Re: [talk-au] Charleville gone

2012-07-19 Diskussionsfäden Gordon Smith
So much effort gone down the drain.

In my own case I've discovered that even though I'd mapped the entire
length of the Waterfall Way from Armidale to Coffs Harbour long ago,
somebody at some time has edited pieces and now, because they've not
ticked the box, those edits appears as gaps along the route. e.g.:

  http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=-30.4815lon=152.9683zoom=14layers=M

So I can't even assume that anything that I contributed and thus thought
might be complete, is complete.

Assuming you didn't throw your data away (in any case your changesets can
still be consulted) it is simply a matter of tracing the road geometry from
bing (seems to be ok there) and adding your stuff back in.

To think that if the importer had ticked a single check box it would have
saved the work. Some people just want to watch the world burn.

Re: [talk-au] Recommendations for iPhone track logging

Hi Ben,

I use Trails though no direct OSM upload (which suits me):

iLOE (iPhone Little OpenStreetMap Editor) is a useful little utility too:

 Hi.

Does anyone have any recommendations for an iPhone app that can record track

I'm looking for something to recommend to people who might be able to collect
data in unmapped areas. Being able to display a map is not so important, as
this will be mostly in areas that are not mapped, although being able to
display the map as it takes shape might be good.

Something like OSMTrack looks like it will do the job.
http://www.osm4iphone.com/ Has anyone used this? Is there something else that
 is better?

As this may be in out-of-the-way places, the ability to work without an
 internet connection would be good.

Was it just me, or was there no announcement on the OSMF list (or
elsewhere like the wiki front page) that the voting had opened?

Or did I just miss it?

Either way, I missed the opportunity to vote - I hadn't checked my email
 for two days... :(

 Matt

There was an email entitled Voting for Board Members a few days ago.
It would have been much more useful if it had said VOTING NOW OPEN.

Then, as Liz said, Frederick Ramm mailed a reminder (in upper case to
wake people up).

Re: [talk-au] Oodnadatta Track

2009-07-12 Diskussionsfäden Gordon Smith
Hi Russell,

Yes, the track itself has been done. The southern half, Marree to the
Coober Pedy turnoff had been done a little while ago; I finished the
northern half in June. It's the road to the west of Lake Eyre:

  http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=-28.31lon=136.21zoom=8layers=0B00FTF

There are plenty other roads nearby though; I planned to do the Painted
Desert road, for exmaple, but ran out of time.

The track to the east of Lake Eyre is the Birdsville Track, then east again
is the Strzelecki Track.

There's no NextG access (though when I did the Strzelecki Track I was
surprised to find that NextG is now available at Moomba).

Happy travelling.

Is there someone who wants to work with me, to take the GPS traces and
upload them? Depending on internet access (Telstra NextG), I might be
able to upload some information while still in the field.

[talk-au] Validator in JOSM - extra picky?

2009-02-28 Diskussionsfäden Gordon Smith
OK, so I admit that I might hide under a rock now and again and not
know the latest and greatest gossip about every plugin that JOSM might
use; hence this (perhaps tirvial) question.

Once upon a time the Validator plugin for JOSM would let me know when
I'd made silly typos, or hadn't tagged something appropriately, or had
crossing ways, etc. And all was well in the world of maping.

Now, when I use the current version of Validator, in conjunction with
josm-latest, I'm told that pretty much every tag I've ever used in the
past doesn't exist in the presets. It doesn't like the name key
(even when the preset lets me type a name in), it doesn't like
source=survey, it doesn't like type in relations, ..., and on and
on. It's got to the point where I can't see the real errors because
of the volume of warnings that now appear.

Neither the wiki nor Google have helped me track down why these
informational errors are now being spat back at me.

So, dear list members, what pronouncement have I missed? What has
been updated or changed that I don't yet know about?

Cheers,

Gordon

[talk-au] Mapping bushwalks

2008-10-23 Diskussionsfäden Gordon Smith
This example of the use of OSM may be of interest to a few people.
I've been mapping bushwalks and fire trails in the gorge country
around where I live:
  http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=-30.7427lon=152.016zoom=14layers=B000FTF

It comes alive, though, if you add the Cycling Map layer:
