Re: [talk-au] OSGeo Oceania tree planting and mapping day
Yes A big thank you to South Dandenong Community Nursery (SDCN). They canceled last years seedling order due to Covid19 without penalty. Tony Thank you Luke. As a resident for many a year in Ferny Creek, I have never seen damage like it and my former street is still on generators with power and telephone lines littered all over the road. I wish everyone up there on the mountain the best in exceedingly tough conditions. OSGeo-Oceania thank the South Dandenong Community Nursery (SDCN) for the saplings and the work so far under trying COVID-19 conditions. Stay safe Luke! Re: [talk-au] OSGeo Oceania tree planting and mapping day
Hey Tony, Ewen Sure sounds great. If I take a day off during the week i’ll touch base. I signed up to the parks app :) We have a friends of group for our local bushland reserve and I have undertaken planting days at birdland. Also a gardens for wildlife volunteer for yarra ranges so It hurts not to be available for this :( Can’t miss my wifes bday though. Great to hear there is minimal damage that way. We are in Upwey and it was very scary. We had a massive grey gum come down :( Luke Bassett On Sun, 20 Jun 2021 at 8:49 pm, wrote: > Hi Luke > > I'm in Belgrave South, you can't be too far away, we must be almost > neighbours. > > In the unlikely event that we can't finish off the planting on the > day, the Friends of Lysterfield Park will finish off, probably the > following Wednesday which is a regular volunteering day. Re: [talk-au] OSGeo Oceania tree planting and mapping day
Hi Luke I'm in Belgrave South, you can't be too far away, we must be almost neighbours. In the unlikely event that we can't finish off the planting on the day, the Friends of Lysterfield Park will finish off, probably the following Wednesday which is a regular volunteering day. The Friends will remove the tree guards in about 6 months. If I get another group wanting to offset emissions with an environmentally sensitive planning I would probably do it again. Thanks for the warning about storm damage, I was on Stonemasons and Channel Tracks today and didn't see any damage. This planting is on nearby Ridge Track. I was clearing fallen trees on walking and bike tracks round Lysterfield Lake Wednesday and Thursday and there was little damage. Please consider joining the Friends of Lysterfield Park (see parkconnect.vic.gov.au) we volunteer Wednesdays and Thursdays. Re: [talk-au] OSGeo Oceania tree planting and mapping day
Thank you Tony for announcing this. This will hopefully be a wonderful day for the Wellington FOSS4G/SOTM conference carbon offsetting initiative. FOSS4G stands for "Free and Open Source for Geospatial Conference" and SOTM is "State of the Map" and both designed to improve the usage of OSM and genuine open source tools. The next local FOSS4G/SOTM conference, run by OSGEO-Oceania, is in November with most capital cities hopefully having a local site. For those of us in Victoria, Tony and the OSGEO-Oceania board would love to see you there to catch up and talk all things Geo whilst planting a dozen trees each. These trees are not higher than about a foot so planting will be a doddle. The area 10km north of the planting site has gone through significant damage to the tree canopy. This is a shot of one of 47 mature fallen trees I counted in a normal 35 minute walk yesterday and some of these at 75-85mtrs long. See https://twitter.com/SkillsyV2/status/1406517300103024643?s=20 If you need a lift from Melbourne or the Belgrave Railway Station, give a shout out to Tony or myself and let's get out there and shrug off the last lock down.
