[Talk-us] Imports, trails, POIs for National Parks
Hi, I noticed that there is a bit of work going on with importing Park data. I know that's a broad subject, anything from Forest Service Roads to GPSed trails from vacations, hydrology imports and as always, fixing TIGER data… There's a bunch out there. I wanted to get a feel for what, if any, work has been done for National Parks in the US. Is there anyone here (or an OSM wiki page perhaps) where folks are organizing to get Yosemite, the Grand Canyon and Rocky Mountain National Park mapped (to name a few ;))? I am also looking to build out a Project of the Week (or Month) to do some concentrated effort in this direction. http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Project_of_the_week/Proposals#Date_Specific I think it would be super cool to have our National Parks so well mapped it is the go-to resource for this summers family road trips and outdoor adventures or the closer in hikes in the afternoon! [OSM-talk] SOTM Denver travel discounts?
Hi Nick, You are right about the travel discounts! I am waiting on a few more details before this offer is 'live' but here is what it looks like. We will have a Meeting ID # that you will use either online or by calling United. This will get a traveller 10%-20% off regular published fares with United Airlines (and I believe the Star Alliance group). Travel will be available Sept 1st- Sept 30th, so giving OSMers plenty of time to travel around! We should be able to have the call in code ready by the end of the week. For online, they have warned me there is about a 14 day waiting period, but then you can book online. Your travel can originate from anywhere, with the destination being Denver. We need a minimum of 20 passengers to take advantage of this offer, so be sure to bring all your best mapping buddies :) More information coming soon! Best, Hurricane Hi, Am 99% certain of coming to Denver this September for SOTM. I'd like to book flights as soon as possible before the fares start creeping up nearer the time, however ISTR a mention of travel discounts when the venue was first announced. Is this still going ahead? I'm planning on coming over for 2 weeks, to combine SOTM with a holiday (7th-21st or 8th-22nd); will any discounts be valid in that case? Would be coming from London. Re: [Talk-us] why are you missing out on the this fun?
Hi Richard! You are so right about having fun with mapping and getting social! Along with posting events to the OSM calendar, talk lists, and IRC, I also use meetup.com to help outreach to new mappers. [1] It's free and you can capture people already interested in open source, GIS, mapping, spatial fun, hiking, biking, etc. This link here: http://www.meetup.com/everywhere/openstreetmap will help anyone set up a meetup anywhere in the world. So in a way, this method helps with the just pick a date and place and do it! that you mention. I've also seen other local groups use google groups. Also, the folks at MapQuest have open forums to help people create mapping parties, questions with Potlatch2 and many other subjects. Message-ID: AANLkTikS4h8Cq_XhNbcXrVznAN8Z-usDOuQkz3q3mQ_=@mail.gmail.com Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Why aren't you getting more fun out of OpenStreetMap? Because you don't know the right people. That's right. You'll enjoy OSM even more than you do now, once you meet some additional local mappers. But to do that you have to actually meet them. Yes, email is nice, IRC is fine, but you have to meet them in person. And you won't know how much more fun that is until you do it. Do you have an OSM group that meets in your town? You should. There are regular OSM meetings in every town in Germany with more than two traffic signals.[1] But there are only three OpenStreetMap groups that meet regularly in the US. That means that there are only six traffic lights in the USA![2] That is wrong! You need to start a local OSM group in your town. Other mappers are waiting for you to pluck up your nerve, pick a location and a date, AND DO IT! Book it. Add your local group to the OSM calendar[3], announce it on talk-us@ and IRC. Invite the local cycling group, Open Data group and Linux user group. They are all waiting to hear from you. That's all the planning you have to do. The toughest part is just setting the first date and that doesn't sound hard at all. Now do it. You'll meet the right people. And have more fun. This is only a small sample of where it is: http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=39.7399lon=-105.4256zoom=13layers=M Can someone help with the hydro info for this river? It follows I-70 and highway 40. It’s a pretty major creek, for Colorado anyhow. Have you looked at the NHD datasets: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/National_Hydrography_Dataset People can signup to work on basins and sub-basins: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/NHD/Basins_West If I do any, they will be ones on the east coast. Ian's shp-to-osm tool has sample rulesets for NHD data, making it fairly easy to deal with importing NHD data. -Katie Thanks! [OSM-talk] OSM and MapQuest [was Hurricane hits MapQuest]

Is there anything that we the OSM mappers can do to improve them? You bet! As Ivan Sanchez Ortega famously says, Map. Map. Mappes! MapQuest is very dedicated to helping improve the US community and on a larger scale: map detail and quality. With that said, the most important concept to remember is what helps OSM as a whole, helps the US! In other words are there any particular wishes from the Mapquest people about how the data can be improved? We do have a wish list that I'm sure is quite similar to many OSMers. But let me turn around the question to the community: how do you think the data can be improved? But would be happy to find some volunteers and do a few usability tests in Denver before then, I would like to offer the MapQuest offices to do usability testing. We could get the PA office in on it too, for more responses. Not necessarily volunteering MQers (though that's a possibility) but it could be a nice central location. and record them so others can see them (in SF or wherever). Obviously would be good to have some scenarios worked out on the wiki before doing that. Incidentally, I summarized what I think are some of the key points from the Don't make me think book (and my general experience) on usability, with some geo-examples, in a recent 5 minute talk at Ignite NoCo (Northern Colorado), in case anyone is interested: http://vimeo.com/15015261 This is awesome Peter! :) ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk
[Talk-us] Mapping event in Colorado October 9th
Howdy OSMers! The Colorado OSM group ( http://www.meetup.com/OSM-Colorado/) would like to announce a mapping event in Idaho Springs, Colorado. Details are here: http://www.meetup.com/OSM-Colorado/calendar/14785687/?from=listoffset=0 and to sign up! We chose Idaho Springs because of it’s locality and size. During the ski season, Idaho Springs is a major stop off to let the bumper to bumper traffic subside. It also has one of the best pizza joints in the US. And we can map it in a day! If you’re in the area, please join us! We will have GPSs to loan out as well as smart-phone savvy folks to help you learn to map with iPhones or Androids. Happy mapping, Hurricane P.s.
