[talk-au] Leads to loan out GPS devices...
Well I now have 2 GPS devices and no contacts in the Gympie/Sunshine Coast area of people who do a lot of traveling to lend them out to. I've also been pondering about the accuracy issue of the usb gps data logger. Conclusion I came up with was multiple traces should counter the problem with accuracy, that GPS logger has the capacity for about 125 hours worth of data. It also fit most of the other criteria I originally set out, no battery but can plug into a cig socket, it doesn't have a display just a blinky green LED and hopefully no one will bother pinching it. ___ Talk-au mailing list Talk-au@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-au
[talk-au] Rendering OSM as SVG
Hi. Does anyone have any pointers as to how to go about producing a good quality printed map from OSM? I have had a bit of a play with Kosmos, but it looks like it produces raster images. For a good printed map I will need a vector image. I figured there is probably some process involving SVG, but I have been unable to find any good how-tos on the wiki. Basically I'm wanting to produce a custom cycle map. It will be similar to the cycle map layer on OSM, but with a few customisations. - Ben. ___ Talk-au mailing list Talk-au@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-au
[talk-au] NASA completes another elevation map
Apparently NASA and the Japanese space agency has released another elevation map for the Eath which has 99% coverage using a 98ft grid, so roughly 9x the resolution of SRTM's ~90m grid. BBC news have it covered here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/8126197.stm There's also discussion on Slashdot: http://news.slashdot.org/story/09/06/30/1650208/Most-Complete-Topographical-Map-of-Earth-Complete?art_pos=11 I wonder how long it will be before OSM will be able to integrate this data... It would be nice to have a higher resolution dataset so the topo lines can be smoother and more accurate. Anybody know how this data can be downloaded? There was comments about this on the main talk list and before you can download the data you have to a number of things including that you agree to only distribute the data inside your own organisation or in times of disaster. Although I'm sure someone will end up pinging NASA et al to see if they can get a more accommodating license from them. ___ Talk-au mailing list Talk-au@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-au
Re: [talk-au] NASA completes another elevation map
Google turned up this. Out of curiousity I'm downloading some tiles from the Japanese link of my area. http://asterweb.jpl.nasa.gov/gdem.asp ASTER Global Digital Elevation Model (GDEM) The GDEM is available for download from NASA’s EOS data archive and Japan’s Ground Data System. ASTER Global DEM and archived data are only available through the links above. This ASTER product is available at no charge for any user pursuant to an agreement between METI and NASA. They have people travelling all over the countryside all the time, often on several day trips. I may be able to get you a contact point there, but it will take a few days to set up, if I can do it. There should be other businesses that have sales reps doing a lot of country work as well. I'll start sniffing about, but would appreciate any leads also. I wasn't sure how long I'd be in the area but it will be at least a month more yet, unless something else comes up in the mean time, the climate is nicer here over winter than the other side the range in northern NSW :) I suggest that you emphasize that you will use the data anonymously. I had considered this already and I'm happy to accommodate them, if the don't want the traces uploaded I can just load the info into JOSM to make maps from them. ___ Talk-au mailing list Talk-au@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-au
Re: [talk-au] NASA completes another elevation map
If your using gpsdrive or gosmore then you can integrate it for your own use anyway. Details are in the osm wiki. Cheers Ross Hmm, that's a bit annoying. The more restrictive license is probably due to the data being collected by Japanese equipment rather than purely NASA gear. Aw well, give it time. ___ Talk-au mailing list Talk-au@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-au
