Re: [OSM-talk-be] Adressen

2015-11-03 Thread Sander Deryckere
As one IP can only execute one query at a time, and it takes a while before
Overpass decides to start a query (they are queued), it's not possible to
have one query per street (it would take very long to load the page).
That's why all streets of a village are combined into one request.

If someone is willing to experiment, it might be fixable by enlarging the
timeout too (see
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Overpass_API/Overpass_QL#timeout ),
though it will probably ask a bit of trial-and-error to get a decent
timeout.

Regards,
Sander

I forgot to add the reason:

http://overpass-api.de/command_line.html

"504 Gateway Timeout is sent if the server has already so much load that
the request cannot be executed. In most cases, it is best to try again
later. Please note that the server decides this based on the timeout and
maxsize parameters of the request, so smaller values for them may also
make the request acceptable."

If you try it with 1 street (small request) instead of all the streets
of a post code, it actually works for me now. But any street wildcard
request are to big it seems as they are executed in a single request.

MIVB nog steeds niet, spijtig genoeg. Voor Wallonië hebben we toch al de

2015-11-03 Thread joost schouppe
Hey Nicolas,

I totally agree that building awereness is always good.
But I'm not sure that "more people know and use OSM in Flanders". I would
like to make some statistics of (active) contributors in the various parts
of the country to see if that's true when it comes to contribution. Which
is only part of the equation of course.

An alternative explanation for different browsing numbers might be that the
search terms people use to find the website work better in Dutch language
Belgian Google than in the French language one. For example, just looking
up "openstreetmap" in Dutch, gives as the first result the Holland website,
but osm.be is already number five. It would be interesting to see where it
shows up in your version.
I have the impression that people mostly use very simple queries like this
to find us; however almost 90% of search terms are unavailable in
Analytics. (If I understand correctly, because of people switching to
https).

I think the takeway for everyone is that we are small and not as easy to
find as we should be. And the best solution for that is building backlinks.
So if you know of people who write about Openstreetmap in Belgium, kindly
ask them to refer to us if that's apropriate.
