lame compared to many other
devices
depends on your priorities.

OSM is about the data, it's up to individual clients to decide what icons
they want to use.

The Map_Features icons, as a set, aren't actually used by anything AFAIK.
Certainly they wouldn't be used by anyone with a ounce of cartographic
self-respect. ;)

cheers

There are various icon sets. I'd suggest you have a further look at
what is available, if only for inspiration:

http://svn.openstreetmap.org/applications/share/map-icons/
http://www.sjjb.co.uk/mapicons/SJJBMapIconsv0.03/recoloured/
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Category:Icon

There is also an icons set used by Potlatch and cloudmade which I
believe has an svg base (although I've only ever seen png renderings -
does anyone have a link to a source?)

If you want to create a nice consistent set of icons I'm sure it would
be welcome but as Richard said it is up to each developer to decide
what they want to use for their application.
