[talk-au] ACT Bridge problem.
The ACT Government confirned that the bridge numbering system would stay as is and that the other plaque I saw was probably from another utility and just on that particular bridge, so the Great Canberra BATH (Bridge and Tunnel Hunt) is on again. They also confirmed that some 200 odd culverts etc no longer met their definition of a bridge, which leaves about 860 bridges in the ACT. This means that OSM has nearly all of them mapped and all that remains is to collect and tag all the numbers and notify the Government of those numbers that have been vandalised and those bridges that have never had a number attached. So if any of you are in Canberra and notice an unmarked bridge, could you report is position here and I'll pass it along. ___ Talk-au mailing list Talk-au@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-au

"When you said ACT bridge problem I thought that you meant the one that fell down under construction." Interestingly, Jack Kirby had that closure mapped into OSM within hours. Last year a building under construction fell down, right outside the window where I work. I thought it was just the workers emptying a dumpster until someone else pointed out the pile of rubble outside. And of course, there was the aircraft hangar a while back that fell down during construction. I'm not going anywhere near the new bridge under construction on Belconnen way, not even if they put a bridge number plaque on it :) ___ Talk-au mailing list Talk-au@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-au

[talk-au] ACT Bridge problem.
Recently I've been photographing Canberra Bridge numbers and registering them in OSM in the hope that one day ACT emergency services will find them to be of use. I've currently done about 200 (only 600 to go). I will be taking two weeks off work (next week) and planned to spend the first week getting more bridge numbers in the ACT and the second week photographing bus stop signs in Queensland. However, I've run into a snag. On the way home last night, I saw what appeared to be a new number on bridge 2176 (north side of Pialligo Avenue near No 1 Oval, near the airport). This bridge has a hard to find number plaque and today I rechecked the sinage. The "hard to find" 2176 is still there (black number on a white rectangular background) but the new, easy to see sinage, is different. It is a vertical strip (white numbers on a black background), and the numbers ( 251* 330 *) are just like what is on a light pole close to the bridge ( 251 *320* ). I'm now uncertain whether the 4 digit bridge number (I've seen lowest of 1014 and highest of 5281) is being discontinued in favour of the "light pole" numbering system. Unless anyone here knows the answer to this riveting question, I'll try to contact the "bridge and lightpole" people in the ACT Government to get an answer. Till then I may have to suspend bridge number collecting (but I'm not about to start collecting light poles numbers, unless they happen to be on a bridge or tunnel).
