[talk-au] Australian version of JOSM

2009-09-18 Thread Liz
If we had an english-AU version of JOSM, we could have our own 'presets' file
so we wouldn't have Baby Hatch as an amenity, and we could have some other
useful things, including 4wd_only on the presets.

I'm no great coder, it is xml, and I have just realised that this is an
opportunity to have the tags we like in AU ready to use with our own
definitions, in JOSM

http://josm.openstreetmap.de/wiki/TaggingPresets

http://www.christeck.de/wp/2009/09/02/maintaining-josm-presets/

while an individual can maintain their own set of presets
http://josm.openstreetmap.de/ticket/2551

I think the real advantage would be in Australianising JOSM.

xml isn't really code, GPX files are a type of xml, the big issue
isn't putting together the xml file, it's working out what should be
in it.

yes, so do we need some statistical analysis like tagwatch to determine which
tags are in use?
a wiki page to put forward edits?
someone to sign up to maintain the list?

I'd start with existing wiki pages like the tagging guidelines for aussies.

> someone to sign up to maintain the list?

Someone may have to file a bug about it so it can be one of the
default presets shown that people can pick from without needing to
copy and paste a URL into JOSM.

I could hack together a quick DB+front end so that almost anyone could
maintain it, I just need to look up the structure I guess.

the newest josm 2157 has a nested menu for the presets

It looks sort of simple enough, here's one of the default preset xml files

http://www.dstoecker.eu/josm/oneclick.xml

It allows you to tag a bunch of things with just one click funnily enough :)

I was also thinking that we could have the pharmacy dispensing as more likely
than not_dispensing (I have only found one of those so far)
and preset the carrier for the mail to Australia Post, the operator of the
telephone to Telstra and other sensible defaults for us

WTF is a baby hatch?! Is it like a laundry chute, where babies go when
they're dirty and you're finished with them? I'd like one of them thanks.

Basically, except there is no return chute to get them back...

Does anyone know if JOSM has any localisation features, as opposed to
internationalisation abilities? Hopefully Aussie nomenclature can be put into a
localisation file, so we don't have to be confused by UK speak (though we don't
have it as bad as US and other countries - given our heritage).

BTW, I used to add the operator=* key to postboxes, but then saw the note on Map
Features to only add it if it is an alternate operator (DHL etc.), so by default
it is the normal operator in the region (I presume). So I then removed all the
operator tags I had added. I took that advice to apply to public phones as well
(we do have some alternative operators here, but it's pretty rare).

Even so, our language and culture is still unique and before I started
mapping I never knew what a ford was, other than a car company and a
character from novels by Douglas Adams.

Yes, unlike the US it's actually possible here to make long distance
calls on pay phones, I was a bit shocked that you can't in the US, at
least the pay phones I've tried in the past.

there are 3557 tags to go out of 3712 and one soul has started on the
