Couple of things to keep in mind here -

 1. We'd need open licensing, or it should say that tracing for

There's two sides to this - one is getting the imagery, the other is
having it hosted somewhere.

If you can get the imagery under a usable license, I'm sure someone can

host it. Once it's hosted, it can be added to the list for iD and P2

Do we really need the tiles? If they give an API service, wouldn't it be
enough?

We should be clear of exactly what to ask.

We did a trial mapping of trees on an instance of opentreemap at
http://trees.metastudio.org/mumbai yesterday. We mapped about 50 trees, and
will be doing many more during this month.

the Procedure that we followed, one hour of field on the street with
fieldpapers
to mark the positions of the trees, and then we returned to the lab and mapped
the trees with name and address.

Will update the documentation on the site and will be keeping the site ready
for the use of several volunteers who will join from 13th onwards.

On Sunday 14 Dec 2014 6:57:35 PM Arun Ganesh wrote:
Hi GN, this is awesome, can you share more details on the project and how
 others can participate?

yes. give me a week, the website is getting ready. We will be starting this
project with a question to investigate. The question is to know the serial
killer of rain treen in Mumbai. About 400 trees died in the last 3-4 years.
So, initially we will be mapping all the rain trees in the city and its
suburbs. We will have about a hundred volunteers and we expect to finish rain
tree mapping by the end of January. And the investigation will continue.

   1. when we add a tree, we also add its name etc. however, this

  information

does not appear. The tree dot is visible but does not have any info.

  One has

to go to edit interface to check the information added. How to go about

  this?

We'll need to make a custom rendering style for this. Nobody seems to have
 looked into this yet.

This is not a show stopper now, but eventually it will be good to have the
information. I will not focus on this issue at all. This is just to say,
what do we need in OSM.

   2. under the type of trees, we would like to add some more types. is

  this

possible? how to go about doing this?

Looks like this list can be expanded in the iD editor code:
 https://github.com/openstreetmap/iD/blob/master/data/presets/fields/tree_typ
 e.json

You can see the list of commonly used tree tags at
 http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:natural%3Dtree which could be
 helpful for the mappers.

I looked at this. We need to record some additional type of information.
e.g. if there is any pest found on the tree. name of the pest: This is
important for us since the rain trees are dying because of a pest called meal
worm. The other thing is to note if the tree is situated at a cemented land
or open land.

If one of you can help getting this extra information, or tell us how to
pursue this with OSM, that will be good. Or else, if you guys can setup a
separate server for this, that is always the best.

btw, what happened to the idea of setting up of a osm.in?

 1. The following table helps in adding Lat/Long to the pincodes where ever

Populate your data to this for others to use.

 2. Then use the resultant table as input in Qgis (or gvSIG, OpenJump) make a
shape file. 3. Use JOSM add the shape file, and then upload to OSM.
 Cheers

Thanks so much Prateek, Naveen and Ravi. I will first make a csv file with
schoolname, district, pincode. We will keep updating this with lat.long,
possibly from the above link given by Ravi.

After this I will attend to the challenge of shape files for each pincode area.
Initially we will keep the schools randomly around the lat/long,and then get
it corrected through some citizen science engagement.

We need a separate map server since NCERT and TISS are currently doing

these are Govt of India supported projects we need to take care of the

Arun is interested to do multi-lingual custom maps for school education.

NCERT is also interested in this project.

The server will be made available to installations on this Monday and

  hosted at osm.metaStudio.org.

Can we also perhaps point openstreetmap.in to the same server?

 +1

that is the idea. the machine will be mapped to two domains. I will send the
public IP soon where ngnix virtual hosting config will be, so that the dns can
be directed to this.
