[talk-au] Yahoo imagery on Potlacth

2008-02-18 Thread Darren Osborne
I've noticed that the Yahoo imagery on Potlatch has disappeared. I
was using it to trace a lot of streets in suburban Sydney to then
test out when driving. To date they had been extremely good.

Is this the same for JOSM? Will it be returning on Potlatch.

Darren,

Are you sure this isn't because of the new imagery layers that have
been added to Potlatch? You can now select between Y!, OpenAerialMap
and OSM map layers within Potlatch.

Hi Greg

Ah I did it on Potlatch -- sorry about that.

I still have a lot more points that the surrounding OSM data.

There is (was?) a simplify way command available in JOSM, but you need
to add one of the plugins first.

It is part of the UtilsPlugin, which you can install from the Plugin tab of the
JOSM preferences screen.

Java problems.

java -Xms512m -Xmx512m josm.jar will set the java heap size to 512MB.

Just out of curiousity, is there a per process memory size or file descriptor
limit you are hitting there?

[talk-au] josm "out of memory" error

platform linux 2.6.20-gentoo-r8 (amd64)

JOSM Last Changed Rev: 524

I had 1G of RAM in this machine, and when I try to load too much into JOSM I
get an out of memory error. There is 2G of swap active.
JOSM makes no use of the swap and does not give the OS time to swap out any
thing else.

I just put in another 1G of RAM. JOSM is using up to 1G and not touching the
second 1G at all, then giving an out-of-memory error. This happens with swap
use at zero if the machine has not been running long.

Can anyone give me some pointers?
Java upgrade?
JOSM problem?

object was to load australia.osm (266.8MB)

setting the size to 512, 1024 too small
2048 swapped out everything and ran very very slow

changing the window manager, preventing the loading of 70 other processes, 6
virtual desktops and every other memory hog by starting twm instead of kde

allowed it to function slowly with virtual machine size set at 1536

I certainly don't have any more spare RAM in the house, so there ends the
experiment.
For normal use I'll find a suitable number between 1024 and 1536 to give me
some more space to use JOSM
and I'll work out how to carve pieces out of planet.osm and australia.osm for
myself

i'm glad we have mapped enough of Australia so that you can't load it all
into 1.5GB of memory.

lets keep going..

FYI, I loaded it on a MacBook Pro (OSX 10.5.2) with 4 GB memory using:

   java -Xms512m -Xmx2048m -jar ~/Applications/josm-snapshot-546.jar
~/Documents/maps/20080206-australia.osm

It's a tad slow though :-)
