Weekends are easy to account for, school holidays aren't as easy but I'm sure some where there would be suitable information, and you just build it up from there as to which school zone applies to which dates. Police have been known to book people on pupil free days in NSW and possibly other states. > Actually, on a serious note, I'd love to have a routing > algorithm that > avoids schools during child dropoff and pickup hours when > possible. I don't think they knew what an indicator was in the first place. Also the slow downs that are the most annoying at like the Pacific Highway or Epping Rd in Sydney to name but a few, 3 lanes each way and you have to slow down for stupid school zones that kids shouldn't be going near if they're likely to get hit. As I said before, it's easy enough to work out weekends, school dates are another matter but at least aussie schools tend to have the same dates across the entire state, unlike in the US. The question still remains how to best uniformly tag these areas so other things like routing can take advantage of it. ___ Talk-au mailing list Talk-au@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-au

How accurate are you wanting to go? To be truly accurate, you're going to need to take weekends and school holidays into account as well. Actually, on a serious note, I'd love to have a routing algorithm that avoids schools during child dropoff and pickup hours when possible. I don't mind the slowing down bit, it's the waiting 10 minutes while the school empties out across the road, playing russian roulette with triple parked parents in 4WD's and dodging school buses that seem to have forgotten they have indicators that bugs me. It's not a type of vehicle restriction or most other restrictions listed. hour_on/hour_off could apply, but you'd end up with: hour_on=08:30;14:30 hour_off=09:30;15:30 So would it be best to look at this as a new type of restriction, listing the maxspeed for the school zone when active, rather than yes? eg highway=residential maxspeed=50 school_zone=40 hour_on=08:30;14:30 hour_off=09:30;15:30 > I think the latter can be represented by a restriction with > set times. Re: [talk-au] school zones
Hi. There are probably 2 things here: 1) It is a school zone 2) The speed limit is different on this stretch of road at different times of the day I think the latter can be represented by a restriction with set times. I don't know of anything that parses these yet, but that would seem to be the way to do it. - Ben. 2009/6/22 John Smith > > Judging by the tagwatch site it's pretty hit and miss about the whole > affair. > > Just like maxspeed is important, I think time based zoning is just as > important, if not more so. > > Does anyone have any suggestions on the best way to do this that could be > put into a proposal? > > I was thinking something like the following, so that it could be parsed by > apps displaying the current speed limit for example, it could pull data from > somewhere about if it's a school day or not, and then use the applicable > zone start/stop times to display the speed limit currently. > > highway=residential > maxspeed=50 > school_zone=08:30-09:30;14:30-15:30 > school_zone_maxspeed=40 > > > > ___ Talk-au mailing list Talk-au@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-au

[talk-au] My "viewing" problems (continued...)
Hi guys Thanks for your tips. I have extended my search to the newbies forum too. On top of what I've already done this is what I've done tonight. . I can open both JOSM and Merkaator and the maps open ok - although without any familiarity of these two - I can see my general area in both slippy maps. . I have used tracert and in all 3 tile locations I have a single "timed out" at step 2 ie to my ISP, then it works until step 23 when it times out again (through to step 30 after which the program stops) after "LMN-LMN1.site.ja.net" at 146.97.42.62 - I'm not sure what I was supposed to see here though? . I changed the DNS to opendns and tried opening maps and pinging and tracerting again. I also rebooted with similar lack of success. . I opened the links http://a.tile.openstreetmap.org/0/0/0.png http://b.tile.openstreetmap.org/0/0/0.png http://c.tile.openstreetmap.org/0/0/0.png and they all worked. . I have looked at my internet options and images aren't blocked (I have no trouble downloading images from anywhere else) . I have checked my firewall (Windows Defender) and anti-virus program (McAfee) but see nothing that I would say is causing difficulty. . I unloaded some of the add-ins I installed recently for Firefox. . I checked the hosts file in %SystemRoot%\system32\drivers\etc\ and only saw 127.0.0.1 local host and ::1 local host (so I assume that was ok) I have Windows Vista with SP2. I keep all my programs up to date. I am on broadband with oodles of memory - and didn't have a problem until 6 weeks or so ago. Very frustrating. Any further tips? [talk-au] school zones
Judging by the tagwatch site it's pretty hit and miss about the whole affair. Just like maxspeed is important, I think time based zoning is just as important, if not more so. Does anyone have any suggestions on the best way to do this that could be put into a proposal? I was thinking something like the following, so that it could be parsed by apps displaying the current speed limit for example, it could pull data from somewhere about if it's a school day or not, and then use the applicable zone start/stop times to display the speed limit currently. highway=residential maxspeed=50 school_zone=08:30-09:30;14:30-15:30 school_zone_maxspeed=40 ___ Talk-au mailing list Talk-au@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-au
