Databankrecht is mogelijk iets anders. Adopt a Code of Conduct. The wiki has a draft proposal [1] for a Code of Conduct. Let's dust this off, approve it, and live by it. (HOT has a Code of Conduct [2] we could consult for revision of the draft.) 2. Last year the DWG proposed clarifying the Import Guidelines. [3] Let's organize a group of volunteers (because that's all we have) to review and revise the import guidelines. The makeup of the group should include people from different countries as well as a representative from the DWG. Until these guidelines are revised, let's use the existing guidelines. 3. The DWG should regularly report back to the community with data indicating the type of problems they encounter. That data should be made available to the Import Guidelines committee that I'm proposing. As a community we should be making decision, when possible, with good data. I strongly encourage the DWG to update their OSMF Tasks to include data based decisions making. Re: [OSM-talk] OSM Code of Conduct
Hi Frederik, I think that we can do both, albeit separately. I agree that our CoC can be similar to other organization's, but I want to be sure that our CoC doesn't get diluted or overlooked in the process, so I definitely don't think they should be the same thing. As strange as it sounds, even just a set of rules saying be a nice person need to be well thought through and can be surprisingly controversial. I'd rather let them be their own entity and have another document that lays out mapping guidelines. Would you object to us pursuing these goals separately? It's not that they aren't both important, just that I can seem them getting in the way of each other. I probably should clarify, I'm really talking about paths that have been tagged highway=path without including any other tags. I'm sure with a bit of direction and encouragement people would include the surface=what ever it is tag. If the mapper doesn't know the surface, then fair enough, leave it out. But I think more often than not the mapper probably would know at least enough to tag it paved or dirt. From this I've gained a new insight into the highway=path tag so am posting here. Firstly my focus is on tracks and trails so that is where I'm coming from. The basics of what I have noticed is that a lot ways are tagged highway=path with no other information. I have found this to be a difficult problem when it comes to rendering. The highway=path tag is a little different to the other highway tags. Firstly it covers quite a broad range of features for walking, cycling, horse riding. Secondly it has no default surface type. For example roads default is paved unless otherwise specified, highway=track defaults to unpaved. Highway=path doesn't have a default. Before messing around with rendering I would tag as highway=path and not bother too much with the other assortment of tags. Partly this is because there are heaps of tags that can be used and there was no particular direction on their priority or importance of use. For rendering I really need a surface tag included to separate the paths into practical catagories. Having no surface tag results in such a large mix of data that it becomes impractial to define any further. However if the surface=paved,dirt.. whatever is used the usefulness of the data is massively increased. For rendering I (and other examples of rendering I have seen) use the highway=path, surface=paved,dirt..etc tag to split the data into paths that are paved and paths that are not paved. This results in a practical ability to split surfaced paths (butumen, cement, pavers etc) and trails (gravel, dirt etc). I'd like to see the difference between: walking trails, dirt trails, single track etc. and paved paths, bitumen paths, concrete paths etc. And I'm sure I'm not alone in this. So in summary: highway=path is a unique tag because it covers a broader range of features than most tags. highway=path has no surface default like most other way tags do. adding the surface=paved,dirt,..,.. etc adds a much need qualifier for pratical rendering. My request: Firstly that people tagging paths consider adding the surface tag as well. You probably already know the surface (as I always did even though I didn't realise the significance of adding the tag) and if you're interested in paths your likely one of those most interested in having it rendered in a practical way. Secondly I think this is worth adding to the Australian Tagging Guidelines wiki in some form. ie Please add the surface=paved,dirt,..,.. etc when tagging paths. Preferred minimum being paved or dirt. What do you think?
Re: [Talk-GB] Update: Deploying our own version of NYPL Building Inspector
Hi folks, here's my thoughts Moving forward: Remember that people will fix the automatic vectorisations if they are off - they can also add extra buildings if need be also. I think we have enough to move it forward and see what happens. As the NYPL Building Inspector says: Don't let perfect be the enemy of good Branding: Yes I think it should be branded an OHM project - but with space for donors and supporters particularly if other organisations apart from NLS want to get involved. I've also forked the project into the OpenHistoricalMap repo https://github.com/OpenHistoricalMap/building-inspector as I think that's the best place for it (not sure why I didn't do that at first, tbh) cheers, Tim On 1 June 2014 18:25, Rob Nickerson rob.j.nicker...@gmail.com wrote: Hi All, An update on progress deploying our own version of NYPL's historic map vectorizer/building inspector tool [1]. 1. Chris Fleet from National Library of Scotland (NLS) has kindly provided a couple of GeoTiff example scans from their London 1890's maps [2]. 2. Using the NYPL map-vectorizer [3] I am able to get initial building outlines from these maps. 3. Tim Waters has managed to get a copy of the NYPL website up ready for loading NLS's maps/vectorized buildings. This is at [4]. Meanwhile he has opened initial conversations with the British Library who also have a good collection of historic maps. 4. I am concerned that the initial building outlines end up leaving gaps between terraced buildings. This is due to the way that the NYPL map-vecotrizer works to trace the _inside_ of buildings. I'm no GIS expert so may be missing a simple solution. However I have noticed that we could use the Strava Slide tool [5] to 'slide' the building polygons onto the building walls. In essence this works by using pixel blackness of the map scan (rather than GPS traces as per the initial Strava Slide tool). 5. I have contacted Paul at Strava to ask about this. He thinks the idea is a really good one and is hoping to add the functionality we will require. He's a bit busy at the moment but is presenting at FOSS4G (in September?) and would like to use this as an example of what's possible with slide. So, where does this leave us? Well we're at the same place as NYPL so could go ahead with adapting the website Tim put up to our needs and then launch when ready. Or, we could hold off until Paul at Strava is able to add the functionality we need to the Slide tool. Thoughts? Also, are folks happy for this to be branded as an OpenHistoricalMap project? (Chris at NLS is okay with this). Re: [Talk-GB] Update: Deploying our own version of NYPL Building Inspector
Well we can certainly get on with the website. The bits that people fix are only the major issues (processed as individual buildings) so I don't think they'll fix any terrace gap issues. I was hoping to use Strava Slide before people start manually fixing but we could always do it after instead (and then just eyeball it ourselves for any new errors). So we can ignore the old github repo and use the new one then? I'm busy this week but will aim to look at the website from next week. If anyone has some good images we could use in place of the default NYPL ones then shout :-) Rob On 2 June 2014 15:15, Tim Waters chippy2...@gmail.com wrote: Hi folks, here's my thoughts Moving forward: Remember that people will fix the automatic vectorisations if they are off - they can also add extra buildings if need be also. [Talk-GB] OSM session at Wikimania 2014
Hi Andy, Looks great. Don't forget that we have a wiki as part of OpenStreetMap. There are some really simple tasks that Wikimedia folk could help us with. For example setting up a bot to fix our ridiculous number of double redirects: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Special:DoubleRedirects It's not all big projects - little ones are also much appreciated :-D Best, Rob ___ Talk-GB mailing list Talk-GB@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-gb

No more of this please. I'd place this thread under moderation if I could, but since Ian is on vacation, I will have to rely on you all to do the right thing and take this wholly inappropriate mode of discussion offline. Unlike other data that we collect, there is nothing in the ground indicating the existence of this as a route. There's no sign indicating where the route is, so there's be no way to collect this data other than by looking at an external dataset and either importing or tracing. You're just a little bit insane, Serge. Let's say that I follow this route on my bicycle using a cue sheet and keep a GPS track. Then I load my GPS track into JOSM and create a relation and call it USBRS #47 (or whatever). How is this an import?? I think that's an import, because it's taking external data and applying it to OSM without even the potential for ground validation. You're twigging this as an import because there aren't any signs on the ground. What if I post my cue sheet on a sign? Again, how does this become an import? It bears none of the problems of imports: o imports create a whole new set of nodes. o imports can have copyright issues. o imports can be non-human-scale. o imports can be data dumps that don't get maintained. o imports make bulk changes to the database. This is nothing like that. Your *only* reason for calling this an import is because there aren't any signs. Yet. That reason isn't good enough to call it an import. We have a lot of data that we could include in OSM that would be useful. Everything that people care about having in a map is useful. You don't care about this. Fine. Somebody else doesn't care about something you want in OSM. Imagine *cooperating* with other people. I think that this kind of data doesn't belong in OSM. And when you see it on OpenCycleMap? Does it belong there? Should we fork the database now, so that we have a Serge OSM and a Nelson OSM and a USBRS OSM? Remember what I said earlier: a little bit insane. -- --my blog is athttp://blog.russnelson.com Crynwr supports open source software 521 Pleasant Valley Rd. | +1 315-600-8815 Potsdam, NY 13676-3213 | Sheepdog ___ Talk-us mailing list Talk-us@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-us -- Martijn van Exel President, US Chapter OpenStreetMap http://openstreetmap.us/ http://osm.org/ ___ Talk-us mailing list Talk-us@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-us
[Talk-us] Whole-US Garmin Map update - 2014-05-31
These are based off of Lambertus's work here: http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl If you have questions or comments about these maps, please feel free to ask. However, please do not send me private mail. The odds are, someone else will have the same questions, and by asking on the talk-us@ list, others can benefit. Downloads: http://daveh.dev.openstreetmap.org/garmin/Lambertus/2014-05-31 Map to visualize what each file contains: http://daveh.dev.openstreetmap.org/garmin/Lambertus/2014-05-31/kml/kml.html FAQ Why did you do this? I wrote scripts to joined them myself to lessen the impact of doing a large join on Lambertus's server. I've also cut them in large longitude swaths that should fit conveniently on removable media. http://daveh.dev.openstreetmap.org/garmin/Lambertus/2014-05-31 Can or should I seed the torrents? Yes!! If you use the .torrent files, please seed. That web server is in the UK, and it helps to have some peers on this side of the Atlantic. Why is my map missing small rectangular areas? There have been some missing tiles from Lambertus's map (the red rectangles), I don't see any at the moment, so you may want to update if you had issues with the last set. Why can I not copy the large files to my new SD card? If you buy a new card (especially SDHC), some are FAT16 from the factory. I had to reformat it to let me create a 2GB file. Does your map cover Mexico/Canada? Yes!! I have, for the purposes of this map, annexed Ontario in to the USA. Some areas of North America that are close to the US also just happen to get pulled in to these maps. This might not happen forever, and if you would like your non-US area to get included, let me know. -- Dave ___ Talk-us mailing list Talk-us@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-us

Re: [Talk-us] USBRS WikiProject seeks volunteer mappers
I’ve always thought the “signage” thing was a little absurd anyway — as if the signs are somehow the official documentation and not a reflection of the official documentation. Yet somehow, using the official documentation becomes an import. That makes no sense to me. Darrell Steve wasn't talking about proposed routes at all: USBRs 1, 10, 36, 37, and 50 are officially approved routes. There's nothing to open, though the signage situation varies from state to state. AASHTO designation doesn't come with a deadline for signage, but the state DOTs didn't go through the trouble of getting local and national approval just to sit on these designations. And when the signs do go up, we can be assured that they'll go up along the officially approved routes. ___ Talk-us mailing list Talk-us@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-us

While not quite what you intended, I believe you do illustrate a major sore point with building the routes simply from whatever documentation will/is supplied. It skips actually verifying the individual segments on the ground which is part of providing a high quality route (signed or not) in OSM. It is something that I would be very wary of doing in areas where we have a consistent road network and definitely will lead to GIGO in the states. To put it differently: if the import was combined with systematic surveying of the routes by OSM contributors instead of them just sitting at their desk then it would be a lot more palatable. [ Of course, I'm not putting anything in OSM since it's not even under any sort of official development yet. I think that nobody would be complaining if I did the above. How, then, does it suddenly become an import if I skip the step where I bicycled the portion of the route I am entering? I cannot see how it does. I'm not arguing about the quality of the route chosen by AASHTO. Maybe they did a good job, maybe they didn't. I'm saying that the negative characteristics of an import are completely absent from this project: o imports create a whole new set of nodes. o imports can have copyright issues. o imports can be non-human-scale. o imports can be data dumps that don't get maintained. o imports make bulk changes to the database. If an import is completely signed in every case, that doesn't solve any of the problems caused by an import. -- --my blog is athttp://blog.russnelson.com Crynwr supports open source software 521 Pleasant Valley Rd. | +1 315-600-8815 Potsdam, NY 13676-3213 | Sheepdog ___ Talk-us mailing list Talk-us@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-us
