Hello Christophe,

First of all thanks for the idea. I was in a hurry preparing my
"conclusions and outlook for osgeo.be" presentation. One of the things I
wanted to add was how we can use FOSS4G to create value - somewhat
triggered by the "where is the money" discussion just before.

Anyway, I'm adding the openstreetmap be mailing list as they have much more
experience in organising mapping parties.

To the OSM folks: the idea is to organise a "mapping party" targeted
towards homeless and socially disabled people. Full thread below (I added
an inline comment).

Kind Regards,
Johan

That is surely the case - they may also help finding out what is really
important, how maps are probably going to be used (print, smartphone,
language , ...?), ... that is much more important than eg what software we
are going to use.

I'd actually suggest sitting together and brainstorming with at least some
of them first, so we can prepare the mapping party, this can be on short
notice.

Hi Johan,

The first question for the project should be: do we want to own this data?
If the answer is no, then you should really consider using Openstreetmap as
the place where the data lives. For example, you could build something like
http://wheelmap.org/en/ which has no data of its own. It's just tools that
enrich the community built and maintained data, and visualizes the data
relevant to their audience. That prevents creating yet another data silo.
There are similar projects like
https://openbeermap.github.io/#16/48.8713/2.3834 for people with other
special needs.

Of course, if you have a data silo, you can model and protect the data as
you wish. If you use OSM on the other hand, you become part of a community
of over half a million mappers and an ecosystem of developers who might
reuse the data you help collecting in totally unexpected ways. But then you
will have to develop or reuse a tagging scheme to fit the data you need in
the OSM data model. This is not as hard as it sounds, but do involve as
much experienced OSM mappers as soon as possible.

This is only possible if the data you want to map is verifiable. If you
want to map "decent places for homeless people to spend the night" (e.g.
under a bridge), that would be a hard sell. [There's a very similar
discussion about wild camp sites]. But if you want to map things like
"overnighting facility for homeless people", that would be very easy to
achieve.
See http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Map_Features for an introduction.
