As far as I know, this aspect of visibility is controlled by the map,
which tells the Garmin at what resolution objects should be displayed.

To do what you want, I believe you'll need to explore the delights of
making your own custom Garmin maps (unless you can find suitable hiking
maps already made).

This is a huge topic.  But once set up with some scripts, you can
automate the downloading of raw OSM data, and the creation of your own
custom Garmin maps (either topographic or routable).  You can also
integrate contours from other sources (although that's something I
haven't personally got around to).

To get down into the fine detail, you'll need to adjust values in the
mkgmap "points" file for:

natural=peak [0x6616 resolution 21]

and the mkgmap "lines" file for the likes of:

highway=path {add access = no; add foot = yes} [0x16 road_class=0
road_speed=0 resolution 20]

Hi

I  have madly been mapping the Walls of Jerusalem Area in Tasmania and now have 
enough data up to do a download to my Garmin 62s.  I used the file created by 
OSM Australia site and installed both the normal and routable maps on the 
Garmin.  They work very well but I have struck an issue.  That is with mountain 
peaks.  On the Garmin they do not show up until the zoom scale is 300 metres 
and then you only get the mountain icon.  Move the cursor to the icon and you 
get all the information.  When navigating in the bush you often target big

I have a Garmin 62s and the zoom settings are set to auto.
