A relation can also be linked 1:1 with an item for the waterway in
Wikidata, and with the wider web of linked data.

Wikipedia a a bot which updates dead links to point to the Internet
Archive's Wayback Machine

If there is interest I could ask its operator to run it on the OSM wiki also.

It also says:

The scheme is (as anything in OSM) subject to change after everyone
has gathered experience with tagging house-numbers and interpreting
   the mapped data.

and:

These tags work well in many countries. But other countries use very
different ways of addressing that don't match these tags.

If something is implied then it is not specific.

What the wiki actually says is:

   addr:housename
   The name of a house.
This is sometimes used in some countries like England instead of
(or in addition to) a house number.

which does *not* imply that if there is a addr:housenumber there
should be no addr:housename, but on the contrary indicates that the
two properties can be used at the same time.

There's nothing explicitly about OSM on that page and the licence is
stated (despite a claim of "open data") as "Creative Commons
Attribution Non-Commercial 4.0 license (CC BY-NC 4.0). This licensing
allows for non-commercial use of the information..."

I beg to differ; this is both valuable data and ties each individual
item to the record in the dataset from which it is imported. It should
not be discarded.

[talk-au] Wikipedia/ Wikidata event in Perth on Sunday; all welsome

2018-09-26 Thread Andy Mabbett
Wikimedia AIutsralia are olding a meetup on Sunday:

   https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/Perth/52

Location: Studio 001 - Floor 1 - State Library of Western Australia -
Alexander Library Building, 25 Francis Street, Perth

   Time: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

at which I will be speaking about Wikidata; including links between
that project and OSM.

the event will be focusing on contributing material to Wikipedia,
Wikidata, and Wikimedia Commons. Bring a laptop and learn how to
upload and categorise photos, collaborate on transcribing historical
documents, or get hands-on practice scanning archival material.

We'll break for lunch at the library café from 12–1.

I hope some of you can make it.

While I strongly support the recording of indigenous names, with a
language code, surely more specific codes should be used where
possible? For instance, 'nys' for Noongar (in WA)?

Hi Juba,

That sounds great. Have you considered adding Wikidata IDs as part of your work?

For example, many of the water bodies you're working on will exist in
Wikidata; and you can create items there for those that do not.

Documentation starts here:

   https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Wikidata

and I'm happy to advise if needed.

"Pipeline" is less specific - pipelines can carry, for example, oil or
aviation fuel.

[talk-au] Wikidata IDs in OSM

2016-07-18 Thread Andy Mabbett
Hi folks,

Up here in the UK, and elsewhere, we're adding Wikidata IDs to objects in OSM.

For example:

   http://www.openstreetmap.org/way/22814079

includes the ID "Q5642705", which refers to:

   https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5642705

Firstly, I'd like to encourage you to add IDs manually, as described at:

   http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:wikidata

Secondly, we have had success in using a bot to add IDs automatically,
but the bot approval list requires local agreement. How would you feel
about us, or one of you (I think the code can be shared), doing so for
all of Australia, or on a state-by-state (or other division) basis?

[talk-au] Series of Wikidata talks & meetups, in February

2016-01-21 Thread Andy Mabbett
Time I delurked, and said hello...

I'm a mapper in the English West Midlands (Birmingham, to be precise)
and you may know me from SotM 2014, or SotMUS 2015.

I'll be visiting Australia for three weeks in February, to give talks
about Wikidata, and Wikipedia's GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives
and Museums) collaborations. There will also be social meetups for
Wikimedians, and I'd like to extend an invitation to OSMappers, to
come along and learn or ask questions about Wikidata, and how it links
with OSM, as well as meeting me and your local Wikimedia community,
and informing me about OSM in Australia.

The draft itinerary, with more events to be added, is at:

 https://wikimedia.org.au/wiki/Wikidata_Tour_Down_Under

and I hope to meet some of you soon.
