[talk-ph] Provincial relations ( no not your far away relatives :-) )
Hi, Just finished creating relations for all the provinces. To answer Mannings email. Well done you found one of my deliberate mistakes :-) Actually I have no real idea which islands belong to which provinces. Feel free to move them from one relation to another. Sulu, and Palawan Provinces probably have some errors, as there are just so many islands. Some islands are also missing from the relations, those that I missed, which shouldn't be many, and those that are just a single node. feel free to add them. Also converted the admin areas in Mindano to relations. This is Seav's area I think. So worth checking they're correct. Also fixed a lot of broken boundaries in Manila, still some to go yet though. Added the municipalities for Cavite just so I could add the barangay that I live in, so that searching for my street would work. After 4 1/2 years I discover I live in Mambog, not Molino. Still at least the mail still arrives :-) Does anyone know of a source of municipalities that we could use ? Any reasonable maps would do. Re: [talk-ph] Provincial relations ( no not your far away relatives :-) )
Most of the maps in Wikipedia were modeled after the boundaries available in mapcentral.ph if the provincial websites didn't have them available. While creating these mapcentral derived maps in Wikipedia seems OK under the US copyright law (since only the uncopyrightable 'facts' were copied), they are unfortunately not OK under OSM's strict interpretation. That's why I don't think we should base everything off Wikipedia maps or mapcentral. I know for a fact that the boundaries in mapcentral are not 100% accurate. Unfortunately, that means that we should actually engage with the local government units in order to get the actual boundaries. This was done for San Carlos City, Negros Occidental, for example. That's why I gave up. I don't have the info to get the municipal boundaries correct. If you like you can try using the maps in wikipedia. :-) You could just delete the incorrect boundaries if you like. Sorry that I come quite late with this, it might be too late, and it was bothering me occasionally already for some months: if we really decided in the future to change the license, isn't 3 weeks a little short for such an important issue? I am referring to the time span required for an active contributor to reply to an email from the foundation. I feel this could be extended to say 6-8 weeks, because it is not completely improbable that someone is not reachable for 3 weeks, and I don't see a need for such a hurry in a case important like a license change (note we are now occupied with the current license change and discussions for over 3 years). Of course a potential new license change would most likely not appear from nowhere, and implying a benevolent foundation this is maybe not an issue, still for formal reasons I think this time span could be extended. cheers, Martin ___ legal-talk mailing list legal-talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/legal-talk

Awesome examples in this thread. Three I haven't seen above. Fantastic stuff from Tom Carden, way back in 2007. Includes places near Edinburgh where it's faster to take transit than drive to arrive at 9am And Places near London where a bicycle is faster than public transit. Brilliant. http://www.mysociety.org/2007/more-travel-maps/ The Municipality of Lund (Sweden) uses OpenStreetMap to show a selection of routes by foot, bicycle, private car and public transit, then includes travel time (naturally) plus calories burned, and carbon-offset per route. Re: [OSM-talk] Examples of OSM used in Transport Planning?
Hello Mikel, Most of your examples concerns the day to day planning done by individuals. But my guess is that the conference concerns long term planning by authorities, esp. infrastructure. There is an open source software package called MATSIM that predicts congestion and traveling times. AFAIK, it can combine digital maps (OSM), public transport data, population data and landuse data. Then it can simulate millions? of commuters each of them optimizing their traveling patterns. Although European universities are driving the RD, it is also being used in South Africa. I met a couple of times with Professor Johan Joubert who is driving the research here. Although OSM is not yet at the same quality as commercial maps, it fits his requirements better (easy integration, flexibility etc). In fact, he and his students have done a significant amount of tracing of the low income and informal settlements. They are also busy adding lanes tags to make the simulations more realistic. So they are using the Bing aerial extensively. Here in the Gauteng province, a a number of large transport projects are nearing completion (the Gautrain rapid rail link, the motorway improvement project and subsequent tolling and the Bus Rapid Transport service (BRT)). His work is being used to predict the effect they will have on economic growth. Graag jullie commentaar. Hej, 2011/3/17 Jens Winbladh j...@somewhere.dk: Så har lidt lobbyarbejde båret frugt her i Kolding. [..] Daniel, I was musing on a similar topic just recently, which I've cc'd to: http://www.commonmap.org/blog/commonmaps-common-datum/2011-03-27 I assume you mean NAD83(CSRS) coordinates, by the way? My understanding is the de facto datum of OSM is WGS84/ITRF with epoch varying with the age of each entered coordinate, and planimetric accuracy at best 10 metres (at 10m, WGS84=ITRF). Given NAD83 and WGS84 are also within the 10m error, you could just argue that you can just upload the coordinates to OSM as is. Leave a note in the changeset (maybe per boundary way?) noting where the rigorous values can transformation methods can be found. However if you want to adjust the coordinates, you could try the NAD83-ITRF (WGS84) 7(+3 dynamic) parameter similarity (Helmert) conversion for areas without a better option. This paper is the best I've found on the matter; see Section 4 of: http://www.geod.nrcan.gc.ca/publications/papers/pdf/nad83csrs.pdf Remember that the coordinates start drifting with 2-3cm/annum velocity as soon as you enter then into OSM! Hi all let me review what we received so far Richard wrote: If I remember correctly, the current Can-US border came from IBC data. How does the current border line match the monument data that you are considering? Should they be identical and are they? I have been told that IBC recomputed their coordinates 1-2 years ago (new compensation). I don't know if the border was obtained after they published the new coordinates. I've compared current border line with monument coordinates from IBC in southern Quebec. Even if for few coordinates the difference was up to 10 meter, the differences I found were usually within a meter. That is why I was considering keeping the CSRS coordinate as is. I'm glad to learn the bug is repeatable by others - that means I'm not going completely crazy. Plus, it's nice to have a good understanding now why some of the ways I'd uploaded had mysteriously disappeared. I'm glad you were able to distill down the problem so succinctly. validatorfail.osm shows off the bug well, and is much easier to follow what's going on. I'd apparently been lulled into trusting JOSM's ability to fix simple things like duplicate nodes a little too much. It's definitely a time-saver when it works, but not if roads are lost in the process. I'm hoping that a slightly revised procedure of fixing things just one category at a time (rather than at the top-level Warnings category) should be a good workaround. In the meantime, I agree that a bug report should definitely be filed about this. At the very least, disabling top-level fixes would force people to go through category by category. I'm sure I'm not the only one who has trusted (or will trust) that the top-level fix is a good way to reduce the manual workload. Your validatorfail.osm file is a perfect example of how to reproduce the problem, and should probably be included with the bug report - I can definitely try to figure out how to submit the bug report to http://josm.openstreetmap.de/ if you're busy or no one else has yet, and you don't mind my including the file. But as the person who really narrowed down the issue, the honor for reporting it (if there is such a thing) should be yours.. :-) In any case, those blanket fixes will be a thing of the past for me - I'm hoping that the category-by-category approach doesn't cause any issues. Other than this hiccup, I've found JOSM to be quite intuitive and reliable, though as was mentioned, it is a work in progress and likely always will be. It's just a matter of finding where its specific weaknesses are, and then avoiding those.

___ Talk-ja mailing list Talk-ja@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-ja ___ Talk-ja mailing list Talk-ja@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-ja ___ Talk-ja mailing list Talk-ja@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-ja

[Talk-GB] Fwd: Re: Re: Fwd: Re: Other Routes with Public Access
Original Message Subject:Re: Re: [Talk-GB] Fwd: Re: Other Routes with Public Access Date: Sun, 27 Mar 2011 11:30:56 +0100 From: Mike Harris m...@delco.idps.co.uk To: Dave F. dave...@madasafish.com CC: talk-GB@openstreetmap.org Dave Some of the documentation to which I have access as a member of the public uses the acronym ORPA, some spells it out. The following quotes are from Rights of Way: A Guide to Law and Practice, 4th Edition; John Riddall and John Trevelyan (2007). A. ... the Hobhouse Committee recommended (paragraph 45 of its [1947] report) that the information contained in those [definitive] maps should also be shown on OS maps. ... that recommendation was accepted in 1958 by OS ... IMHO this indicates that the data on definitive maps is not the property of the OS. Rather that a government Committee recommended that they make use of it and they agreed. Thus it is - in this respect - the OS map that is a derivative work rather than the definitive map. Any copyright issues therefore relate to the Highway Authority's definitive map and not to the derived OS map. B. ...They [the OS Explorer© maps] also show 'other routes with public access' (ORPAs). These are routes which are not shown on the definitive map and not shown coloured on the OS map, (thereby leading to uncertainty about their status) but which are recorded in the highway authority's list of streets ... C. ...Section 36(6) of the Highways Act 1980 requires every highway authority to make, and keep up to date, a list of streets within its area which are highways maintainable at public expense. The list must be available for inspection [by the general public] free of charge at the council's offices ... some authorities regard themselves as complying with section 36(6) by maintaining the relevant information in the form of a map ... there will be many streets shown in the list which do not appear on the definitive map ... the inclusion of a way on the list of streets is evidence of no more than that it is a highway, inclusion of a way on the list gives no guidance as to the nature of the rights that exist over it (other than that inclusion on the list foes prove that at least a right of way on foot exists) ... IMHO B and C together indicate that information contained in the list of streets has nothing whatsoever to do with the OS and lies in the public domain. I would deduce (possibly incorrectly, but not assume or guess) that if the OS choose to depict upon their maps something that lies in the public domain they cannot then claim copyright over it. The question is then whether the phrase or acronym by which they choose to describe it is subject to copyright or whether others may use the phrase or acronym without a licence to do so. In other words, I deduce that there is no problem for OSM over depiction of the way (always assuming - by which in this instance I mean on condition that - the way has either been surveyed on the ground (as all mine are) or are derived from a legitimate licence-free source. Nor is there any difficulty over adding a key or value that states that the way - if an ORPA - has public rights on foot. When (if?) OSM says something is an ORPA, this is surely shorthand for saying that it does not appear on the definitive map but does appear on the list of streets. The question is only what may we call it, i.e. whether we are free to use this shorthand. The use of the acronym ORPA or the phrase other routes with public access is a term invented by the OS. Does this mean that as a result we cannot use the term? I would be interested to hear views from others on this specific point. At present - but subject to change - my own view is that: - the OS never wished to (nor could) restrict the use of the phrase or acronym - indeed it is difficult to discuss ORPAs unless we do use the phrase or acronym! - they cannot (and I doubt they would wish to) restrict the use of the information that the way has rights of access on foot - they themselves got this information from someone else (the highway authority) who has a statutory obligation to make that information public. - they might wish to restrict the copying of the way itself from some of their maps (but no difference here from anything else on a restricted OS map) and we shouldn't do it. In other words: - the depiction of the way is OK subject to the usual OSM conditions (approximately: surveyed on the ground by us or derived from a licence-free source). - the information as to rights on the way is OK if not simply derived from its depiction as an ORPA on an OS map but from its presence in the list of streets and absence from the definitive map (or other non-OS sources of such information). - as to the usefulness, I would submit that it is useful to know that public rights on (at least) foot exist - i.e. as opposed to other ways where no such rights
[Talk-us] Proposed import of IBC data (was RE: [Talk-ca] NAD83-SCRS vs WGS84 Reference systems)
Adding talk-us@ and imports@ to the cc list since this touches the border. The IBC data matches decently with the NAIP and Bing imagery on the border, and very well with my 10cm Surrey imagery. The existing border data in OSM is about 20m away in parts (near monument 32 for example) The proposed tagging is man_made=survey_point ref=32 source=CA-US International Boundary Commission I don't think it's worth the effort to worry about any NAD83-CSRS vs. WGS84 differences. The data can be found here... http://www.internationalboundarycommission.org/products.html and it is available for NAD27 and NAD83-SCRS reference system. Context: For what I understand, The difference between NAD83-SCRS and WGS84 is 0-2 meters. To get a rigorous transformation from NAD83-SCRS to WGS84 we need to use shift grids describing the shift between NAD83 and NAD83-SCRS. These grids should be available through provincial agencies but I have been told that not all provinces have them available. Question1: Do I understand it properly? Question2: Considering that provided coordinates value/reference numbers can be read directly from their web site, it make sense for me to use NAD83-SCRS directly even if there is a 0-2 meter offset. Does it make sense for everyone? Bonjour Daniel! We do have others on this list with experience in re-projection. I hope they'll join in. I've asked about the shift grids on #osm-dev. If I remember correctly, the current Can-US border came from IBC data. How does the current border line match the monument data that you are considering? Should they be identical and are they? Could we pop this data into a tile overlay layer so we can look at it on existing OSM data (without the import)? Re: [Talk-us] Proposed import of IBC data (was RE: [Talk-ca] NAD83-SCRS vs WGS84 Reference systems)
For the area here, they appear to all have monuments or the imagery is of insufficient quality to determine. What's the difference between a survey point and a turning point? Is it that one has a small change in direction while the other has a large change in direction? For the 49th parallel, all of the monuments are of the form Mon xx or Mon. xx For the other regions, I see some are of the form TP xx. I don't think survey_point=turning_point is what we should use. http://taginfo.openstreetmap.de/keys/survey_point#values shows that it's mainly used to indicate the physical form of the survey point. -Original Message- From: Richard Weait [mailto:rich...@weait.com] Sent: Sunday, March 27, 2011 1:46 PM To: Daniel Begin Cc: impo...@openstreetmap.org; talk-us@openstreetmap.org; Paul Norman; talk...@openstreetmap.org Subject: Re: [Talk-us] Proposed import of IBC data (was RE: [Talk-ca] NAD83-SCRS vs WGS84 Reference systems) On Sun, Mar 27, 2011 at 4:40 PM, Daniel Begin jfd...@hotmail.com wrote: Thank Paul, a really good idea to include others as they are concerned :-) About tagging, I would agree with minor adjustments ... man_made=survey_point - agreed ref= - agreed to reference a monument id However, I would add a prefix for turning points, helping differentiate them from monuments.
