[Talk-ca] Fwd: Wiki page on meetup

2010-07-17 Thread Sam Vekemans
Hi all.
For anyone who will be in Vancouver on july 27th and july 28th, please
add your names to the wiki page for the RSVP so then we can pick a
location which would be best.

For the who are remote, attendence is VERY welcome via skype call and
video, as your insights are valuable, the more people we have
attending, the more lively the debate :-)
and also, depending on who attends it will shape the discussions. (we
will also have the #osm-ca irc chat open also)
i'll be in town for the day on the 28th so im happy to meetup we just
need to arrange a time.
if your unable to attend, but wanted to, please list your name, so
then we can plan for the next meetup in the fall, as part of a
trans-canada mapping marathon.

cheers,
Sam Vekemans

Sam was replying to an off-list message, so here's the wiki link:
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Vancouver/July2010

Once we have a location figured out, I'm going to add the event to the
calendar of events on the OSM wiki main page. Anybody know a good place to
go? Got any connections?

P.S. Feel free to jump on the #osm-ca IRC chat on oftc.net
irc://irc.oftc.net/#osm-ca
we now have 11 people online :) ... mostly from Canada
I use Pidgin Messenger, i find it's the easist.
This way, others who are working on the data will know who is working where :)
... and we're all in the same boat, figuring out the best methods.

One word of caution on Canvec: at least for streams and lakes, I found that
NHN has better data around the area where I live. Before copying these from
Canvec, I'd advise checking NHN for the area.

Do you have an idiot guide on how to do this? I've picked up Pidgin
so I assume its just a matter of getting an account somewhere? The
Canvec OSM data looks extremely good.

If we want a location really close to the OSGeo meeting, we could go to Waves
at 1198 W Pender Street. Free WiFi, probably a lot of power outlets.

1198 W Pender is around the intersection of Bute and Pender. The OSGeo
meeting is at 1177 W Hastings (1 street over and 11 address parcels down).
They're about 200 meters apart.

Have you been there before Alan? Are they accepting of large crowds
gathering for 2 hours? My list of people to email is around 50 and I'm
hoping for 5 or 6 to show up. I'm sure some of us would buy drinks, of
course...

The server you want is
irc.oftc.net
Once you are on the server, you can type
/join #osm-ca
to join the channel.
There's not really an account managing system that you have to sign up with.
OFTC does have nickserv support, but it's optional (I think).

I haven't been to that one, but all the other Waves locations have no problem
with large groups camping out for extended periods. I don't spend much time in
that area, so maybe there are better options?
